The combined energy of these teams directs WJ en- thusiasm to team support. A distinctive season for the cheerleaders, 1959- 60 saw new cheers among those in the traditional repertoire. This team was credited with a major part in Varsity and JV victories, say the Spartans who were urged on by enthusiastic encouragement and appreciation. Because the students-especially the boys-en- joyed their synchronized steps, the Pom pons were in demand at assemblies as Well as at games. This year was memorable for them, too, as an occasion for wearing new, form-fitted white cotton instead of the shapeless skirts and sweaters. The bright white of the Majorettes' uniforms sparkled in half time shows and in the annual Bethesda Christmas parade.

Geared to a well rounded understand- ing of calisthenics and sports, boys in physical ed- ucation classes learn those skills that will be useful in individual or group sports now and later. During the year, the physical education curricu- lum includes health and hygiene, sports, and the rules that go with them. Combinations of lectures, demonstration, and practice are the methods the teachers use. Thus they turn potential into kinetic energy, raising steam each day as the boys go to Work. Sports such as basketball, football, and baseball, chosen for their popularity and adaptability to team play, and individual sports such as tumbling, Wrest- ling, and tennis are among the vehicles used to teach not only rules and techniques, but also fairness and good sportsmanship. In order to take Driver Education, a matter of six weeks of training and study, one must be enroll- ed in physical education. Beyond one year required in high school, physical education is elective.
