This organi- zation honors aspiring journalists who have proved that they deserve special merit through high scholarship, jour- nalistic achievement, and service. Under the supervision ot Mrs. Eve- lyn D. Wittman, sponsor, and Miss Margaret Kauttman, sponsor of the Spectator, the Walter Johnson chapter ot the Society selects members ot the junior and senior classes who have done outstanding work in writing, edit- ing, business management, or produc- tion on school publications. ln order to be considered tor membership, can- didates must be in the upper third of their class in general scholastic stand- ing, either tor the year of their elec- tion or for the cumulative total of all of their high school work. They must then be recommended by the publica- tions sponsor with whom they work. There are no annual dues collected, however, upon application for mem- bership, the candidate is required to pay a basic membership fee which provides him with a one-year subscrip- tion to Quill and Scroll magazine and an official gold pin designating the type of work he has been doing. To the membership rolls of Quill and Scroll, seventeen students were elected, two additional hold-over mem- bers selected as juniors in 1958 have made up the current total of nineteen. Membership is highly prized by those students with journalistic ambitions. National Honor Society A waiting silence settled over the all-school assembly as the list of in- ductees was read by John Evans, pres- ident of the Walter Johnson chapter of the National Honor Society. As each name was called, an usher moved to escort the surprised student to the stage while proud parents beamed in the background. In a solemn candle- lighting ceremony, the president ad- ministered the pledge to the inductees, and they officially became members of the National Honor Society. The students in the society repre- sent the cream of the crop in every phase of school life. Chosen by the faculty, each student must excel in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Scholastically, a B average or better is required. Sen- iors meeting these conditions are eligi- ble for induction in either October or March, while juniors may become members only in the spring month. The Honor Society, sponsored by Miss Margaret Kauffman, meets in the morning whenever there is busi- ness to discuss. At the beginning of the year, they decided to take upon themselves the responsibility of super- vising the early-morning study halls. Another of their duties was to help set up the bulletin board outside the counselors' offices. The society elected as its l958- l959 officers John Evans, president, Davis Dassori, vice-president, Penny Zweigenhaft, secretary, and David Cargo, treasurer. The Key Club Jackets mismatching with trousers and dresses screaming out of harmony with acces- sories were the order of the day at the Key Klash, a school dance given by the members of the Key Club. Affiliated with the Bethesda chapter of Kiwanis, the Key Club is an international, honorary service organization for boys. Each year new members are selected on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, character and par- ticipation in extra-curricular activities, Serv- ing the school and community in any way possible is the purpose of the club. Its motto is appropriately, We Build. Key Club has helped build WJ through their service projects. Raising the flag-in coop- eration with the Wheel Club, ushering at school functions, and printing and distributing the school song on cards are evidence of this. Placing a sign in front of the school for pur- poses of identification, built by the members of the club themselves, is another project ac- complished. Three delegates-Ford Eastman, Jay Mich- ael, and Bob Van Nice-went to the i958 District Convention of the Key Clubs in Rich- mond, Virginia, to represent the club. The officers of this organization, which is sponsored by Arnold J. Croddy, are president, Jim Ritchie, vice-president, Jerry Martin, sec- retary, Jay Michael, and treasurer, Mike Gaffney.
