' 6 it ffjf If 1 I Senior Part I Home is where the heart is is certainly true of us now, but l never would have thought so during my sophomore year. As difficult as it is to believe, my heart belonged elsewhere for the first two months of high school. n I still remember our brave class of I959 wandering through the bewildering laby- rinth of B-CC. Undaunted by curious glances directed at us by dignified uppercloss- men, we walked tall and tried not to look perplexed. After two happy but confusing rlnoxnths, our class was moved-lock, stock, and barrel-into our brand new Walter o nson. Allot of work lay in front of us, especially the job of organizing the SCA. This took time, but after the appointment of temporary officers, things began to run smoothly. We also elected Sophomore Class officers, Jud Pearson became president, Bill Grey, vice-president, Betty Lou Hale, secretary, and Pete Labovitz, treasurer. The juniors also elected officers, these I won't name because they soon moved on and out. l'm not overlooking the seniors our first year here-there just weren't any! This lack of mature leadership did not handicap us as I thought it might. A truly close relationship grew between the sophomores and juniors which was one of our most wonderful experiences. As the year progressed, I began to develop a special pride in WJ. We had an un- defeated football team, a fast basketball team, and a record-breaking track team. The first of many snowless Sno-Balls was a great success as was another first, Fantasia. At the end of the year came the Junior Prom to which the sophomores were invited. In June, amid a flurry of yearbook signing, we departed after braving our first year in high school. Part ll Workl That was going to be my junior year motto. Suddenly the future loomed in front of me, and I decided to prepare to make the most of it. The first step as a member of the junior class was to vote for officers. Those elected were Pete Labovitz, president, Bill Grey, vice-president, Betty Lou Hale, sec- retary, and Don Fresh, treasurer. This energetic group planned the many activities that were so important for a junior class. Now that Walter Johnson was a full-fledged high school, the juniors were the ones who had to hold the school together, like the peanut butter in a sand- wich. SENIORS NEAL A. Class History I found that it was becoming more and more difficult to study. With an unde- feated football team, Saturday was not a day for the books, and besides, everyone was getting his driver's license. Now the fun really began! At the Christmas dance I had a heavenly time and felt like quite the adult, Soon after The Night of January I6, the snow came, but the buses did not. I had a week to relax from the bustle of study and basketball. Fantasia was a tremendous success, but grades took a nose-dive during rehearsals. Well, I thought, I can really work this spring. We all did, and it really showed. Honors came thick and fast to several members of our class in science, poetry, and journalism. Before we knew it, it was time for the Junior-Senior Prom. This year had gone by so quickly that it hardly seemed natural that the seniors were leaving. Even more strange was the fact that we were almost seniors! Me-a senior! Part III Can it be that I am really being graduated this year? It doesn't seem possible already, but here I am, a senior-mature, sophisticated, glorious, and extremely confused. What will I be doing a couple of years 'from now? This was my last year of the loving care and protection of public school, and what a year it wasl The dominant question throughout the year was, Will I or won't I get into col- lege? The suspense was unbearable. Finally, in May, I breathed a tremendous sigh of relief. I had been accepted, now I could relax a little from the frenzied studying I'd been doing all year. Of course I hadn't let my studying interfere with too many activities-there was the Windup, Football, basketball, track, The Curious Savage, Fantasia . . . The list was really Iongl Our officers this final year were Pete Labovitz, president, Charlie Mathews, vice- president, Don Fresh, treasurer, and Marilyn Twiss, secretary. They were the ones who, with the Senior Class Council, planned all those wonderful end-of-year activities which added so much to our senior year. The grand climax of high school will come soon now when I step up on the stage to receive my diploma-symbol of the end of one stage of my life. No more carefully side-stepping the Spartan plaque, no more staring at blue, green, and orange walls, no more listening to gentle moos floating sweetly into afternoon classes. Why I'm getting nostalgic before I've Ieftl I know I'Il miss all of this, but I'm already looking ahead and planning for what next year will bring. So it goes. We are continually preparing for the future. As seniors, we find the world our oyster-we've finished the first step in prying open the shell.
