The Golf Team ln golf, as in other sports, Walter Johnson's team distinguished itself as a group of fine sportsmen. Frank Black, Jackie Holzburg and Pete John formed the nucleus of the team with strong support from Tom Lamond, Dave Burd, Erik Nystrom, Pete Boone and Sean Baldwin. Coaching the team this year was James Gilmore, who arranged a schedule of approxi- mately eleven matches. HQ Track Team With only three returning lettermen, the Spartans' track team entered the stiff bi- county competition in a memorable meet with B-CC and Wakefield. ln order to prepare for this meet, the Spar- tans held a practice meet with Sherwood. As this meet did not count on either team's sea- sonal record, its main purpose was to iron out the rough spots in the teams. Walter John- son had never participated in a practice meet before, but because of its success, it will probably be tried again next year. This year's team was coached by James Kline, who had been an outstanding halfback at George Washington University, and cap- tained by Eugene Merryman. With the completion of our new 520,000 track, we were able to hold home meets for the first time in Walter Johnson's history. With its 220 straightaway and its excellent drainage system, it ranks among the best in the area. 'I959 TRACK SCHEDULE March 25 Howard County vs. W.J. Tennis Team Walter Johnson's racquetmen took to the clay this spring with two seasons of experience under their belts and a full schedule of matches confronting them. The team, coached by Raymond I. These are familiar commands to the 24 juniors and seniors who make up the Pom pons. The girls tried out in April of last year and were selected on the basis of their marching ability, personality, and grades. Beginning in the heat of July they practiced twice a week before school started in the fall and every day after school began for the opening football game in September. Anne Emery and Sylvia Knott, co-captains, taught the girls precision marching and routines and led them at the half-time football shows. Later on in the year the Pom pons partici- pated in the all-school Christmas Assembly and did a wild can-can in the February Pops Concert.
