HQ Track Team With only three returning lettermen, the Spartans' track team entered the stiff bi- county competition in a memorable meet with B-CC and Wakefield. ln order to prepare for this meet, the Spar- tans held a practice meet with Sherwood. As this meet did not count on either team's sea- sonal record, its main purpose was to iron out the rough spots in the teams. Walter John- son had never participated in a practice meet before, but because of its success, it will probably be tried again next year. This year's team was coached by James Kline, who had been an outstanding halfback at George Washington University, and cap- tained by Eugene Merryman. With the completion of our new 520,000 track, we were able to hold home meets for the first time in Walter Johnson's history. Baseball The arrival of warm weather heralded the return of baseball to Walter Johnson. Even though the Green Machine lost ten seniors to last year's graduating class, a new crop of sophomores showed promise for the future. Letterman Jim Buell was back behind the plate far WJ, and Steve Kellner, a sparkling third baseman afield and last year's leading hitter, again held down the hot spot. While Charlie Sheldon and Bob Powers returned to their infield posts, outfield had only Sam Lo Presti back for another year. The team, coached by Allen A. Swick, has greatly improved each year since the school was built. Since this was the first year that Walter Johnson was in the Bi-County League, they found tough competition, especially in B-CC and Montgomery Blair. The Golf Team ln golf, as in other sports, Walter Johnson's team distinguished itself as a group of fine sportsmen. Frank Black, Jackie Holzburg and Pete John formed the nucleus of the team with strong support from Tom Lamond, Dave Burd, Erik Nystrom, Pete Boone and Sean Baldwin. Coaching the team this year was James Gilmore, who arranged a schedule of approxi- mately eleven matches. Led by Jim Buell, outstanding matman for the Spartans, they won three matches, lost four, and made thirteen points in the tourna- ment. Coach Thomas Alberghini worked hard with his boys, and the team's experience will stand it in good stead next year.
