Many of the games played by the JV were close, some were lost by only one or two points. The junior Spartans were successful in their main objective, that of building a solid crop of basketball players who are able to carry the burden of varsity play next year. Varsity Basketball The Walter Johnson Basketball Varsity ended its first season of play in the Mary- land Bi-County League tied for third place. The Spartans had a record of l2-4 against Bi-County rivals and an overall record of i3-7 to show for its second full season of varsity play. After dropping its first three games, the Spartans came back to present a serious threat of taking the Bi-County title. WJ lost its first of two games to Bethesda-Chevy Chase to open league play, but the Green and White rallied to defeat High Point by a single point in overtime. High Point later took revenge by beating the Spartans in overtime. The Varsity defeated Wheaton, Oxon Hill, Blair, and Richard Montgomery twice, while splitting two games with Northwestern. The Spartans also blasted the title-hopes of arch- rival Northwood by beating the Indians twice. In non-league contests the Spartans fared less well. The Varsity lost to Wakefield in the season's opener and followed by dropping a game with Landon. A .500 record in two games against Gaithersburg filled out the slate. The Spartans were led by high-scoring for- ward Bill Butler, while Coach Allen. Swick had Peter John and Bob Woodward doing their share of the scoring. Captain Bill Blomquist and Junior Tom Lamond completed the start- ing five from their guard positions. Reserves Doug Thornton and Tom McGibony proved to be valuable as they sparked the squad on numerous occasions. Baseball The arrival of warm weather heralded the return of baseball to Walter Johnson. Even though the Green Machine lost ten seniors to last year's graduating class, a new crop of sophomores showed promise for the future. Letterman Jim Buell was back behind the plate far WJ, and Steve Kellner, a sparkling third baseman afield and last year's leading hitter, again held down the hot spot. While Charlie Sheldon and Bob Powers returned to their infield posts, outfield had only Sam Lo Presti back for another year. The team, coached by Allen A. Swick, has greatly improved each year since the school was built. Since this was the first year that Walter Johnson was in the Bi-County League, they found tough competition, especially in B-CC and Montgomery Blair.
