From this team, several of the more outstanding players will become members of the Varsity team. They will have a much better chance of making the Varsity because of the experience and know-how gained this past year. The JV, ending its season with a won three, lost four, tied one record, did have its ups and downs, but there were several occasions when the team jelled into a smoothly work- ing, efficient organization which resulted in victories over their unfortunate opponents. All in all, the JV contained much potential for the coming season. Working. with the team this year was its head coach, Thomas J. Alberghini, and its back field coach, Andrew Sonner. .lunior Varsity Football Record XAVilson B 3 NNLVVJ l8 ' ' ont omer lair l J 6 Junior Varsity Football wheiof. r ' ' . pt. Varsity Football Rig, i J fi A' ' f A rash of mid-season injuries dispelled hopes for another undefeated season for the is-P WJ Football Varsity. The Spartans ended their 9 game slate with a record of 5 wins, 4 losses. 1 After edging Sherwood in the season's opener l4-6, the WJ Eleven smashed North- western 25-7. The Oxon Hill Clippers fell next by a score of 33-l3. October lO saw the Spartans drop their first Varsity Football game in its three year history. After l8 straight 1 3 lr- J - l games, the Green and White lost to a fired-up High Point squad. ln spite of the outstanding performances on the offensive by speedy Bill Grey, Frank Black, and Billy Wootton, the de- fensive ability of Charlie Matthews and Jim Buell, the Spartans lost their next two games to Wheaton and Montgomery Blair. ln No- vember, B-CC got its long awaited revenge for last year's beating by trouncing the Spar- tans 63-O on their home field. In their next and last game of the season with Northwood, the team showed their fighting spirit by coming up from a half-time score of l3-O to defeat their arch-rivals by a score of 2l-l3. ,A Coaching the team this year was J. Paul Miller, who was assisted by James F. Kline. ln the future, with four coaches working with the varsity instead of two, WJ has high hopes of snapping back to another winning season in 159-160, Varsity Football Seated: l-lerny Heller, Tom Brown, Bill Grey, Jim Buell, Bob Prince, Richard King, Charlie Mathews, Mike Kingston, Bill Loving, Jim Gibbons, Harold M cCann , Second row: Neil Donner, Phil Wertlieb, Warren Price, Pete Labovitz, Pete Skogound, Bob Kramp, Sam LoPresti, Carl Woxman, Cornell Dawson, Tom L d, K t We outh, Ken Wright, John Hochstein , , S?anrfgF:1g:C?:rfletonyFl1utchinson, Richard Farr, Paul Norris, John Murdock, Bob Taylor, Frank Black, Dick Dunlop, BBill Wooten, Jack Pollock, Jack Byrd, Jim Miller, Eugene Merryman, Dick Beale, Tim Dugan U W 1113 6 la15'l47IE'.I'.!l1IHtl.'lAII1lI I 4 Lffelv, LT ll C I.. Varsity Basketball The Walter Johnson Basketball Varsity ended its first season of play in the Mary- land Bi-County League tied for third place. The Spartans had a record of l2-4 against Bi-County rivals and an overall record of i3-7 to show for its second full season of varsity play. After dropping its first three games, the Spartans came back to present a serious threat of taking the Bi-County title. WJ lost its first of two games to Bethesda-Chevy Chase to open league play, but the Green and White rallied to defeat High Point by a single point in overtime. High Point later took revenge by beating the Spartans in overtime. The Varsity defeated Wheaton, Oxon Hill, Blair, and Richard Montgomery twice, while splitting two games with Northwestern. The Spartans also blasted the title-hopes of arch- rival Northwood by beating the Indians twice. In non-league contests the Spartans fared less well. The Varsity lost to Wakefield in the season's opener and followed by dropping a game with Landon. A .500 record in two games against Gaithersburg filled out the slate. The Spartans were led by high-scoring for- ward Bill Butler, while Coach Allen. Swick had Peter John and Bob Woodward doing their share of the scoring. Captain Bill Blomquist and Junior Tom Lamond completed the start- ing five from their guard positions. Reserves Doug Thornton and Tom McGibony proved to be valuable as they sparked the squad on numerous occasions.
