FOREWORD Like Athena who sprang perfectly formed from the forehead of Zeus, Walter Johnson strode into full responsibility from the moment students entered its halls. We had to go promptly into the business of education, and then, having passed the first signifi- cant milestone by graduating our first senior class of l958, we became eligible for evaluation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Accreditation proved to be of paramount impor- tance to us this year. Although, like Athena, we were immediately full grown, we found that examination of our school put us on our mettle, requiring all of us, from the opening day, to work toward this achievement, Now at the conclusion of the year, our efforts have been rewarded. The committee of accred- itors, in evaluating us on every possible basis-from the number of square feet per classroom to the num- ber of volumes in our library-has included us among approved schools. The Windup staff has presented a picture of Walter Johnson in the following pages much as the accredi- tors must have seen us. We have put faculty and seniors first, for in an educational institution, teach- ers and students are clearly as inseparable as the horse and carriage mentioned in the hit tune, Love and Marriage. Following the students, we have presented activities in such a way, we hope, as to give the reader some insight into curricula, class content, club, student government-in brief, into all those pursuits with which our school days are filled. What the reader cannot see, of course, are the intangibles-those aspects of growth through which raw sophomores become less raw seniors. Ready or not, we seniors who have been the first to complete WJ's entire three-year course are now moving on. We have contributed, we feel, to the accrediting of our school, similarly, our school has matured us, making us grow through those operanda one sees presented in the following pages.
