Future Nurses Club What is your choice of a career? is a question that is frequently asked of students. At Walter Johnson the Future Nurses of America Club aids in vocational selection by carefully investigating the field of nursing. Although newly organized this fall, the twenty members of the club have been most active. They have heard speakers from the Navy, Army, Washington Hospital Center, and the University of Virginia as well as seeing many movies such as Girls in White and Angels of Mercy. The club members helped their sponsor, Miss Elaine Lewis, by bringing in plants to brighten up the health room. The girls responsible for keeping the club functioning smoothly this year were president, Stephanie Muth, vice-president, Evelyn Blu- menauer, secretary, Carol Morgan, and treas- . urer, Celia Spencer. Those people walking around school wearing beanies, singing songs, and re- peating creeds were merely Future Homemak- ers going through their initiation ordeal. lf you think a college freshman has it rough, you should have seen these girls! Perhaps they got their ideas after listening to stories of Christmas in Sweden with the clowns, goblins, and what have you. lt sounds unusual, but these stories came straight from the horse's mouth, a speaker from the Swedish embassy. And on St. Patrick's Day, the speak- er, very naturally, came from Ireland. You might wonder what Christmas in Swe- den or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland has to do with homemaking. The girls in Future Home- making feel that promoting friendlier rela- tions at home, at school, in the community, and abroad is just as important as knitting, cooking and sewing. With Miss Shirley Corkran sponsoring, Di- ane Schroeder at the helm, Carole Ingalls, vice-president, Missy Surface, secretary, and Joanne Keller, treasurer, comprising the crew, the Future Homemakers Club sailed through a successful year. Where the first FHA was mainly seniors and juniors, the second chapter was all sopho- mores. Although following the senior lead, they did reserve some plans and activities for themselves, such as running a Christmas toy drive and planning a spring picnic for the members and their families. I ' ' Y Senior Tri Hi-Y The Senior Tri Hi-Y is a chapter of the national Tri Hi-Y, an affiliate of the local YMCA. The aims of this organization are to create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community high standards of Christian character. Attainment of this goal is amphasized through fellowship, cit- izenship, and public service. Supporting a needy family has been the club's primary social service project, At Christmas time they contributed canned food and clothes to their adopted family and gave them a Christmas dinnerg at Easter, they again provided a dinner. Raising money for their many worthwhile projects is a major problem. To help solve this, some of the girls made cookies and gave a bake sale in front of the Grand Union. Another money-making activity was Fash- ion Flair, a soring fashion show sponsored by a popular Bethesda clothing store. The girl who did the best job of modeling was chosen by a panel of judges which included Mrs. Jane Roaers, the club's sponsor, and two teachers.
