Wittman, has the monumental task of planning, designing, and assembling the yearbook. Editor Dave Thomas, with his assistant Kay Ransdell, coordinated the various departments such as layout, copy, photography, and art work into a smoothly functioning whole. Working directly under him was Associate Editor Barbara Abraham, who, with her two assistants Grace Wassmer and Anne Middle- ton, was in charge of all copy in the Windup. Her primary job was to post assignments for her staff of fourteen reporters, copyread and rewrite their articles, and get them ready for final publication. Before she could even start this job, how- ever, the groundwork had to be laid by Jim Ritchie, managing editor, and his assistants Gail Yano and Anne Emery. Starting late last year, they began work designing the layout of the yearbook, One of the most important parts of a good yearbook is its pictures. Brad Welfare, as pho- tography editor, and John Mittendorf, who helped him, took care of getting snapshots of all important school events and activities, while the art editor, Marilyn Palik, with her three assistants, did all the illustrations, Last but not least were the indispensable editorial secretaries, Kathy Jenks and Vicki Pollack, who willingly worked long hours to type the material for the yearbook. For many of these students who planned to enter some phase of journalism, valuable practice and experience working under a deadline was gained by serv- ing on the Windup editorial staff. if Ft f Windup Business Stall When putting out a publication, money can be a problem. The Windup's special Business Staff is responsible for taking care of finances, selling, and distributing the yearbook. Nancy Hewitt, business editor, began super- vising the campaign for advertisements in June, l958. Representatives spent their sum- mer visiting commercial establishments in the area to persuade their owners to advertise in the 1959 Windup, With the student salesmen were assistant editors Gretchen Golze and Pat Hanavan who helped Nancy with business details. They are important, not only in ar- ranging for the financing, but for the promo- tion of good will and a friendly attitude toward Walter Johnson by the area merchants. January marked the beginning of an earnest campaign to encourage the students to reserve their yearbooks with either full or partial payment at the bank. Mary Lee Reavis, a regular bank teller, was put in charge of this program. Money from subscriptions for year- books provided about three-fourths of the total cost. Enigmatic messages, drawings, cartoons, salutations and initials galore were contained in the dots, whose sale also aided in paying for the Windup, as did contributions from kindly sponsors. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Evelyn D. Wittman, the Business Staff has kept the year- book budget evenly afloat. The Warm-Up Walking into a new high school, particu- larly one as large as Walter Johnson, can bring doubts to even the most poised. One of the most immediately useful features of the Warm-Up, a guide to the perplexed published by the Student Council Association, is a three-page diagram of the school which serves as a needle-less compass directing the new students to their classes. Besides providing them with a digest of activities, regulations and school philosophy, the Warm-Up contains a foreword by the principal, a tribute to the Big Train, Walter Perry Johnson, for whom the school is named, and a welcome from the president of the SCA. Compiled by the Welfare Committee, whose chairman automatically serves as editor, the booklet had as editor last year Susie All- stetter. Anne Emery was the editor this year. Creative Writing Club lf you enjoy writing above and beyond homeworking assignments, you are especially welcome to join the Creative Writing Club. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Jean Phifer, these club members met to discuss their own prose and poetry. Each author reads his cre- ation and Jeff Glaser, president, led a discus- sion and criticism on the piece. Randy Fetzer, the vice-president, and Nancy Reilly, secre- tary, helped provide interesting points for dis- cussion. The purpose of these informal ses- sions was to enrich the writing style of the members and to give them the opportunity to share their writing with others. The club has been growing, and next year looks forward to furthering their club interests.
