. - .4 . , . fy g Z Viv i V .-ig. ,z zlffiff . f- QW... dedication Anywhere, anytime, William L. Bennett, cam- era in hand, may be shooting a prize photographic subject. Last year Mr. Bennett did almost all of the photography for the yearbook, as well as serving as the yearbook's faculty sponsor. For the post eleven years, at the Silver Spring lntermediate, at Leland and Western Junior High Schools, and now at Walter Johnson, our first vice- principal has devoted his professional life to ad- ministration in the Montgomery County school sys- tem. A good-humored mon who says yes ' to stu- dents if he can, rather than no, Mr. Bennett has won our affection and respect, no little feat if one considers his duties as chief disciplinorian respon- sible also for keeping attendance records and for enforcing those school policies laid down by the administration. He tries to understand your problem if you goto him, said one student who had known Mr. Bennett at Western. Real nice is another encom- ium for him used repeatedly if ungrammatically by students. We appreciate his sense of fairness and above all, his humor. Sometimes our delayed reaction to a ioke ten minutes after we have spoken to him will have us chuckling retrospectively over the dry humor we almost lost. For reasons, then, of gratitude, love, and re- spect, we dedicate this Windup to our friend, Mr. Bennett, whose service and effort have been in our behalf. WILLIAM L. BENNETT f.,-fi... .-5.-f 210 Sf? foreword Against the tumultuously colorful backdrop of an era of transition, experiment, and space flight, the Windup appears, bringing to memory our life in 1957-58. Produced by the cooperation of staff members to please you, the student, this book glimpses the glamorous high spots and familiar sidelights of a year at Walter Johnson. Our goal has been to create a picture with special meaning for each student. The ideal may not have been realized, but, as Robert Browning said. Ah, but that a man's reach should exceed his grasp. We shall be gratified if you, reader, think even a part of this goal has been grasped. Now and later as you turn the pages of this book exclaiming, here and there, l always liked that, or Oh, l didn't know that, or l remember him, we shall feel that we have published a good volume. For the staff, the Windup has been a h-igh spot, we hope it is not only a high spot for you as it serves in its capacity of an im- mediate record but also a source of happy recall and a guide to recollection as you use it as a spur to memory many years from now. Gregory brings out the har- mony and pleasure that are the basic notes for both faculty and students in their associa- tion with Walter Johnson High School. Believing that a school ought to provide opportunity for a student to develop his special interests and abilities, Mr. Gregory and his vice-principals, William L. Bennett and Miss Maude E. Arveson, administer the school in an atmosphere of pleasantness and efficiency which is essential to making maximum prog- ress. Invited to take over the principalship of Walter Johnson at its opening, Mr. Gregory, the past seventeen years a school man in Montgomery County except for four in serv- ice, has gathered around him a staff which he is convinced equals in training and de- votion to duty any in the Metropolitan Area. The administration has achieved that pri- mary core of a good school, high morale, without which excellence in scholarship and achievement in practice fall by the way. The disgruntled individual in Walter Johnson is hard to find. Because he likes working with teenagers and because he has selected a staff that re- enforces his attitude toward helping the stu- dent attain his highest level of achievement, Mr. Gregory has created in only two years a school to be reckoned with. When he talks of making Walter Johnson the best in the Area, he always speaks collec- tively, meaning his statf and his student body. No section is neglected under his direction, and the melody that rises is tuneful and true. MISS MAUDE E. ARVESON
