OH O lonmqfl osu cle rcle w rocliviuz mor toncj f 7 foreword Against the tumultuously colorful backdrop of an era of transition, experiment, and space flight, the Windup appears, bringing to memory our life in 1957-58. Produced by the cooperation of staff members to please you, the student, this book glimpses the glamorous high spots and familiar sidelights of a year at Walter Johnson. Our goal has been to create a picture with special meaning for each student. The ideal may not have been realized, but, as Robert Browning said. Ah, but that a man's reach should exceed his grasp. We shall be gratified if you, reader, think even a part of this goal has been grasped. Now and later as you turn the pages of this book exclaiming, here and there, l always liked that, or Oh, l didn't know that, or l remember him, we shall feel that we have published a good volume. For the staff, the Windup has been a h-igh spot, we hope it is not only a high spot for you as it serves in its capacity of an im- mediate record but also a source of happy recall and a guide to recollection as you use it as a spur to memory many years from now. Bennett, cam- era in hand, may be shooting a prize photographic subject. Last year Mr. Bennett did almost all of the photography for the yearbook, as well as serving as the yearbook's faculty sponsor. For the post eleven years, at the Silver Spring lntermediate, at Leland and Western Junior High Schools, and now at Walter Johnson, our first vice- principal has devoted his professional life to ad- ministration in the Montgomery County school sys- tem. A good-humored mon who says yes ' to stu- dents if he can, rather than no, Mr. Bennett has won our affection and respect, no little feat if one considers his duties as chief disciplinorian respon- sible also for keeping attendance records and for enforcing those school policies laid down by the administration. He tries to understand your problem if you goto him, said one student who had known Mr. Bennett at Western. Real nice is another encom- ium for him used repeatedly if ungrammatically by students. We appreciate his sense of fairness and above all, his humor. Sometimes our delayed reaction to a ioke ten minutes after we have spoken to him will have us chuckling retrospectively over the dry humor we almost lost. For reasons, then, of gratitude, love, and re- spect, we dedicate this Windup to our friend, Mr. Bennett, whose service and effort have been in our behalf. WILLIAM L. BENNETT f.,-fi... .-5.-f 210 Sf? GREGORY Like a contrapuntist directing a great choir, Henry C. Gregory brings out the har- mony and pleasure that are the basic notes for both faculty and students in their associa- tion with Walter Johnson High School. Believing that a school ought to provide opportunity for a student to develop his special interests and abilities, Mr. Gregory and his vice-principals, William L. Bennett and Miss Maude E. Arveson, administer the school in an atmosphere of pleasantness and efficiency which is essential to making maximum prog- ress. Invited to take over the principalship of Walter Johnson at its opening, Mr. Gregory, the past seventeen years a school man in Montgomery County except for four in serv- ice, has gathered around him a staff which he is convinced equals in training and de- votion to duty any in the Metropolitan Area. The administration has achieved that pri- mary core of a good school, high morale, without which excellence in scholarship and achievement in practice fall by the way. The disgruntled individual in Walter Johnson is hard to find. Because he likes working with teenagers and because he has selected a staff that re- enforces his attitude toward helping the stu- dent attain his highest level of achievement, Mr. Gregory has created in only two years a school to be reckoned with. When he talks of making Walter Johnson the best in the Area, he always speaks collec- tively, meaning his statf and his student body. No section is neglected under his direction, and the melody that rises is tuneful and true. MISS MAUDE E. ARVESON 5 3 First row: Second row: Third row: Fourth row: Fifth row: Inset picture: THOMAS J. M Y .. fi 6 X x CT DONALD MILLER WILLIAM MAURY MARIE POWELL CORDELL HART senior class history The graduating class of i958 of Walter Johnson Senior High School has had a short but important history. The parents who heard us vocifer- ously announce ourselves in i940 could not have known we would be graduating from Walter Johnson in l958. Walter Johnson, being now at the end of its second year, was a long way even from a drawing board when most of us were born. World War ll was being felt in the shortage of teachers, in crowded classrooms, and in an enrollment predicted to be staggering in successive years when we were to be in school. Al- though problems such as these were extreme in some areas, those of us who were fortunate enough to live in Montgomery County had the advantage of a forward-looking school system and an alert citizenry who saw to it that we had relatively little make-shift schooling. We attended junior high schools all over the county, and some of us came into the area from different parts of the country, after which most of us started high school as sophomores in our neighboring school, Bethes- da-Chevy Chase Senior High School. Our life as students of Walter Johnson began September 4, l956, when we were juniors. Bethesda-Chevy Chase played host to us for six weeks, for we held classes at their campus until our building could be occupied. Our physical occupation of Walter Johnson Senior High School began October 22, l956. Even without a building we had got off to a fine start with our own Student Council and the beginnings of a well organized student body. When the big day arrived, we moved into our own new and beautiful building. There was a hectic period at first when we waited for the com- pletion of the cafeteria, the gym, and the installation of lockers. Some of us still recall painfully hauling our heavy books around all day and home every night. By January, however, such matters being well in hand, we could turn our attention to other more telling things. I8 After the first year when we had established creed and a motto, when we had published severc issues of the Johnson Journal, had designed our clas ring, had issued the Warm-Up, a handbook to ne' students, had circulated our initial Windup, and ha cheered on our teams, we actually became senior: We had been the top class our first year in the builc ing, for there was no graduating class in l957, bl. it was not until the beginning of our true senior yec last fall that we felt the responsibility placed on 1. as seniors and, more important, as the first gradua' ing class of Walter Johnson Senior High School. This year has seen foundation laid down in mar areas. The Wind Up had been formally staffed, l: student vote, the Johnson Journal became the Pitcl published weekly by the newly offered class in jou nalism, the Spectator, a creative writing magazini enjoyed its literary birth, the band was now in un form playing for the Pom pon team, the Majorette for school games, and at public functions, the foo ball team set an example for clean and victorioi participation in sports, the drama groups entertainer we received our class rings: and the library was ad' ing books on its shelves as the PTA, making this the chief project, lent its support to the school. Tl' academic tenor of the school strengthened as v took our qualifying college entrance examination and our reputation in the community began to I established as we applied for employment. We had come to a seldom rivalled position, v infants of World War Il, where after uncertain ed cational beginnings, we lent our strength to the foun ing ofa new senior high school. We want to rememb ourselves as the graduating class that establisha strong foundation and good example for the futu classes of Walter Johnson, mostiqf us will want think back on this as an uncomrn-on privilege. V are very proud to have had this chance to attend an to build in Walter Johnson, and we hope the futu will prove that we built well. D. CARL ABERNETHY, JR.
