Student Council Adds New Projects to Traditional Activities This year ' s Student Council has continued to sponsor its traditional programs. These activities include the Homecoming Dance and Homeroom Thanksgiving Bas- kets. Increased emphasis was placed on class projects. The 9th grade successfully completed a Keep the Cafeteria Clean week. The 10th grade supported Feed a Friend, a branch of the Ira Jarrell Milk Fund. The 11th grade initiated a paper sale. And the 12th grade ' s project was a Toys for Tots Campaign. Various new activities accentuated the traditional ones. The Student Council selects monthly a teacher who has contributed to school functions. The first to receive the honor, Teacher of the Month, was Mr. Gus Peterson, a new art teacher at George. Care packages sent to Vietnam and the opening soc hop, in honor of the football team, were also among the additions to the regular program. The Student Council is composed of gradewide officers and homeroom presidents. To qualify for gradewide offices, candidates must make speeches before their class or student body and must have a B average. Selections are made by each grade for gradewide offices and by the student body for school wide offices. Student Council inducts eighth grade officers. Co-Ed-Hi-Y Provides Volunteers For March of Dimes Campaign Chaplain Steve Hackler leads a devotional to start the monthly meetings. Under the sponsorship of Miss Armbrecht, Mrs. Peb- worth and Mr. Peterson, the Co-Ed-Hi-Y Club is one of George ' s notable service clubs. The club is a chapter of National Co-Ed-Hi-Y and is under the supervision of Pate Bridges, YMCA director. The club has directed a clothing drive at school for needy families in the area. Volunteers canvassed for the March of Dimes as well as helping implement the Viet- nam Christmas Cards project. A delegation for the George Club participated in the Hi-Y Breakfast at the Americana Motor Hotel preceding the Youth assembly. Members are eagerly anticipating the annual spring trip to Camp Waco. This meeting will now come to order, directs Co-Ed-Hi-Y President Lynn Nelson. Senior Y -Teens Barbara Brownie e, Pat Murphy and Judy Bales visit with Mrs. Bullard at Hiahvieiv Nursing Home. Y-Teens, sponsored by Miss Hice, is another of George ' s service clubs. It is directly co- ordinated with the central Y.W.C.A. Y-Teens members have participated in the annual af- fairs held at the central branch such as the Fall Festival of Nations and the Hanging of the Greens. The Y-Teens goal of growing in friendship with all peoples is admirably ful- filled by members who tutor underprivileged elementary school children under the direction of the Teenage Service Corp. Several girls have also spent many volunteer hours at neighboring Highview Nursing Home. The club has recently divided into junior and senior groups. The Junior Y-Teens is composed of eighth and ninth graders and Senior Y-Teens is made up of upperclassmen. This allows the girls to choose service projects fitting their capabilities. All girls enrolled in Home Economic classes at George were exposed to the Future Homemakers of America club. Those desiring outside work related to home economics became active members of the club. The Simplicity Pattern fashion show pre- sented club members with ideas and inspiration for future individual projects. Home Economics students in the 8th, 9th and 10th were models of the new spring fashions. As a service project, the club contributed a bush to the beautify the school campaign. The money was raised by sponsoring a dance in the fall. The Walter F. George Chapter of the Fu- ture Teachers of America has had a busy year. The officers of this active group are Laura Buckner, president; Nilda Soto, vice-president; and Joyce Jones, secretary-treasurer. Some of the numerous activities in which the F.T.A. has participated involved other chapters of the F.T.A. They again took part in the Fifth District Convention which was held in November with the George Chapter in charge of registration. Cindy Lance was nominated for vice-director of this convention. The George F.T.A. won the attendance prize which was a free trip to the state convention. The 1967-68 Georgian Staff had quite a time meet- ing deadlines and raising money to meet our goal, but we did it! Individual and combined effort was used to complete each section. Those experienced on the staff guided the new members in learning the skills of year- book journalism. Our annual sales topped any others in previous years, adding to the funds which we raised by sponsoring the annual Outstanding Seniors Dance. This year ' s Georgian has many new dimensions in- cluding color pictures and a new screening device for the division pages. The design of the cover is always the biggest decision made and with a joint combination of ideas the staff turned out an originally designed cover with a fabric base. Providing students with opportunities to develop an increased sensitivity to the needs of others and an appreciation of what people can do for other people is the High School Red Cross ' sustaining purpose. Many requests for service come to the Red Cross youth from Veterans and Military Hospitals, State and County Hospitals, Children ' s Homes, Homes for the Aged, Day Nurseries and others. By participation in these programs, students have an opportunity to grow in social responsibility and to respond to the needs of others. At George High, the Red Cross Club has made and decorated 50 Christmas stockings for the 36th Evacuation Hospital in Vietnam, made 75 Flash cards for the mentally retarded adults and stuffed 26 animals for the Children ' s Home. The Club is now in the process of making scrap books and will make 100 tote bags for the hospitals. Directing these activities are Barbara Brown- lee, president; Debbie Williams, vice-president; and Gay Irwin, secretary- treasurer. Tote Sags will be distributed to children ' s hospitals throughout the city. Volunteers prepare ma- terial that Red Cross members will make in- to tote bags. French Club Studies French Language, Customs, and Culture. French club meetings often held at members ' homes provided opportunities to view films, sing songs and present skits all in French. Miss Nash spon- sors the club with a membership of fifty French students. The purpose of the Art Club is to arouse and to aid in sus- taining, a direct and lively interest in all forms of art. Art Club activities that the members were involved with for the past year include; making 1500 Christmas cards which were sent to Vietnam, touring several museums and craft shops, and taking field trips to scenic areas for sketching exercises. Periodically, guest lecturers are invited to attend the meet- ings. The primary purpose for lectures is to help stress the esthetic relationship to be found among the works of artists sep- arated by space, time, and media ; and the understanding of art as an important element in the cultural development of mankind throughout the ages. Falcon Band Talented Performances Keep Spirits High The task of a high school band is a very difficult one. Half-time shows at football games, special assem- blies, and pep rallies are only a few of the major ones. The Walter F. George Band has done an outstanding job of accomplishing these tasks. Fifty-five is not a large number of band members, but with much practice and good leadership this small band has been made a very effective one. Much credit is due to band director Wayne G. Goggine, but much is also due to student leaders. Captain Barry Welsh, First Lieutenant Mike Cavallin, Second Lieutenant David Brinson, Sergeant Major Danny Talley, and Drum Major Joe Duren have put forth much effort to make this band the best it could possibly be. Following an ancient custom, Cadet Lt. Colonel David Bankston receives saber from his mother. On October 24, 1967, the Walter F. George R.O.T.C. held its first Sabre Day, beginning an annual tradition. The occasion was one of solemnity. Sabre Day is when the officers receive their swords. This is a great honor because the presentation of the sword symbolizes the many hours of hard work that the cadets have put into the military program. The cadet officers are not chosen at random. Each cadet officer is chosen on a basis of academic grades and conduct grades. The officers are usually chosen from the third year cadets but, the mili- tary is only in its second year causing the officers to be chosen from second year cadets. The sword is presented to the officers by their mothers following a custom that had its origin in ancient Greece. Each cadet officer is allowed to choose a sponsor for the entire school year. This sponsor may be chosen from any grade. These sponsors receive the same rank as the cadet officers. There were many visiting dignitaries present at George ' s Sabre Day including many retired veterans from the different parts of the state. The oath of office was administered by Mr. Floyd J. Hendrix, our principal, to the cadet officers as the entire student body looked on. After the oath, the officers returned to their positions and command to witness the pass in review. The band played marching music for the cadets while the battalion marched past the reviewing stand. A reception was given at the conclusion of the ceremony for the officers and their guests. After dropping their first game to the Northside Tigers, 27-0, the Falcons gained momentum and experience and scored three successive victories by whitewashing Roose- velt, 21-0, Sylvan, 14-0 and East Atlanta 21-0. A big highlight was the homecoming victory over Bass, 7-6. This was the first homecoming game ever won by a Falcon team. Anoth er first for George High was their defeat over Brown, 14-0. Near the end of the season George faced Carver High with the Milk Bowl in range. This was a very crucial game, and even though George was defeated, the Falcons proved they were tough. George faced Fulton, their arch rival, in the last game of the season. Although George came out on the short end of the score, it was a closely fought game. At the end of the season George High had five wins and four losses, a very good finish for a tough year. This season ' s captains were Bobby Flem- ons, David Bankston, and Clint Dickerson, all seniors and outstanding players. The B-team came from behind in four games to win with the Brown defeat highlighting the season. Their only loss was to Dykes, who was undefeated. Of the twelve touch- downs scored by the team, eleven were scored by John Fitz- gerald, a second-year B-team player. Bobby Flemons, uncontested most valuable player, set a single game record of 45 points. The younger members also gained needed experience that will benefit them next year. Although the season as a whole was not a winning one, it was highlighted in the aspects of individual skill and second effort combined for synchronized teamwork. I If one were asked to define in one word the ide as expressed by the words sacrifice, work, dedication, joy, and despair, the ' word would be athletics. The girls basketball team at George High is fully aware of this. The pre-season games ended with a 4-1 record and an invitation to the Bass Christ- mas Tournament. However the Ladies from George were eliminated by North Fulton in the first round. The sub-region opened on a disastrous note with two straight losses to Carver and Brown. The team rebounded, though, and finished the sub-region play with a 5-7 record. The girls won their first game ever in the city tournament by beating Roosevelt. Members of the Homecoming Court selected by popular vote of the student body were escorted by Varsity football players. Each thrilled member of the court, especially the seniors, anx- iously awaited the announcement that Elaine Parker would reign at 1968 Homecoming Queen. Miss Nancy Prickett, last year ' s queen, crowned Elaine as the entire court received the audience ' s applause. Regally hearing the crown, Queen Elaine Parker assumes her throne.i Candid views of Elaine at a Student Council meeting re- flect the natural beauty, poise, and involvement which lead the student body to vote her 1968 Homecoming Queen. Each page is more than just a grouping of pictures and copy. These pages are inanimate impressions of the events in a year gone by — a year to be remembered. Special thanks are extended to Miss Andrews and Mr. Peterson. Their volunteered guidance gave the staff valuable knowledge of yearbook production. Our advisor Miss Eustis, the ' 68 staff and myself leave you with — memories of ' 68. Lynne Mathews Editor
