MARY 19 CANTON CENTRAL CATHOLIC 106 The 1983 Freshman Football Team, Consisting of fifty-eight members, finished their season with a 4-2-1 record. The team was coached by Mr. Gary Howieson, Mr. Brad Horvat, Mr. Dan Ricci and Mr. Dan Weiss and led by co- captains Mike Murphy and Gomer Smith. The leading scorer and passer on the team was Gomer Smith lwith 6 touchdowns and a 48'Vo completion rateb. Leading ruchers were Gomer Smith, Brad Rico and Doug Carr. Walsh's 26-0 shutout over Akron North and 18- 0 victory over Bedford were season highlights.

Pumphrey. junior Varsity Football lt would appear that the 1983 l.V. Football Team had a long and terrible season, they faced a competitive scedule and won only a single game. Their final season record was 1-6-1. The Team was coached by Mr. Andrew Thomas and Mr. Doug james. Mr. Thomas expressed a belief that the 1984 l.V. Football season will be more successful. Soccer Senior captain, john O'Neil, takes a well deserved break. The 1983 Varsity Soccer Team, under the leadership of senior captain lohn O'Neil and coach Mr. john Kissner, completed another immensely successful soccer season for Walsh, compiling a record of 16-3-2. 11 of those victories were shut-outs. Teamwork and a strong defense were especially strong points of the team. These strong points lamong othersl helped Walsh to win an impressive number of matches, including a victory against St. lohn's of Toledo. The Walsh team beat the otherwise undefeated St. lohn's team 1-0. Although the team was successful, they did not achieve their goal: To retain the state soccer championship title which the 1982 team had won. According to.most of the soccer players, the 1983 team was just as talented as the 1982 team. Cooperation was better on the 1983 team. However, the team lacked scoring power. This lack of scoring power played a part in Walsh's defeat by North Royalton in the state semi-finals. This defeat stopped the Walsh team from playing in the state finals and bringing another state championship title to Walsh.
