ldentsficatmn CBN? Academics Still 1 Here At Walsh College The Walsh team rolled to an easy victory over Bedford and University School for their second consecutive appearance on Academic Challenge. The team was coached by Mrs. Josephine Webster and composed of seniors Diego Betita, Steve Hatch, and Ken Wemm. Early in the competition, a lead was gained by the Walsh team. This lead was maintained and increased. Walsh scored a total of 500 points. This was more than the combined scores of the other two schools. 323 W i i 16 . a H-ff? They did this by scoring in the top one half of one percent of all students in the United States who took the PSAT lPreliminary Scholastic Achievement Testi. Seniors lim Riley and Ken Wemm represented Walsh in this competition which awards scholarships for outstanding academic achievement. Walsh's academic excellence was also shown by its students who were, simultaneously, fulltime students of Walsh and also students of the University of Akron. Seniors Ron Bohna, Kanny Grewal, jim Riley and Mark Staneluis took Spanish three, and Carl Traynor took advanced Calculus at the University. Traynor considers it a Great experience and feels that this gave him an idea of college attitudes and help with the college scene. He also feels that attending the University made him More interested in learning. Walsh's success in Academic Challenge, its placement of two students as National Merit Semifinalists and its students at the University of Akron prove that Walsh had great success with the most important competition of all: academics. Strong f Heart . . . A Week Of Spirit Spirit Week 1983 began Tuesday September 27th as the Student Council sponsored a Grub Day. The S350 collected helped to defray costs for the Dance and reduced ticket prices. The Spirit Rally held on Thursday featured the maroon and gold dress sported by the Student Body and a speech by Head Coach Gerry Rardin. The Rally proved an excellent precursor to the Bonfire held later that evening. The soccer team hosted Stow at Bpm in Conway Memorial Stadium and soundly defeated the Bulldogs before the partisan crowd of several hundred fans. The Bonfire immediately following the game was slow to get started, but guest speaker Mr. Dan Ricci lclass of 76D delivered a stirring speech that served to heighten spirit. Unfortunately the football team lost a tough game to the Bulldogs of Stow the following evening. Halftime event included a parade as Kim Miller was named Homecoming Queen for 1983. Also named to the Homecoming Court were: Gina Moskal, Sue Dountz, Donna Grace Vorhegy, and Lisa Fantone. The 1983 Homecoming Dance featured music by Puzzle and the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. Several members of the faculty and administration expressed their thanks for the best Homecoming Dance they had attended. The Student Council would like to thank the Mother's Club for their generous contribution of 50 what if Sheg my Sister? time and effort. Mike Rose and date dance chest to cheek.
