Uur Senwr Trip South of the Border Down Mexlco Way yes the Senior class of 58 was fmally off to thls colorful country whlch had been thetr Land of Dreams for several months The trme was 11 30 Frrday nrght May 16 Commencement had been over only a couple of hours but durrng thls trme we krds had taken care of a number of last mmute thrngs lrke pamung the town loading luggage saymg good bye to sweethearts etc It seemed lrke rt was no trme before we were 1n Amarrllo where we switched from the school buses to our chartered bus The chartered bus seemed hke a luxury ll was so much bigger and more comfortable too In fact tt was so comfortable that a lot of the kids decrded to be Sleepy Trme Gals and guys Some of the others found rr falmosty Just rrghr for a good card game Mrs Doxle who was one of the frrst players was also one of tl' frrst wmners especrally rf she could get them to play the games she wanted to All the sleeping and card playing came to a halt at Lubbock where everyone prled out for breakfast The argument about Texas that had been golng on between some of the glrls and the bus drrver Jlggs also came to a halt when we stopped for drnner Deep rn the Heart of Texas at San Angelo because we changed drrvers and the new one Coffey wouldn t argue We skrpped a scheduled supper stop so we could get rnto Laredo earlrer Once m Laredo we swlgched moms to sun our taste got settled ate supper and wandered around Most everyone was 1n bed farrly early but ll drdn t help any when rt came to gettmg up the next morning We were about an hour late getung started and then we had to stop for customs ln Nuevo Laredo We fmally were on our way m ole Mexico When we exchanged our money at the border Ruth thought she was rrch but rt drdn t take her long to fmd out drfferent After we stopped rn Monterrey for dinner thtngs were pretty quret as a lot of heads were noddrng and we couldn't talk to Ricky and Ed our fme bus drivers because they didn t speak English Before we had arrtved rn Valles however we had put Lupe to work as our tnterpreter so we could talk to them We finally got to Valles at about 9 30 and even at thls late hour most of the krds msrsted on gorng for a Moonlrght Swrm before they would eat supper It was rn the wee small hours of the morrung before everyone got to bed so of course we got a late start that mormng Our rrde that day was pretty but not too pleasant The curves on the wtndlng road over the motmtalns made Erma Norma and some of the other krds srck Everyone pepped up as we got closer to Mexico C1ty We really felt llke we were rn Beautrful Mexico when we were welcomed at our hotel the Romfel by a typical Mexrcan band We would llke to say graclos to the Contmentla Company for this warm welcome The evenmg was spent explorrng the crty U1 the ra1n The grrls were really happy when the lrghts went out later that mght wlule they were tryrng to set therr hau Tuesday mornlng we started off bnght but not early for our tour of the crty and l.lfI1V6l'S1Iy We toured the downtown area visrted the Natronal Place where we saw some beautrful murals tellmg the hrstory of Mexrco and shopped at the glass s1lver and leather factortes rn the mornmg We had one misfortune Chesna farnted from too much exercrse and excltement for such a hrgh alt1tude She made it alright the rest of the tour w1th the help of Howard s strong arm Durrng the afternoon we vrsrted both the new and old nrce resrdentral secuons the magmfrcent bull rmg and the beautrful Um verslty C1ty That nrght we decrded to walk to the lar alar games one of Mexrco s favorite sports It took us qulte a wh1le to get there because we got lost and spent qurte awlule Standlng on the Corner trymg to revrve Carol who was the second vrctrm of the hrgh alt1tude Most everyone thought the game was fascrnatmg feven rf we drdn t understand ll alll but the bettlng was pretty norsy On Wednesday we toured the Shrlne of our Lady Guadalupe and the pyramlds of the Stm and Moon After wamng for Mr Adams and Mr Cummings who were the last ones to cllmb down from the pyramrd we returned to the hotel ln trme for the gtrls to do some shopprng For the evemngs entertarnment the girls went to an exhrbrtron of natlve Mexrcan dances while the boys went out on the town No one was very eager to go to bed early that nrght because we were headrng home manana When we loaded the bus Thursday morning we found we were takmg home a lot more stuff than we had brought There was hardly room for Larry B Glenn and James b1g black hats and Mary Ann had qurte a trme takmg care of the glass ware she had bought Everyone was glad that we took a drfferent route back because thls one went around the mountatns mstead of over them We arrrved rn San Luls Potost farrly early that evenrng early enough for some of the krds to take a swlm before supper The rest of us however decrded we lrked our Moonlight Swtms better and waited untrl afterwards wh1le the others went to the show Eunrce and Laila were about the last ones out of the pool and Johnny ended up taking her beach towel rn wrth her We got an earlrer start than usual Friday mornmg too early for Bruce I guess He slept almost all the way to Mon terrey where we stopped for the nrght Most of the krds went to bed pretty early that nrght to prepare for our long rrde the next day Some of the krds dld go to a show and Kay Fonda Rosalre Connre Elmer Leroy Larry G and Gary were extra energetic so they went danclng I don t thmk any of them were saylng I Could Have Danced All Night though as they turned out to be the sleepy ones the next day We were back rn Laredo about noon Saturday and agam we had to go through customs We fmally left Laredo for our last lap home about 1 30 Our supper stop was at San Angelo and we changed bus drrvers from Rogers to Salem at Lub bock Amarrllo was a pretty site to us about 3 30 Sunday mornrng but the school buses weren t They seemed awful small and crowded By the time we finally made rt home about 8 30 that mornmg everyone was so txred that they were past the sleeprng stage so most of us never got to bed before Sunday nlght Did we have a good t1me'7 S1l Sll It was wonderful and we
