Class THE FORTY -NINERS' ODE By Trafford Leland Our turbulent years at this high school Will ne'er be regarded as naught, The slates, the books, the Golden Rule Nor the subjects we have been taught. Now all these trials are behind us, With the biggest tests yet to come. But the goalposts of life will find us Strong, with a will to overcome. The spirit of this Class of Forty -Nine Will remain with us the rest of our days, We'll treasure memories of friends and times so fine As we all go our separate ways. WALPOLE SCHOCL SONG By Joanne Menard Proudly now our voices rise, ringing strong and clear As we sing our anthem to the school we hold so dear. We, her sons and daughters, staunch, steadfast, and true, Faithful to her colors, to the white and blue. Chorus Here's to Walpole High School! Walpolei Bless her name! Whether in defeat or victory we will love her just the same On the field of battle loudly shout her praise, To dear old Walpole High we'l1 be loyal always. 17 A- ,i , N THE SENIOR FAREWELL 4 WORDS by -rormne Meurmo lx!-n 4- K blW IU1Flf e x -I ' , , Y neazlzma: :.-E.- 5 -: - L lc F7321-Q-iki - ss-nchs-unwise 14 WQ1.. Brennan At the first official class meeting the Seniors formulated plans for the annual food sale, which was featured at the Senior booth in the school fair. The group also selected committees for the designing and the decoration of its entry in the Float Contest, an innovation of the fair this year. These affairs found all the groups putting in many hours of hard work. The theme of the class float was the Gold Rush of 1849, because this group hoped to be graduated in 1949. Symbolically then the mountain constructed on the float represented in this instance the obstacles to be overcome by the group before reaching the goal of the year, graduation. This idea won for the Seniors the first prize in the Float Contest. Portraying pioneer women in their colorful costumes were the following girls: Janet Bryant, Ruth Hurd, Joanne Menard, Vaughnette Nystrom, Muriel Murray, and Virginia Westcott. To heighten the authenticity of this picture many ancient firearms we re carried by these women to lend the finished touch. A great deal of credit went to Miner Roger Wallace, who ably managed the hand- some team that pulled the float. After the ordering of graduation pictures, announcernents, and name cards, the next big event for the class was its Baked Bean Supper and Talent Show on February twelfth. This evening was a huge success, memorable for its delightful food and refreshing entertainment. The class is very appreciative of the support of the townspeople who have so generously helped the group in its efforts to finance a class trip. THE JUNIOR CLASS Officers President .... .......' Carroll Paine ' Secretary ..... . . .Shirley Pomeroy Treasurer. . . .Joan Aldrich Adviser. . . . . . . . . ..... . .Mrs. Russell Galloway The Juniors sponsored a most attractive float captioned Junior' Winterland. All the popular winter sports were represented on the float by the well-outfitted class. To correlate sports like skiing and skating with the growing, popularity of winter ca rnivals, the Juniors selected three snow queens to reign over the pres- entation. These girls were Joan Aldrich, Joan Daniels, and Shirley Pomeroy. Z4 A .41 A 5 At the school fair this group sold hot dogs and pop at its booth in order to raise money for the long-awaited Junior Prom. During January, working toward this same end, the class conducted a food sale at the Legion Hall in order to in- crease its treasury. Having decided on the theme of the decorations, the Juniors have agreed to hold the Prom in May. lt is their hope that everyone will join with them to make the dance a success in every way. Miss Lucille Blakeslee The unique float devised by this class pictured a group enjoying a husking bee. Thanks to Bill Fletcher who brought down his oxen ,for the occasion. The float was pu1l.ed in appropriate fashion. No one who viewed this replica of an an- nual autumn festival would doubt that the class certainly enjoyed itself during the parade. A candy sale is being planned to benefit the class funds. ln all probability this will be conducted during the early part of March. THE FRESHMAN CLASS Officers President .... ...... Desmarais Showing an amazing amount of class spirit and co-operation, the Freshmen had a great time planning a float which represented all the various activities of Walpole High. Bandsmen, baseball players, basketball players, and the foods class are typical examples of the group's lively portrayal. Through their enthu- siasm the members of this class and their activities added a lotof fun to the high ly-praised fair parade. l 2.5 X THE WALPOLE VARSITY FRONT ROW: Left to Right: Philip Kolvoord and Donald Houghton. Its improvement under the able guidance of Mr. Robert Desmarais was so outstanding that Walpole was invited to the Class C Tournament conducted in the Dartmouth Alumni gymnasium at Hanover. Although handicapped by the illness of a varsity player toward the end of the season, the team found the second string able to fill in exceptionally well. Two of the most exciting games played this year were those with Walpole's traditional rival, Vilas. In view of the closeness of the scores, another season may find Walpole victorious in a contest noted for its spirit, fair play, and good sports- manship. , At the Class C Tournament held February 23, 24, 25, and 26, Walpole en- tered the preliminaries to play an exceptionally fine game and overcame Troy 50- 32. In the quarter finals the next afternoon the Walpole team lost, 44-16, to a powerful Ashland Quintet, which went on to win the Class C Championship.
