We are honoring one special person who has demonstrated outstanding abilities in teaching and in a commitment to the youth of today. It is with due respect that we honor Mr. Ralph Webster. Mr. Webster was born in Racoon, Indiana, and attended Russleville High School. Here he played on their basketball team. Upon graduating in 1924, he attended the University of Illinois, where he majored in Phys. Ed. and Mathematics. During his stay at the University, Mr. Webster was on three Big Ten Wrestling Championship Teams. In 1928 he was the Big Ten Heavyweight Champ! Mr. Webster received his B.S. in Education and went on to A. I. Kent High School in Indiana to teach. There he coached all sports, taught boys and girls phys. ed., math, and manual arts. In 1930 Mr. Webster came to Columbus as a Pro-Wrestler under Al Haft. He was then assigned to East High School where he coached football, basketball, and track. He also taught phys. ed. and math. In 1960 he transferred to Walnut Ridge where he coached football, track and taught arithmetic. Mr. Webster has managed the Central District Basketball Tournaments for 23 years. He is very proud of his family, his wife, two sons, a daughter-in-law, and three darling grandchildren, not to mention Snoopy, his dog. Mr. Webster is a very positive man and is always optimistic about the future. His ambitions are to make a hole in one, bowl a 300 game and continue making new friends while keeping the old ones. The 1971-1972 Walnut Ridge Student Council was advised by Mrs. Genevieve Henning. The structure of the Council was changed this year by the Cabinet officers. Instead of homeroom representatives each class had a proportionate number of representatives elected by the class. The size of the Council was cut in half k in order to function better. The meetings were held in the library from 12:20-1:20. The main fundraiser of the Council this year was the Scots Are Back buttons. They were proudly flashed at many Walnut Ridge games. The main event Council sponsored this year l was Homecoming Activities. These included Top Ten Assembly, the Ceremonies on the field the night of the crowning, and the Homecoming dance. The dance was one of the best Walnut Ridge has ever had! Throughout the year Student Council worked on projects dealing with curriculum changes, dress code changes, the traffic problem, and a smoking lounge. The Council was not successful in all of their attempts though because of the apathy. forty-one -8 amilton Rd., D0nald's 2520 S. H amilton Rd., 866-8214, Mc 2520 S. High school students from across the state participated in the event, which was held at the university's Alumni Gymnasium. The students formulated a complete platform, nominated various popular political candidates, and ultimately selected their final party choice for the presidency and vice-presidency. The emphasis was on realism. The students held cacauses, gave eloquent nominating speeches, participated in massive and noisy demonstrations, and finally pledged and gave their delegation votes to their favorite candidate. sixty 31-1-our V .. x 1l1'T:'... xx W 4 'Marv 15 9 MW Hg f. ,g NJ .VL f as 5, KW I sixty-one sixty-two .K I 11? Walnut Ridge's first year was 1961-1962, during September and October, the student body was housed at Eastmoor High. The new building was occupied on October 24 by 1,022 students in grades 7-11. The gym and music building wasn't completed until the second year. Gym classes were held in the student lounge until then. Of the 55 people on the original staff, only 10 still l'GFTl3ll'i. The school has a capacity of 1,500 students, and an enrollment this year of 1768. This made it neces- sary to use a split session sche- dule for the first time. This worked out fine in many respects, but much school spirit, and many club activities were lost. one hundred sixty-seven DAVID ABLES Dave Chess Club-3,45 lr. Although we realize it is impossible to portray all we would have liked to within these pages, it is hoped that in years to come the Tartan will stir your memory. Though some of these memories may be disappointing and others beautiful, we all can agree that this has been an interesting year-Faces and places and things we have done. At this time l would like to give due thanks and appreciation to a few special people . . , Chris Casey, my right hand. l could never tell you how much I appreciate all of the help you gave me! Mrs. Susan Neininger, Tartan Advisor, and Mr. Wes Mirick, Paragon Representative, Your numerous hours of advice and help have made this book what it is! lt has been a tough year for me, but you've both made my job easier. Your marvelous cooperation and interest is beyond what I could possibly say. To the portion of the staff who worked dilligently and patiently throughout the year, goes my thanks. And last, but certainly not least, to those few who were always willing to help when an emergency arose, thank you. We have left an old year and are venturing into a new and more challenging one. lt's a bit exciting. . .a bit frightening. . .as the images unwind, Like the circles that you find, in the Windmills of your mind!
