Look Ma, no hands. 18 FOOTBALL This year's vatsaly football squad start- ed out the year with an unimpressive 04 start. but hopes were high for a strong finish. Coach Torn Sharp explained the slow start by emphasiztng that this year's team was a young. inexperienced squad and that there was much room for them to Improve as the year progressed The team was led by the agile quarterback. Mark Pinson. whose ability to run helped the team tmmensely, Coach Sharp alsu expressed his belief that the juniors on the squad would profit from playing time this yeat and pethdps start the year bet- ter In the 88 season. I Word!!! ttuum I The reserve footbail team got off to an impressive g l-l start in the 87 season. Coach Tudor was very x surprised by the strength that he saw coming out of the backfield. The offense was able to move the bail wetl and the offensive line showed a strength not seen very often on a team at this level of play. The coach explained that the defensive line was quite young and with limited practice during the summer months. had not gotten the amount of intense training that the older members had gotten. The Coach expressed high hopes for the team in their league play. Our junior high football program is the foundation for the Mighty Eagles! The coach is David Morrical. Along with him. the captains, Tom Dietrich and Wyman Morris are leading the team to the upcoming tournaments. The starting seniors are, on the front line, Joe Smith and Wyman Morris. At half- back is Will Adams. and at full-back is John Williams. Greg Sullivan, and John Wocher. The ABC of soccer, tri-captains Andi Stamp, Betsie Condon, and Cary Schatzel, keep optimistic attitudes and are good leadership models not only for the team, but for the rest of Walnut. With games like their 9-0 shutout of Seven Hills, Coach Clay Revis' girls are surely turning some heads and proving to everyone that they are one of the best teams in the city. . Junior Jennifer Zeff was the number one singles player. Seniors Allison Harris and Jeanie Jason played sec- ond and third singles. The doubles teams consisted of Sarah Boettger, Laura Lazarus, Mary Merkel, Janie Merkel, Meryl Hattenbach, Dani Keemer, and Amy Huenefeld. Coach Tudor ex- plained that the team is yOung and not used to working with each oth- er and with further exposure to one another they should prosper, The coach is looking to a stronger more experienced team next sea- son. Consisting mostly of newcomers, both the girls' and the boys teams' paddled their way to the top. Devoting many long hours to training, this talented group of people has become very physically fit. This complete physical and emotional dedication to their sport with little or no reward except seIf-satisfaction has forced them to be highly disciplined athletes. Kim Warfield, Tereasa White RIFLE CORPS - Danyel Johnson, Vicky Meadows, Jen- nifer Powell, Latonia Saner, Amy Short TEAM RIFLE CORPS ' The 1987 Walnut Hills Marching Band, led by Mr. Kruze and assistant Mr. Hill, consisted of 125 talented musicians and flag corps members. The highlight of their season was playing at halftime of the December 20 Ben- gal's game at Riverfront Stadium. Although me weather was unbearably cold, receiving w autographs and hugs from the Bengal players made the experience worthwhile. The March- ing Blue and Gold finished third overall at Amelia, third overall at Colerain, and second overall at Miamisburg. The band also played in the UC Homecoming parade, the Harvest Home parade, Music Bowl, and the opening of the Kenwood Towne Centre. Although Walnut will be losing forty of its band and flag corps members, next year's Marching Band will be successful if it marches in the footsteps of 1987s crew. ,7 F'i Band Council serves as a bridge between the band members and the band directorst If there are any griev- ances between them. it is the responsibility of Band Council to see that they are resolved.
