Text from Pages 1 - 256 of the 1985 volume:

4 Post In order to prepare for the future, we must understand the post. We must remember the Watergate scon- dol, rhe cogp d'eror of Uganda, the invasion of Grenade. We musr use our senses to hear and see all that happens around us end to learn from the actions of orhers 0nd from our own mistakes. We must use 0L knowledge, our rorionoIe, oufcom mon sense to make decisions. The post is an example for us. Nothing can be relived; however, the post can be 0 reminder of rhe horrible holocausrs and wars, mistakes which we neveu wont to make again. The Past . 6 Chaices At this timeikwihjour lives there'ore many dedsions which most be made. What college to go to, what field to go into, Who to vote for. Though our parents have mode greet impressions on our lives, rhese ore our choices to make. We are just beginning to realize the decision making and responsibilities that come with adulthood. Walnut Hills has given us the basis for our future. It has helped us rhrough six years and starred us on the road to the future. Yet we stand or this starting point with the decision of which path to follow. A decision rhor no one can make for us. Whor kind of person to be, what kind of life to live. We all must dore, we all must take that first step. 7 k How many times have we raised our hands in class to 05k 0 question? How many thousands of questions hove been answered or this school? The questions we ask are never end- ing and should be never ending. Why are we in Nicaragua? Why are we supporting the South African opor- theid? We must question the actions of others, for our society evolves around the cooperation and participa- tion of everyone. A democracy is the force of the people. We must ques- tion oppression, inequality, and those who simplify problems to o moralistic level. All is questionable and in order to sustain our society we must wonder, disagree, and protest. e uestions . . . Questions 9 I . .K' J; - . ..M.H 10 Problems 12 Reasons Discovering With every new quesrion answered thousands more arise. With every solution found, 0 hundred new problems are seen. For every op- porem reason, many more are underlying. The reasons compile until 0 formality, 0 direction emerges. Like 0 rolling snowball collecting more snow 05 ir descends down a hill. The speed becoming greater as the moss becomes greater. The reasons odd rogerher and create answers. And answers become rhe backbone of prosperity. Though it is difficulr for us to understand our role in the midst of all rhese questions, answers and reasons. We are rhe stepping stones to the final desrinorion of progress, We are the youth who ask rodoy end who wiil answer tomorrow. 5 Waymwhwwmwwmwayh. .1. , V ,5. . The Reasons . . . 3 1 14 Freedom ment is the sobrCe of our great- srrength but it is that very strength Itho't imposes a great responSIbiliry on- the people; the responsibility to insure that rights are extended to every in- dividual no matter what his race, :prV'blood type As Students we are jUst beginning to realize our freedom to- test our wings to expohd Yet it is important to :reolize that the -. reSponsibility that comes with freedom is'ijustice; justice for the indiViduoi, justice for oil. The freedom is ours to rejoice in, ours to create in, ours to expand in. 16 Technology. Thor's whor it is all about, and our generation, has rhe rechnology to make olmosr onyrhing work. Amazing things can be accomplished rodoy yer much more is still left undone. A boboon's heart has been used to susroin life in 0 young child, and o mechanical one in on older man, yer we can do more. Maybe we can go beyond sustaining life and begin r0 prolong it, giving more people the chances they deserve. Maybe . . . There is more to the furure than simply technology, there is human W, Hi 5- knowledge. The age of machinery may be coming but with our minds we con creore 0nd esroblish rhe obiiiries of these new mechanisms. We, humans, alone have the obili- ry to create. We are not predes- tined, we have been roughr and thus con continue to reach. Todoy we are learning for romorrow. The srudenrs of the '80's have the copociry of being the reochers, scienrisrs, and doctors of the 90's. We con and will carry on. PMRPUemW Creating I The Future . . . L M M-W w .1 In alt; Diplomacy; Conspiracy Interaction and group activity are the backbone of today's society. H0wevet, clubs and organizations centered around the capitalistic ideois of competition and Hsurvivol of the fittest , can turn even the most innocent diplomacy into 0 plot and on act of conspiracy. Our good deeds and goals can become misguid- ed and we can lose sight of our volues. In governments, today even in our own democrocy, our values are being lost. The CIA. is training the Sondinistos in guerillo warfare and we are sending h'freedom fighters into Nicoroguo. Our governmental diplomacy is be- ing turned into plots, games and tactics to force our misguided views on others. Here, at Walnut Hills High, we have the oppor- tunity through interaction in clubs, ranging from bike clubs to problem solving clubs, from chess teams to Chinese club to shore our views, values and ideas. We, in o dip!omotic way can make the difference with our peers and even notions, without conspiring. Rem '85 - Rem '85 - Rem '85 - Rem '85 - Rem '85 - Rem '85- Rem '85 - T h e Staff? .5; 3. The idea of competition is 0 universal theme which is exemplified by the Olympic games held every four years. In preparation for such worldwide competition, be it psychological or physical, it is in high school where we learn the fundamentals of competition. At Walnut Hills, 0 wide variety of sports are of- fered ranging from football and basketball to lacrosse team and thumb wrestling. Whatever the athletic passion, sports represent 0 com- munication which sometimes can be 0 lock of, o misunderstanding of the rules, injury from illegal ploy, orjust basic poor sportsmanship. Some of the problems which we encounter ore communicative problems and are present among the leading notions of the world today. Problems which represent the difficulties people sometimes have relating to each other. This is where we learn, this is where we begin. We learn to ploy foir, we learn to be cool, we learn to compete, yet with on air of dignity and pride. f Cl. , R'WQ; ' :AMHH II 66 Football FootbolI 67 w - mum 68 Football Team members in alphabetical order: D. The eleven seniors, two of whom iTony Lewellyn and Don Stinsoni ore four-yeor Iettermen, bring their previ0us experience playing together and their strong leader- ship to 0 team that has, in the words of one player, . . Totally changed from lost year's team - for the better. The main emphasis for this year's team is on hitting: if you hit the boll, you win. The team's mojor strengths include the pitching of Don Stinson, Dove Brown, and Eric Seiber; the defense of Tony Lewellyn, Todd Taylor, and Garrett Kelly; and the overall experience, speed, and dedication of the team as 0 whole. Said Tony Lewellyn, We're going to surprise a lot of peoplejudging us by lost year's record. The baseball team, led by coptoins Tim Forrell, Tony Lewellyn, and Don Stinson, looks forward to a good season. Boys' Baseball 101 The Vorsiry Lody Eogles led by head coach Ms. Porrus, were young in age, but mature in talent. As we are only animals, this means of existence, upon onolysis, surely ap- peers for from perfection. However, to our inner intuitions, the method strikes on imperviously true note; Our democracy has gone ostroy and through the process those who should be gaining wili ultimotely lose. The ideals that were present in the writing of our c0nstitution have faded away. The greater example is in today's education. The educators - the teachers have been deterred from their course. The future of tomorrow have had obstacles thrown in their paths. The obstacles are the bureaucrats who in our society complicate simple goals and corrupt the process. Society needs to return to these fundamental ideas and recognize the importance of our educators. The future of the world is in our hands of the students for whom on example is set by the teachers; Bureaucracy must not get in the way e- 0 com- mitment must be mode to education without interference. In order to survive In 0 system such as ours, people relating to people is essential. In- terpersonal dynamics is the key that unlocks the door to real brotherhood and sisterhood. This total understanding of humanity comes only through the kn0wiedge gained from our diverse backgrounds because of this we can learn from each other and help each other. From the down of our effie years the growth of relating to people starts with the finding of so many different kinds of people in our environment. In this melting pot of peoples we acquire dlf- ferent values and individualities. From here, as we progress through the next six years of our education we find out more and more about others and ourselves. The relating must not stop here.
