Principal In conference with his faculty . . . Philip H. McDevitt . . . alone at his desk . . before the school. 16 with his family . . . Walnut Hills High School bas been ret apart . . . to concentrate its efforts to the end that it may offer a broad and tlaoronglv training, placing special enz- phaxir on intellectual developnient and .vcbola1'xlJip. This is the second time that these words have appeared in the REMEM- BRANCER. The Hrst was in 1920, when that year's edition of the Rmimrismxcrzk editorialized about the school's new status and special and stated purpose. This fact is a Erin tribute to the students and teachers who have preceded us hereg for, in our system of free public educa- tion, we cannot for long tolerate an idea which is unworthy or a practice which is ineffective. Through the years Walnut Hills students have demonstrated the worth of the idea and the effectiveness of the prectices which are combined here. In a very real sense every success- ful student in Walnut Hills helps to en- sure that a similar opportunity for suc- cess will be waiting for a student yet to come. To the graduating class of 1961 and to their seventeen hundred fellow students I offer this thought about the unusual learning experience which We share, and, in so-doing, invite you to share also in the gratitude l feel for being a part of it. PHILIP H. MCDEVITT

LUEDEKE Assistant Principal Assistant Principals Walnut Hills has fostered an intellec- tual sympathy among its students, which symbolizes the vigor and value of the Walnut Hills tradition. This tradition was born, in large part, as a result of the classical nature of the school. Holding to the dignified concerns of the past, it has been accepted that the finest type of scholarship is impossible if removed from the inspiration of the Greek and Roman masters. Familiarity with the conditions of ancient life enables us to place in prop- er perspective the failures and successes of our modern time. As a result of these contacts with the problems of man from ancient times to the present, the grad- uates of 1961 may join with those of previous years in the realization that they are well prepared to meet the ardu- ous demands soon to be placed upon them' MR. BROKAMP
