In 1893, Miss Charlotte Conant and Miss Florence Bigelow founded Walnut Hill School, a preparatory school for girls. The purpose of the school was to prepare young ladies for college and the roles they would be expected to jill in society. These roles have changed, so did Walnut Hill. The school has watched its graduates face a world in which women were expected to accept the roles of housewU'e and mother with little say in political or business matters, but now, after many years of slow change, women have eamed the right to speak The graduates of Walnut Hill now face a demanding world in which women are gradually, if reluctantly, being accepted as equals and therefore competing in every aspect of life. With this acceptance has come the need for a more diversified education. Walnut Hill has met this challenge by adapting its programs to the needs of its students. Walnut Hill offers not only preparation for college but a well- rounded education that teached us how to learn and live in our changing world lt is above all a community, teaching its students to accept responsibility for their actions. Since each student is encouraged to volunteer for a leadership role. Walnut Hill is helping to prepare girls as responsible leaders of tomorrow. The 1977 SUMMIT looks at Walnut Hill as a molder of contemporary young women. In shaping her students, the school endeavors to build upon each girl's individuality. Our look at Walnut Hill reveals not only what the school offers but how the student contributes. ,l.u..- ,., -'liaf5W2?q,. .ff - - f -' mfr-1.-- -.- ' ' X ,,':-f4YiQ.f'+'a- L 1 ' , V ' ,1fyiw1 . QQr is U I ..,, we ,I . Well, We finally made i X ,V ' class of 1977. It seemed like a lo oadg and at times we thought our A ld never arrive. H As we look back over our years at Waln Hill, we find the good times outweighed the bad. In our sophomore year we joined'-the freshman class at Canoby Lake ParlE'0ur junior year we took PSAT's and SATh, and then retreated to Wingasheek beach, and Rockport. Senior year brought more SAT's, and then a climb up Mt. Monadnock with our new Head Masterg Mr. Greene. After this, Who knows? Are we ready to enter as mature adults? Are we ready to forge a new world and bring a new gener- ation into being? We will never know until We try. Good Luck . . . 'Qtr-'WDQN
