“
In the following pages of this, the twenty-fifth volume of the Walnut Tree, we have attempted to record the memorable events we have experienced during the year 1960-61, In order to present this story in a more interesting manner, we have chosen the comic strip theme because many of the comic strip characters depict life as it really is and in a humorous fashion. We have tried to show all aspects of school life, both curricular and extra-curricular. We have earnestly attempted to record all of the events, and the organizations sponsoring these events, that have taken place this year. When in future years you should like to remember the year 1960-1961 perhaps this volume will help you. We, the Class of 1961, wish to dedicate this twenty-fifth anniversary volume of the Walnut Tree to Mr. Charles Vail. Mr. Vail has very ably served our class for four years as sponsor, and is our football and basketball coach. As we, the senior class, prepare to leave, we wish Mr. Vail continued success in whatever he may do. HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL The first Walnut School was built in 1875 and consisted of three departments -- primary, intermediate, and grammar, with 122 pupils enrolled and Mr. G. D. Paddicord as the Principal. In 1884, a high school was organized with only 10th and 11th grades; there was no graduating class until 1890. In 1894 a new six room building was built. The school year consisted of three terms instead of two semesters which we now have. Of the 215 students enrolled, only 33 were in high school. In 1900, the high school was organized into a four year high school. In 1914 the school building was enlarged and in 1922 a new high school building was built at a cost of $100, 000 under the guidance of the school board consisting of Louis Gonigam Sr. , George Westphd, G. W. Dahl, Howard Keig-win and S. W. Hopkins. The first principal was Mr. Charles Melton. In 1924 the new high school was recognized by the North Central Association and has never lost that distinction. In the beginning the Walnut District embraced only 3, 000 acres. Today it consists of 108.62 square miles with a taxable valuation of $17,737, 385. In 1890 the teaching staff consisted of two teachers, with an enrollment of 33. We now have twelve teachers and the enrollment this year is 169. Agriculture, Home Economics, a full athletic program, a complete music schedule, Drivers Training, and night classes in Typing and Spanish are all part of our curriculum. ANNUAL STAFF The Annual Staff meets regularly on Monday evenings during the school year for the purpose of working on the Walnut Tree. The members of the staff are monimated by the Senior Class, with the final appointments made by the faculty. It is the duty of this group to produce the Walnut Tree and raise sufficient funds through the sale of the book itself, the sale of advertisements, contributions of various school organizations and miscellaneous activities such as the sale of candy. The production of a yearbook involves much work, and the credit for this 1961 edition of the Walnut Tree goes to the below named Seniors who gave their time and effort for this annual. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY During the four years of our school life in Walnut High School, we have elected the following officers, listed in the order in which they held office: Presidents--Phyllis Von Holten, Jack Esmond, Carl Von Holten, Jack Esmond. Vice-Presidents--Karen Foss, Carl Von Holten, Paul Peach, Carl Von Holten. Secretary--Leona Jacobs, Karen Dalziel, Karen Foss, Bonnie Hardy. Treasurer--Phyllis Von Holten, Cecilia Plum. Representatives--Paul Peach, Tom Conley, Carl Von Holten, Jack Esmond, Jerry Lange, Ned Thompson, Phyllis Von Holten, Doug Page, Cecilia Plum, Jerry Bacorn, Bonnie Hardy. Senators--Karen Dalziel, Tom Conley, Jerry Lange. Sponsors--Mr. Vail (four years), Mrs. Yonk, Mr. Bruss, Mrs. Ewalt, Mr. Waterhouse, Mr. O'May. Our class entered high school with forty-two members, and during our second year we numbered only thirty-seven. At the beginning of our third year, we had dropped to thirty, but increased this to thirty-one in our fourth year. The class of '61 financed itself through the same channels as many classes before us: popcorn, candy and pop sales, the use of the milk machine franchise, magazine sales (in which our class set a school record), sock hops, our junior and senior prays, concessions at the Carnival, the sale of Christmas cards, and a bake sale. The money we earned was spent on our Junior Prom, the senior trip, the class gift to the school, and to finance the year book. We have been well represented in the band, choruses, football, basketball, baseball, and track teams as well as on the honor roll, the student council, and other organizations of our school. We will long remember our initiation into high school, the Junior-Senior Prom on which we worked so very hard, the nights of preparation for our junior and senior plays, the trips to music contests, the excitement of the football and basketball games, and finally, our senior trip. Yes! We are glad to graduate, and we do look forward to going out into the world and establishing a niche for ourselves, but we shall miss, and always remember, the thrill of being a student at dear old Walnut High! SENIOR PROPHESY Dear Mr. Vail: I was so glad to see you in the hotel in San Fransisco, the other day and to hear that you have retired from coaching and that you are now on your way to China as manager of the Globe Trotters. It was unfortunate that we did not have time for a longer visit because I had just come from Southern California where the Wingling Brothers circus is in winter quarters. Jack Esmond has become a famous ring master and most of our class is employed by this gaint circus. You remember Lynn Andersen? He has lost a lot of weight and now is a midget in the side show along with Bob Mattingly who is a knife thrower and who married Bonnie Hardy, the assistant to the trapeze artist Karen Dalziel. Karen used-to be pretty good on the trampoline at school. Karen Foss the French Kiss Barker, and Leona Jacobs, the bearded fat lady, have stands very near the pop corn concession, run by Debra Conklin. The most surprising and successful acts of the entire circus are those of Jerry Ba-corn. the Lion Tamer and Velma Clapp, the elephant trainer. No one ever expected to find them in these roles in a circus. Jerry Lange has become very famous as a juggler through the able help of his assistant, Gloria Lauritzen. The tall man, Douglas Page, has caused a little dissention in the circus because of his jealousy of Paul Peach, the fire-eater who is madely in love with the sword swallower, Cecilia Plum. This was told to me by Linda Sarver, who assists Cecilia Plum. Mary Wilson, who loved any kind of a dog, has a wonderful dog act in this circus and Karen Wells, the organ grinder, seems to cast a spell over the dogs as well as the monkeys in Phyllis Von Holten’s monkey act. In looking into the side shows, I was surprised to find Guy Henline as a thin man, Nancy Heitz-ler as a fortune teller, Jackie Headley as a muscle man, David Hoge as a cowboy-shooter, and Kay Lind as a star performer in the role of a snake charmer. Edna Mae Valt, the trapeze artist, shares the spotlight with Carl Von Holten, the bare-back rider. The individual acts of Dennis Hubbell and George H use man, who are the chief clowns, are hilarious. I was surprised to learn that John Fritz has a separate billing for his ballet act. Although I am the business manager for the circus. I really would like to have you visit our show before we go on the road. Sincerely, Randy Urich L. Burkey D. Buzard G. Bass L. Black JUNIOR G. Borop R. Christensen L. Cole The Class of 1962 has a fine three year history, which includes participation in all of the major activities of our school. We are, and have been, well represented in the band, choruses, athletic teams, school projects, such as Homecoming, and on the scholastic Honor Roll. We have enjoyed many class outings such as the G. B. H. trip. Our activity in music (Band, choruses, ensembles, festivals, contests, etc) has been most enjoyable. Our experience and training in dramatics (Senior play, skits, debates, etc) has been most profitable. Our participation in athletics (football, basketball, baseball, track and intra-mural sports) has, we feel, attributed much to the many victories of our school. Our representation on the Honor Roll and Honor Societies is a record to be proud of. All in all, we are proud of our record in the past three years and we intend to augment this record next year--our Senior year. CLASS ADVISORS -Mr. Bloyd - Miss Swanson, Mr. Shearburn, and A. BOY'S STATE Each year a boy from Walnut High School, and other high schools in the state is chosen to attend Boy’s State in Springfield for a week of activities, during which time the boys learn the workings of our state government. This year John R. Fritz was selected for this honor by the American Legion and sponsored by that organization. Two students are selected, each year, from our school, to be sent to music camp at Mc-Comb. 111. This year Phyllis Von Holten and Karen Foss were chosen and sponsored by the Junior Woman’s Club. Something wrong ACTIVITIES T' The 1960 Raider Homecoming started with a big yell at the Pep Rally, October 13. The cheerleaders led cheers around the blazing bonfire. Coach Vail and the senior boys gave encouraging speeches for the game the following night. Bob Mattingly started the group in a snake dance through the streets of Walnut. Friday afternoon at 2:45 the parade got under way. The High School Band led the parade with attendants and escorts in each class following. The individual classes presented a clever float but the Seniors were the cleverest of all by Worming Their Way to Victoria. ” The Blue Raiders caged those Wildcats with a victory of 18-7. Climax for the Homecoming was the dance Saturday night with the Norm Resor Band playing. The actual crowning of the Queen, Bonnie Hardy took place. The attendants were Phyllis Von Holten, Senior; Treva Buzzard, Junior; Janice Anderson, Sophomore; Linda Geredes, Freshman. During the intermission Karen Wells played Autumn Leaves on the piano. ASSEMBLY On Tuesday afternoon, October 18 we were delightfully entertained by Mr. Otto Schacht, singer, lecturer, and teacher. This program presented by Mr. Schacht and his wife was entirely different from most programs given before our assembly in that all types of songs were used and the lecture given with their songs, was most educational as well as entertaining. Although Mr. Schacht has been here before we certainly would welcome a return engagement. FIRST SEMESTERS TEST On January 12 and 13 the students of Walnut High School were madly studying for the tough test given by the nice teachers. The study hall was in the gym and tests were being taken in all the rooms of good old Walnut High School. HONOR SENIOR FOOTBALL BOYS PEP ASSEMBLY The day of the last football game, the students and cheerleaders honored the senior football boys. Mr. Vail gave us a pep talk and the pep band played songs dedicated to the football boys. Phyllis Von Holten and Bonnie Hardy received medals from Janice Wiggiam and Kathy Kepner for being senior cheerleaders. CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL The Christmas festivities at Walnut Community High School culminated in a vocal music program, given by ninety four members of our choruses, on the evening of Wednesday, December twenty-first. During the day, Christmas music was played over the intercom system, as the classes passed at the end of each period. In the afternoon, a special Christmas assembly was held. It was during this assembly, that each class presented a special number and community singing preceded our moving down to the gym. We then had gift exchange in the gym. Jolly old St. Nick who was Miss Swanson, presided over the gift exchange, and school was dismissed early. A full house welcomed our singers, at night, and a fine Christmas program was presented under the direction of Mr. C. H. O’May and narration of Mr. Jupin. Deanna Broers, at the console of the electric organ , and five anternating pianists, accompanied the very fine chorus. FOOTBALL BANQUET On November twenty-second, the Walnut football squad, the managers, the cheerleaders, the faculty, and the Board of Education were the honored guests of the mothers of the football players at a testimonial banquet held in the gym. Mr. S. A. LaRussa, our principal, served as Toast Master with Mrs. Pauline Von Holten representing the player's mothers, making the welcoming address. Jerry Bacorn gave the response in behalf of the players. After the meal Bob Mattingly and Carl Von Holten introduced next year’s Co-Captains. Miss Swanson introduced the Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders and awarded the 'W' letters. Then Mr. 'Stretch' Miller presented a talk on 'New concept of sports', imphasizing the important role the competitive sports play in preparing young men their roles in society. Mr. Miller's appearance was made possible by the Community Relations Department of the Peoria Journal Star. The menu for the delightful banquet was as follows: pineapple juice, pineapple orange salad, Milk or coffee. Fried chicken with mashed potatos. Buttered peas and carrot sticks, hot rolls, and pie. This meal and the program that followed was greatly enjoyed by everyone present. HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION It has been the custom in W. C. H. S. to induct new members into the honor societies, before a special assembly of the student body. This is an impressive ceremony at which time the newly elected members take the oath of the society and receive their pins from the older members. It is a special recognition meeting to give proper and deserved attention to those who have achieved special honors. AG. SHOP The agriculture department of the Walnut Community High School is housed in a separate building and is fully equipped to carry on all phases of instruction in this field. The shop is spacious and convenient. The shop work is geared to teach techniques necessary for repair and maintenance of all equipment necessary for farm work. F.F.A. FISHING TRIP The reward for faithful participation in F. F. A. activities during the school year, is a weeks fishing trip to the north woods. Two automobile loads of boys, with camping gear, left Walnut at noon on the day that school was out and drove to Wisconsin for this fun filled week of fishing, swimming, and boating. The weather was excellent for all types of activity, under the supervision of Mr. Wendell Phillips and Mr. Baxter. The boys did their own cooking and the specialty of the week was fish and seaweed salad. The award for most fish caught went to Jerry Ba-corn. The lucky boys who went on this trip were: Jerry Bacorn, Jerry Lange, Dale Kepner, Dean Geldean, Danny and David Hoge, Fred Schuneman, Bill Wiberg, Rick Wangelin, and Larry Durham. That evening we enjoyed a moonlight cruise down the Potomac. The next day we visited the White House, Smithsonian Institute, Arlington National Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Washington Monument, and the F. B. I. Wednesday we toured the Capitol seeing both houses in session. After this we left Washington D. C, and were off to New York. We arrived at night seeing New York's beautiful skyline from many miles away. In New York we saw the Statue of Liberty, Radio City Music Hall, the United Nations Building, and the Empire State Building. Later that evening we wearily boarded our bus for home with many wonderful sights to remember for the rest of our lives. MUSIC ACTIVITIES Each year, as me grass turns green and signs of spring begin to appear, Mr. O’May and his music department begin to come to life. At noon hour, you can hear ensembles practicing for contest, the choruses practicing harder than before, the band practicing its contest numbers. All of these foretell events to come: band, chorus, and ensemble contests, Blackhawk Band and Vocal Festivals and our own spring concert. In March our band attended the Band Festival, and the pictures on this page are of the mass band practicing for the evening performance. Then our group went to contests. W. C. H. S. returned from the District solo and ensemble contest with superior ratings for the trombone quartet, cornet trio, and sax trio. Excellent ratings were received by the clarinet quartet, horn quartet, flute trio, two brass sextets, two boys' vocal octets, two mixed octets. Good ratings were received by the drum quartet, mixed clarinet quartet, and two girls' octets. On May 6th our music students attended the State Contest in DeKalb and returned with superior ratings for brass quartet, cornet trio, and boys' chorus. Excellent ratings were awarded to saxaphone trio, trombone quartet, girls' chorus and mixed chorus. Good rating for band. SPRING MUSIC CONCERT On May 26, 1961, the Walnut High School Band, under the direction of Mr. C. H. O'May, put on their spring concert in the grade school auditorium. Many of the numbers played were from Broadway musicals, such as My Fair Lady and Sounds of Music. ” The horn quartet and a jazz band highlighted the program accompanied by the band, and some of the ensembles which went to contest played their numbers. The mem- bers of the band wish to thank Mr. O'May for his very able direction during the past year. JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM AND BANQUET On May 20, 1961, the Juniors were host to the seniors, faculty, and guests in the gym at their prom, Moonlight and Roses. The evening began with the banquet at 6:30. Dinner was served by the junior mothers who were dressed alike in pink dresses. The meal consisted of turkey and dressing, potatoes, various vegetables, and strawberry shortcake. After the banquet, several speeches were given, with Mr. Jupin as the featured speaker of the evening. At 8:30 the dancing began to a fine orchestra. It was an evening which all who attended will remember as one of the highpoints of their high school careers. ft O o 3
