We lived through the ordeal and found that rt was fun With the help of Miss Dufelmeier our advisor we chose to sell candy at the football and basketball games as our money making proyect for the year Our two large responsibilities were to prepare refreshments for the Homecoming Dance and to decorate the gym for the Valentine s Party The end of the year found us with little money but high hopes Our Sophomore year gave us confidence and we felt more at ease with the upperclassmen Adrian Magnuson led the class as President Mary Ann Schuneman was Vice President and Marilyn Foss was Secretary Treasurer M johnson was our advisor and we con enlarge our treasury even more we picked up corn Being the custom to put on a class assembly program we dressed as small children and re enacted 1 typical country schoolhouse Christmas party We decorated for the Homecoming Dance and prepared refreshments for th leap Year Dance We were then half way through high school and we knew the next two years would bring more and bigger responsibilities mrghr say perhaps that our unior year was the busiest for we no sooner finished one propect when we started another The capable leaders for this year were Bill Schmitt President Dolores Cerdes Vice Presl dent Yvonne Brandenburg Secretary Treasurer and Mr ohnson once again was our advisor We decided that milk is more healthful than candy so we replaced our candy machines with a refrigerator full of milk To start the year off right we put on a very successful play Taming the Brat under the direction of Nlrs Watson Next the class elected a Paper Staff which kept the students and parents well informed of the latest gossip and activities going on at school Then came time to select our class rings which we had been looking forward to since our Freshman year The class entertained the student body with an assembly program based upon the T V show Arthur Godfrey s Talent Scouts M ohnson acting as Arthur Godfrey Again we took part rn the annual dances furnishing entertain ment for the Homecoming Dance and refreshments for the St Patrrek s Dance The year was coming to a close and we elected our Annual Staff so they could get an early start in producing an outstanding Annual To climax the year the Seniors Faculty and Board of Education were guests of the juniors at the well planned unror Senior Banquet and Prom The gym was decorated as a penthouse roof and we dined and danced under a blue sky filled with many stars Before we realized it we were the Senrors of Walnut High lt was our turn to initiate the Freshmen and we tried our best to make it memorable l The class officers were Pat McCarthy President Nancy Gustafson Vice President Ann Kindt Secretary Dolores Gerdes Treasurer and Mr LaRussa Advisor Since this was the last y ar to raise money for our trip we worked harder than ever We sold sweatshirts pencils stationery orchids and had bake sales W also took part in the Mid Winter Carnival sponsored by program This ls Your Life about Mr Vail our basket ball coach At the Homecoming Dance we served refreshments and at the Sprlng Formal we provided entertainment The Seniors started a new precedent this year by having a Senior Dress Up Day and then the next day weanng our oldest clothes to school A the end of the year approached we became more busy There were weeks of practice for the Senior play Stranger In the Night directed by Mr Edsill Then there was the Prom which we enjoyed very much because the uniors had to do all the work Next was our class trip to Washington something we shall never forget Above all was the planning and excrtement of graduation Though our class is small we have excelled in sports music and scholarship We are ready and eager to go into the world and succeed in our highest ZmblIl0l'lS For this we wish to thank Mr Snider and the faculty the Board of lducatron and all our advisors who helped us so much s s I 1 t . . . , ,, . . , r. j . , . , . - - .. . , I- , , ' Y Y k 5 , o s 4 . - . , . Class N'ght This year the senior class tried to revive the custom of Class Night which had been discontinued for several years. We hope that everyone enjoyed this program and will continue to have them in the future. The mistress of ceremonies for the occasion was Nancy jo Gustafson. The first number on the program was a piano duet by Donna Mungor and Ann Kindt. The individual histories of each classmate were given by Gayle Gloden and Carolyn Hoffman. Carol Perkins read the class history. The senior band, under the direction of Adrian Magnuson, presented a humorous rendition of, 'Every Man for Himself. Following this the class will was given, with each senior bequeathing something to a member of the junior class. The entire class left something to each member of the faculty and the custodians. Pat McCarthy, senior class president, pre- sented the class key to the junior class president, George Norden. jimmie Gilchrist presented the class gift, a statue of the Greek God, Hermes, to Mr. Snider. The class prophecy was read by Yvonne Brandenburg and acted out by the entire class. As the closing number on the program, everybody joined in singing the high school song. Following the Class Night program, Ann Kindt entertained the entire senior class at her home. What a face, joan. I E. 1 2' 9 What's so funny, LeRoy? -me X just relaxing? Y iingqm 4 of Junior Class History In the fall of 1951 we, the forty-one members Of the C1855 Of '55, eagerly entered Walnut High School. Our first undertaking was, of course, initiation. After having stored away our shoe boxes and having disposed of our onions, we prepared to settle down and begin in earnest. We chose the following class officers' Presi- dent joe Waterhouse Vice President Phyllis Carpenter and Secretary Treasurer Nancy Andersen Our first proyect that really deter mined the depth of our treasury was selling magazine subscriptions Later our class was chosen to prepare the food for the Homecoming Dance In the spring we decorated the gym for the Leap Year Dance We were kept so busy that we had only one class party that year but everyone had an enyoyable time The following September our class again enter ed Walnut High this time eager to find out what the coming year held for a group of energetic Sophomores We proceeded to find out' Nancy Andersen was elected President Dennis Snider Vice President and Diane Wangelin Secretary Treasurer The first big responsibility w fly encountered that fall was decorating for the Homecoming Dance. Once again, in order to strengthen our treasury, we accepted the oppor- tunity to sell magazine subscriptions. Our class was in charge of the entertainment for the St. Patrick's Day Dance. In the spring we com- pleted our money-making projects with a very profitable bake sale As our second year of high school hastily came to a close we wonder ed what our junior year held in store for us The juniors began their third year at Walnut High by electing George Norden as President joe Waterhouse as Vice President and Phyllis Ohda as our Secretary Treasurer First we were responsible for entertainment at the Homecoming Dance Next we began our money making pro- jects which consisted of picking up corn two bake sales and the pop and candy concessions for most of the football and basketball games We had one class patty during the first semester The next four and one half months were spent primarily in planning for the prom As we finish ed our junior year we hopefully looked forward to graduation in 1955 P RISIDFNT George Norden SFCRETARY TREASURILR Phyllis Ohda f I , VICI' PRI SIDENT Joe Waterhouse 1 i ' Q s I I i . Under our advisor, Mr. Albert Augustson, we elected the following as Freshman officers: Marilyn Gallentine, Secretary-Treasurer Bob Von Holten, Vice-President Linda Wilson, President Though we didn't make much money, we had a lot of fun and a good start in our high school careers. In our Sophomore year we were privileged to have as our sponsor Mr. Charles Vail. His guiding hand helped to make our Sophomore year more of an economic success. We elected these officers at the beginning of the year: Carolyn Williams, Secretary-Treasurer joan Westman, Vice President Lois Von Holten, President Because of Lois's resignation just prior to the second semester, Linda Wilson was elected to complete the year. One of our largest projects was the sale of magazine subscriptions. JoAnn Peach was high salesman' and won a beautiful wrist- watch as her reward. In order to pad our class treasury even more, we decided to sponsor a camival. Because of the enormity of this undertaking, the other classes were allowed to participate and profit. Both the carnival and the accompanying talent show were a great success. We now 'rest on our laurels, awaiting our Junior year with eager anticipation. The class advisor is Mr. Edsill. Ned Waterhouse was elected President, johnBo1z,Vice-President: and Doris Sparrow, Secretary-Treasurer. Doris moved away during the year and Ann Etheridge has taken her job. The class project for the year is the popcorn machine. Their claim to fame on the basketball team was Ned Waterhouse who earned a letter. The Gonigam-Bass-Hill Company again spon- sored the freshman trip to Chicago. The fresh- men visited such places of interest as the Chicago airport, the International Harvester Plant, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the International Livestock Exposition. Each freshman wrote an essay on the trip and prizes were awarded by the Company. First prize was given to Joyce Norden, second, to Joyce Howes, and third, to june Bell. Also, to add to their treasury, the freshmen picked up corn and sponsored a bake sale. They did their partin the Homecoming Dance by clean- ing up. They decorated the gymnasium for the Spring Formal Dance. The freshman class has proved itself to be a part of the Walnut High School. Band Walnut High School now offers a wide and varied program in music. One of the more popular fields in music is our band. The in- strumentation of our band is one of the best in the Blackhawk Conference. Some of the various instruments include: oboe, bassoon, bass saxophone, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, and tympani. These are just a few of the in- struments which are infrequently found in a school our size. ln the fall, during the football season, the band concentrated on the phase of music that is necessary for this season. limphasis was placed on marching, formations and music that would be attractive to a football crowd. These are some of the formations that were drama- tized: Indian war scenes , 'Dragnc-t , various marching formations, and saluting the visiting team. During the year the band participates in vari- ous activities. We take part in the Delialb Homecoming parade and performance before the football game, band musicade, Blackhawk Hand Festival, contests, assemblies, lfduca- tion Week, and Memorial Day. The band now has a very extensive library consisting of various types of music. The following numbers are just a few in our reper- toire: Green Meadows , California Gold Centennial' 'Grand Festival' Tea for Two Y 7 7 'John Peal , High School faders , Ham- boogien, lfroica , and others, 'S '1 FRONT ROW: Glenda Ganschow, Norma Stone, Gayla Burkey, Lila Keleher, Marilyn Foss. Outside of activities in the organized band, many members take an active part in ensem- bles. Much credit is due these students as the majority of practice must be done outside of school hours. These ensembles participate in district and state contest. This year dis- trict contests were held at Marseilles. Those taking part in the district contest were as follows: lst state - Mixed Reed Ensemble, Marilyn Ifoss, Carol Perkins, -lohn Bolz, Norma Stone, Karol Caseyg Mixed Clarinet Quartet, john Bolz, Carolyn lloffman, Glenda Ganschow, llarold Birkeyg Trombone Quartet, Dennis inider, Cherrie Brandenburg, Gayle Gloden, Irene Perkinsg Cornet Solo, Brent Weddingg Blass Clarinet Solo, Carolyn Hoffman. lst- lflute Trio, Marilyn Foss, Lila lrieleher, Gayla Burkey. 2nd - Cornet Solo, Judy Myers, Bari- tone Solo, Phyllis Carpenterg Clarinet Trio, 'ludy Peach, Mary Lou Odell, Lou Ann Beach- lerg Brass Ensemble, Brent Wedding, Bill Ed- son, Dennis Snider, Carol Perkins, Phyllis Carpenter, Ramon Burkeyg Brass Ensemble, Judy Myers, Don Gustafson, Cherrie Branden- burg, Mona lleerts, Ronnie Burkey, Charles Kihiteg Saxophone Quartet, Ann Kindt, Nancy Gustafson, Judy Fink, Richard Lauritzen. On October 2, the first of three professionals put on their assembly. They were Zaney Blaney and Joyce, a magical act mixing comedy with tricks. U The Roamers appeared next on November 12. This group consisted of a baritone, a so- prano, and a pianist, all of whom performed individually and in duets. On March 26, Rever- end Powell and his wife showed a movie and articles of clothing from their trip through South America. The first organization to present an assembly was the Senior class, on january 16. Their program was 'This is Your Life , depicting the life of Chuck Vail. The next assembly was a Programs dramatization of Dragnet given by the juniors of February 6 A popular assembly was that presented by the speech class On March 5 they presented their one act play Life of the Party. The Sophomore assembly given March 19, was a sketch of the seniors as they pictured them twenty years from now. The last class to give an assembly was the Freshman class. On April 9 they presented 'Arthur Godfrey and His Friends . Other organizations giving assemblies during the year were the music depart- ment, the faculty, Pep Club, and G.A.A. On May 14, the Senior Play Cast presented a portion of their play, 'Stranger in the Night. The last assembly was, of course, the Closing Assembly held on the last day of school. At this assembly awards and report cards were handed out. The student assembly programs this year achieved much interest and were enjoyed by all. Noon Hour Program The noon hour program this year was set up to utilize all of the available space and equipment which was on hand. Mr. Reynolds was the super- vising faculty member on duty. The program was set up so that no equipment could be in use before 12:20, thus allowing ample time for the noon meal. When the weather didn't permit the students to go outside, the indoor activities were dancing on Tuesday and Thursday, basketball every day on the east end of the gym, and volley ball on the west end of the gym on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Some of the other noon hour activities were tumbling, boxing, wrestling, baseball, couch foot- ball, punching bag, and ping-pong. In order to create more interest in ping-pong, a tournament was held. This stimulated interest in the sport, not only among the students, but also among the faculty.. Many of the students were defeated by Mr. Vail, Mr. Edsill, and Mr. Reynolds. Every student had a chance to participate in the activi- ties and all participating enjoyed the varied and interesting activities of this year's noon hour program. i953 HOMECOMING A., ueen and her court Where 1s Adfldll? Four sections of health for boys and girls meet on Thursday and Friday of each week. The boys began their season learning the fundamen- tals of football. During most of the football season a competitive program of touch football and borden ball was enjoyed. During the remainder of the fall season the boys engaged in soccer and volleyball. Ira Kelly's 'Kannonballs' won the morning class lntramural Volley Ball Tournament. April 2 was the highlight for both P.E. groups, for this marked the date of the annual Gymboree program. The boys put on an exhibition of wrestling Cprofession- al, college, and midgetl, rope climbing, tumbling, diving, and work on the parallel and horizontal bars. Variety was added to the program by four crack drill teams led by Adrian Magnuson, Al Moffat, Bill Schmitt. and Dennis Snider. Other activities included in the P.E. program were: bowling, social dancing, track, softball, and baseball. All students are required to meet once a week in regular health classes. Included in the course, taught by Mr. Vail, were methods of first aid and artificial respiration, usage of medicines and drugs, major com- municable diseases, care of skin and teeth, and learn- ing the fundamentals of good health habits. All stu- dents enjoyed the lecture and film on Care of the Teeth' by our local dentist, Dr. Kindt. lg , ll .
