MR W P BlLLl FREDERICK l873 I946 I1 Ill s rl 1 I1 111111 I1 s 1111 T Xl 1 ll 111111 111111 1 1 1 11111111111 111 BILL IS GONE-Over ln Walnut Ill erlck who had dled suddenly one day short of reachmg the age of 73 vears B111 had operated a httle confectlonary and 1ce cream parlor 1n the commumty for 40 years In those 40 years B111 s only concesslon to modern progress had been to lnstall electrlc storage cablnets for h1s ICC cream Otherwlse B111 and hs place of busmess had never changed But B111 l1ked chlldren and young people really hked them and everyone hked B111 When Walnut got a new modern h1gh school w1th a good gym naslum and bxg athletlc fleld around 1920 B111 thought Walnut ought to have a football team and he Sald so He sa1d lt to everyone and repeatedly He d1dnt get much encouragement however from school off1c1als or tax payers The student body was too small and a football team was too expenslve they Sald After a lot of frultless agltatlon B111 flnally plnned down the oppos1t1on Just how many boys were avallable for foot ball .lust how much would It cost to put them on the f1eld'P The answer was about 15 boys to play and about S80 each to equlp them Well why d1dnt you say so a long tlme ago? asked B111 conservatlve B111 who had never spent an unnecessary nlckel on hlmself or h1S place of busmess You get the boys out I ll get the equxp ment And he d1d just that That fall Walnut put an elght man credltable showlng The boys loved play mg the game and the townspeople en Joyed watch1ng them B111 stayed 1n h1s one man store and d1spensed candy and 1ce cream but he told the team lf you w1n come up and have a treat on me 1ts all free They won a good many t1m8S Walnut soon went to 11 man football and Jolned the Blackhawk conference Walnut began to clxmb ln the league standmgs and last season flnxshed as runnerup to Wethersfleld Hlgh of near Kewanee Th1s season of course Walnut attamed the ultunate seven games played all Won and no opponent even crossed Wal nuts goal 11ne Seven t1mes the squad met at B1lls for the post game free treat and B111 got even more enjoy ment g1v1ng the treat than the boys d1d 1n gettlng lt because lt was a trlumph B111 had walted for more than 20 years to enjoy B111 knew now as he had long be heved that he had made no mlstake ln handlng out that handful of cash a b1g handful to equlp that flrst Walnut football squad May B111 Freder1ck rest ln peace and may th s of us vsho follow h1m havlng seen the wlsdom of hls lnvestment be eager and w1ll1ng to 1 lvest our cash and devote our tlme to Amerlcan youth .
