CLASS PROPHECY Durlng the wlnter of 1956 I had the opportumty to h1re someone capable and trustworthv enough to leave my respons1b1l1t1es to for a few weeks whxle I came to my home town of Walnut for a v1s1t I knew the g1rl I hlred to take my place durxng a slack perlod was xery responslble slnce she was a mem ber of the class of 46 Thxs g1rl the former Jeanne Anders n now Mrs Art Van de Clentenlo could manage my nursery for homeless chlldren dogs and other rodents very well For my other pos1t1on I found another sultable per son I flew up IH by B 29 a cross between a B 19 and a P 38 Upon my arrlval I landed at a beautlful alrport one ex ample of how my small home town had developed to a prosperlng c1ty 'lh1s alrport was managed by Jack Edmond son and h1s Wlfe the former Phylhs Johnson I started out after talklng to Jack a much stretched out Maln street I saw a large neon slgn flashmg Charlles Cafe to the publlc When I walked ln I could see Dals httle restaurant had surely changed I suppose to keep up w1th the town Then seelng a sharp mustached gentleman comlng to greet me 1 recognlzed hlm as Charles F1sher After talklng to hlm for a wh1le he asked lf Id l1ke to meet h1s Wlfe and chlef cook Upon my answer he walked to the rear and escorted someone forth whom I knew I should recognlze And why rot? At her greetlng w1th that old sm1l I recognlzed the former Carol Hatland That evenlng Charles was to be host to a group of gentlemen who had weekly banquets-the only tlme they had real food It was a group known as the Happy fob Bachelors ' Carol mformed me that LGUIS Alshouse and Nell Stlver were the two most responslble for organ 1z1ng that group so I llngered a few moments to talk to them I then declded 1 would go to the home of Mr and Mrs Laverne Johnson to see the former Phylhs McElvan1a There I found a group celebratlng Mac and La verne s elghth annlversary In the group were Bob Bolbock and hls beautlful blonde wlfe th former An1ta Cameron It seems Bob had a partnershlp 1n the All1s Chalmers buslness a prosperous deal he surely made After spendlng an emoyable evenmg lt was declded that on the morrow Mac Laverne Anlta and Bob would show me the town and tell me of the outcome of the remalnder of the class The next mornlng we started out and I can see one factor govern1ng the expanslon of Walnut and that IS the Gomgam Gonlgam and Gonlgam Comp any owned by George George Jr and George Sr respectlvely Next they polnted out the Glamarr School a glrl s college of wh1ch Harold Burkev IQ coach We then passed several new apartment bulldlngs pract1cally Emplre State bulldlngs wh1ch I was told were owned by Davld Cho1n1ere and his New York helress I then heard the sound of muslc and looklng around I saw the goodyman Who was It but Harry Olson r1d1ng along on h1s scooter callmg h1s wares to the pubhc Walnut surely has a beautlful bank to ltS credlt and the town can g1ve the former W1llda Vlckery now Mrs Oscar Berkshxre the credlt for attalnlng It For lf lt hadnt been for her wealthy clty fellow they wouldn t have a bank It seems the bank s mam contr1butor IS Mlldred W1ll1amS who owns a dude ranch south of town I would llked to have talked w1th her but the only t1me I got a glance at her was when she rode along s1ng1ng Im Just a dude cowglrl Ive got a lot to learn 1 1 1 K - Y Y 1 , . - 1 1 7 1 1 ' . , . 1 1 Y ' ' 7 , 1 1 ' ' - , . . , . n . rx I V 1 1 . e . . , . - . - K Y Y ' , 1 1 1 - I D.
