Basketball Playing without the services of one or more first stringers in 18 of 22 games, the Panthers failed to make an impressive record. However in the last four games they showed plenty of power. In the Tournament the boys lost a heartbreaker to Spring Creek. Be- cause of their outstanding performances in this game, Buddy Rector made first team All-Tournament and Bobby McClure the second team. During the season the leading scorers were Rector with 142 points in 20 games and McClure with 135 points in 15 games. The play of Chandler, Hollifield, Plemmons, and Captain Dockery was good during the season as well as in the Madison County Tournament. Eileen Thomas was the outstanding forward scoring 331 points with an average of 16 points a game. Mumps and flu hindered this years team by keeping forward Irene Thomas out of 8 games and Hester Chandler outof 2. Only two regular team members graduate this year, Mary Elsie Thomas and Irene Thomas. Others that graduate are Jean Allen and Mary V. Guthrie. The Madison County Tournament began Thursday, February 23, with the Walnut lass- ies taking an easy win over Hot Springs 40-28. Friday night saw the Pantherettes against a strong Mars Hill six who had a record of no loses. This game was ex- citing' from beginning to finish. At the end of first quarter the Wdlnut girls led ll-8. At the half time the score was 18-18 but Mars Hill proved too strong for the W. H. S, lassies, however the Pantherettes battled to hold last years title but were out fought 43-38. Eileen Thomas hit the loop for 20 points. The guards for Walnut also played an excellent ball game. This put Walnut' out of the tourn- ament but Saturdaynight saw Mary Elsie Thomas Qguardj and Eileen Thomas Kfor- wardj making the all-county team. Sportsmanship honors went to Irene Thomas who was given a basketball and 52.50 by Dr. W. A. Sams, thus closing the season. 33
