A G Q, s a ee., , V' wi Q7 he first of September 1949 found a group of willing but inex perienced students out for football Only three players had any pre- vious experience Before the season started the squad elected Guard Wesley Dockery as Captain and Quarterback Wallace Hollifield as 1 Alternate Captain By September 9 the men had been weeded from the boys O this date we met the Marshall eleven on the Island before a large crowd However the Tornado s experience gained a hard fought vic- tory 13 to 0 by scoring two touchdowns in the last half The second game of the season was played at Candler, a Buncom - County power. The Panthers fell under a 25 to 0 avalanche. In our third game we met another first year team. Sparked by Fullback Rector 'the Panthers won their first game over Fairview by the count of 18 to 13. Our next encounter was with Hot Springs, another County rival. 4 The more experienced Blue Devils defeated the Panthers 19 to 0. Our fifth game saw the Panthers meeting Marshall again. In a much disputed game the favored Marshall team was held to a 0 to 0 game. Our next game found the Panthers meeting Spruce Pine at Marshall The Panthers played one of their best games and trounced the Spruce Pine team 2.0 to 0. Two of the scores were chalked up by Halback McClure on brilliant runs of forty-five and fifty-five yards. Our seventh game found us traveling the longest distance of the year, about 90 miles to Bakersville. Here the Panthers found it hard to get started and lost Z6 to 6. In our eighth game we had a return game with Hot Springs at Marshall. In one of the hardest fought games of the season, the Blue Devils won 7 to 6. s On November 4, we met Black Mountain, Buncombe Qiamps and on of the powers of this section. This was the Panthers best game of the year despite a 40 to 14 loss. In this game we lost the services of our talented Fullback Rector. In our tenth game we met Fairview at Marshall. Although hard- pressed, we emerged on the long end of a. 12 to 7 count. On November 18, we closed our season at Oakley. It was a cold, windy night and the Panthers seemed never to get warm as they were trounced by a score of 39 to O. In this game we played without the services of five first stringers. X After the game the Oakley fans and players praised Walnut for thei fine play and great showing of sportsmanship.
