Soon after the Christmas season, several students began to prepare for the District Music Contesto Those who suffered through the many hours of practice in order to represent walnut were Priscilla Mikels, Preston Rinker, Mike McCauley, Marcia Myers, Dick McCauley, and Olivanne Landes. The first Band Banquet was held March 30, in honor of all band members. The presentation of band awards was initiated this year If all other requirements are met, a chenille letter with the inscription, BAED, is given, after four consecutive semesters in high school bandg a silver pin with two additional semestersg and a gold key with two more additional semesters. The pres- entation of these awards was made before the assembly. The instrumental and the vocal departments' combined efforts resulted in the presentation of several programs The first was the All-School Christmas program presented for the P.T.A. and featuring the mixed Chorus and Band. Next came the Spring Muscial. Following this was the County Music Festival in which the Band and Mixed Chorus participated. Then came Baccalaureate and Commencement at which the Band and Mixed Chorus, without the services of the Seniors, presented appropriate selections. This year the department loses eight Seniors. we have enjoyed having them with us and wish them success in the days ahead.

TM as if K Upon our return to the halls of Walnut Grove in September, it was found that the music room had not been dormant during the vacation period. The band had held practice sessions throughout the summer and had been preparing for the marching contest at the State Fair. Because of the untimely death of one of our members, we did not participate in the contest, however, we did per- form in the Farmers' Day Parade. Soon after the school routine was under way, the band accepted an invitation to lead the parade at the Lord's Acre Festival at Perkinsville. The band journeyed to Lafayette early in October to participate, along with some other eighty bands, in the first Annual Purdue Band Day. we also entered the Indiana High School Marching Contest held at Technical High School the following week In November the band was privileged to accept an invita- tion to march in the Delco-Remy parade in Anderson, cele brating the manufacture of their S0,000,000th car from General Motors. During the school year the band gave clever perform ances at all but one of the home basketball games. In- troduced this year for the first time was the use of yellow-colored lights on the hats of band members. Using these lights in various formations gave new and unusual effects. At the beginning of the year a Junior and a Begin- ning Band were organized. Later in the year the two were combined to form a larger Junior Band of twenty members. This plan has accemplished much as the former Jr. mem- bers now are leaders of the beginners. During this time the Mixed Chorus had not been idle Arlene Mosbaugh, Priscilla Mikels, Pat Perkins, Marcia Davis, Martha Hersberger, Mary Lou Overdorf, Phyllis Ka- kasuleff, Linda Carey, Jim Johnson, Nick Beith, Keith Schulenburg, wayne Schulenburg, Kenny Harvey, Larry Hunt er, and Charles King represented walnut Grove at the All State Chorus. These students, along with scores of other such teen-agers from over the state, presented a musical program for Teachers' Institute in the Coliseum. The morning of that day and part of the afternoon were spent in practice for the afternoon presentation.
