The band had held practice sessions throughout the summer and had been preparing for the marching contest at the State Fair. Because of the untimely death of one of our members, we did not participate in the contest, however, we did per- form in the Farmers' Day Parade. Soon after the school routine was under way, the band accepted an invitation to lead the parade at the Lord's Acre Festival at Perkinsville. The band journeyed to Lafayette early in October to participate, along with some other eighty bands, in the first Annual Purdue Band Day. we also entered the Indiana High School Marching Contest held at Technical High School the following week In November the band was privileged to accept an invita- tion to march in the Delco-Remy parade in Anderson, cele brating the manufacture of their S0,000,000th car from General Motors. During the school year the band gave clever perform ances at all but one of the home basketball games. In- troduced this year for the first time was the use of yellow-colored lights on the hats of band members. Using these lights in various formations gave new and unusual effects. At the beginning of the year a Junior and a Begin- ning Band were organized. Later in the year the two were combined to form a larger Junior Band of twenty members. This plan has accemplished much as the former Jr. mem- bers now are leaders of the beginners. During this time the Mixed Chorus had not been idle Arlene Mosbaugh, Priscilla Mikels, Pat Perkins, Marcia Davis, Martha Hersberger, Mary Lou Overdorf, Phyllis Ka- kasuleff, Linda Carey, Jim Johnson, Nick Beith, Keith Schulenburg, wayne Schulenburg, Kenny Harvey, Larry Hunt er, and Charles King represented walnut Grove at the All State Chorus. These students, along with scores of other such teen-agers from over the state, presented a musical program for Teachers' Institute in the Coliseum. The morning of that day and part of the afternoon were spent in practice for the afternoon presentation. Soon after the Christmas season, several students began to prepare for the District Music Contesto Those who suffered through the many hours of practice in order to represent walnut were Priscilla Mikels, Preston Rinker, Mike McCauley, Marcia Myers, Dick McCauley, and Olivanne Landes. The first Band Banquet was held March 30, in honor of all band members. The presentation of band awards was initiated this year If all other requirements are met, a chenille letter with the inscription, BAED, is given, after four consecutive semesters in high school bandg a silver pin with two additional semestersg and a gold key with two more additional semesters. The pres- entation of these awards was made before the assembly. The instrumental and the vocal departments' combined efforts resulted in the presentation of several programs The first was the All-School Christmas program presented for the P.T.A. and featuring the mixed Chorus and Band. Next came the Spring Muscial. Following this was the County Music Festival in which the Band and Mixed Chorus participated. Then came Baccalaureate and Commencement at which the Band and Mixed Chorus, without the services of the Seniors, presented appropriate selections. ' Mlilaaa Zitiaiargy When the first day of school began in that year, 1951-52, thirty-four ngreenn freshmen took their seats in the assembly. The customary freshmen initiation cere- monies were performed on September 20, with a party in our honor that evening. Now we had to begin to get down to work--and lots of it. The officers for the year were President, Paul Livelyg Vice President, Jerry Rulong Secretary, Marcia Davis, and Treasurer, Dick Mosbaugh. As our sponsors we chose Mr. Badgley and Mrs. Lamb. Our annual Christmas party, at which we exchanged gifts, was held December lh,in the Walnut cafeteria. On March 18 at the Elwood Roller Rink, the freshmen sponsored a skating party. we gave a special program in assembly, April 16. Remember the tree we planted? A class party was held at Shady Side Park in Anderson on May 7 to close the year. Our Sophomore year dawned with twenty-seven bright and shining faces. Those who had withdrawn during the year were Wayne Cady, Nancy Bousman, Pat Thompson, and Jesse McPhearson. The officers elected to serve for the year were: Beverley Johnson, Presidentg Bill Barnard, Vice Presidentg and Dick Mosbaugh, Secretary-Treasurer. This year we chose Mr. Badgley and Miss Reder as our sponsors. We started the year off with a customary nBack To Schoolu skating party, held at the new Alec rink. The most important battle of the year was deciding upon class sweaters. we finally chose cardinal red with white letters. The Christmas party and annual exchange of gifts was held December 23 at Arlene Mosbaugh's home. As our class trip of the year we journeyed to McCormick' Creek State Park. Twenty-two members enrolled in the Junior Class of l95h. Georgia Cruzan, Carl Tharp, and Bill Lacey with- drew at the beginning of the year. Again this year Mr. Badgley and Miss Reder were chosen class sponsors. Marcia Davis was elected President, Paul Lively, Vice President, Beverley Johnson, Secretaryg and Jim Johnson, Treasurer. On September 9 we began our huge magazine subscription campaign. At the end of the battle, a party for the winning team was given in the cafeteria followed by a theater party in Indianapolis. We again held the first skating party for the school year on September 22 at the Alec rink. We purchased our class rings in the fall and were very proud of them. The Christmas party was held at Marcia Davis' home on December 22. Our Junior Class play, nThe Brain Stormn was a large success, due to the hard work of the class members and director, Miss Reder. The sophomores were our guests on our trip to McCormick' Creek State Park. This is itl Today nineteen sophisticated Seniors strutted into Walnut Grove, For our sponsors we chose Mr. Badgley and Mrs. Stinebaugh. Officers for the year were: Jerry Rulon, Presidentj Beverley Johnson, Vice Presidentg Marcia Davis, Secretary, and Dick Mosbaugh, Treasurera On September 20, we initiated our freshmen properly into the way of high school, with a party in the evening We ordered our name cards and announcements from Herff Jones during the first few weeks of schools Porter's came to take pictures of the Seniors on September Zh, Our class play, nBrother Goosen was presented on October l9, The party after the play was held at Jerry Rulenfs heme. On October 29, the Seniors treated the Juniors to an informal party, as a result of the magazine sub- scription campaign. Marion House acted as host for our Christmas party on December 23. During one of our class meetings, we chose our class colors as red and white, our class flower as the red rose, and our class motto, HStraight is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life.n Being Seniors, one of our main jobs was to publish the school's year book. It was the first year book at Walnut Grove to be hard-backed, padded, and with a decorative liner. We worked very hard during our four years of high school to secure enough money to take our trip to Washington and New York. We left Indianapolis by train on April 2h and arrived back home on May l. Baccalaureate Services were held Sunday, May 8, 1955, with the Reverend John Atkins delivering the address, and the Reverend Elmer Bosworth assisting. Commencement was held on Friday, May l3, 1955. Our four class members delivering speeches were Paul Lively, Grant Carey, Gail Morgan, and Beverley Johnson. The Reverend Elliott Massey gave the invocation and benediction. On May lh, we, the fiftieth graduating class, were the honored guests at the Alumni Banquet. Perhaps you will meet some interesting characters, as we did. While waiting for clearance at New York's suspended airport, we found one of our old class members in charge of all supersonic travel. Marion House insisted we go with him to his home in the outskirts of town and have dinner with him and his wife, the former Marcia Davis. We were interested to learn that our own L23 Qgrson has been appearing regularly on Eddie Fisherfs Platter Party. Lou is hitting all the newspaper's gossip column features--she may become Eddie's fifth conquest. Leaving Skip's beautiful home, we took off toward far-away Ethiopia, the land of darkness and mystery. There in Addis Ababa, we saw a familiar sign--Barnard's Sales. Upon investigation, we discovered Red himself, Bill Barnard, selling, of all things, the new Crosley. Bill told us he was employing one of our friends, Fred Knapp, as his head mechanic. Does this mean an automo- bile repairman or a psychiatrist? Having heard of Paris--its beautiful buildings and fascinating women--we decided to stop, just to see for ourselves. It is not at all unusual to see posters ad- vertising American singers and dancers in foreign coun- tries. But when you see Sandra McClintick staring at you from a bill-board, that's something else. Sandra has kept in close contact with her girl- friend, 233 Murray. Pat is a stewardess on a ship that makes frequent cruises around the Mediterranean Sea. The captain of the ship is another one we know, Dick Mosbaugh. He is still under the influence of the Navy. Continuing on the trip, we headed north to the cold Arctic Circle. Below were several hundred dogs per- forming tricks in regular formations. Our curiosity was getting the best of us, so down we went. Charles King met us when we landed and brought some warmed blubber to nourish us. He told us of his new-found talent. He could train sled-dogs to do circus tricks and was making millions with Ringling Brothers Circus. India was our next destination, another land of mystery. It has been rumored that this country was be- coming known for its splendid motels. In desperate need of rest, we stopped at the first one we could spot. To our great surprise, we saw a familiar face--Larry Hunter Larry had established a fine chain of motels. To go along with his motels in all countries, he had a chain of sweethearts. Our next stop was Burma. Arlene Mosbaugh welcomed us into her neat little hut where she lived while com- pleting her missionary work. She told us of her plans to marry a rich Rangoon merchant and showed us her en- gagement ring made of monkey's claws. While refueling at the Philippines we snacked and read a local newspaper. The big news of the day was the opening of a new hospital on the island. Wilma Perkins was being installed as the head nurse at the hospital. Skimming over the ocean, we began to think of the United States and our next visit, Hollywood. The big thrill of the moment is a new-comer from the Mid-West, Beverley Johnson. Do you remember that Beverley always felt inferior because she looked so young and innocent? In Hollywood she is acting in roles of elderly women and widows. She is currently co-starring in a movie of Lassie's, but it looks as if her manager Jerry Rulon has bigger and better possibilities in view. We hopped over to the Salt Flats surrounding Salt Lake City and viewed the small truck farming. Here Vonda Hunter waved at us, so we stopped. Vonda, a farmer at heart, was trying her hand at raising hybrid sweet potatoes. She gets very disgusted though, because the race cars are constantly running through her gardens and destroying her plants. Near Denver we found Gail Morgan with gold dust in his hair and on his hands. He has controlling interest in a large mint, but he refused to give any samples, even to old friends. In Texas everything is big. Here was Paul Lively, still wearing his big boots. Paul had purchased one of the largest ranches in the entire state. He was doing a thriving .business because he could make his cattle be- have just by snapping his fingers. He was also a success in the rodeos. Oakridge, Tennessee has been an important key- location for several years since Grant Carey took charge of the Atomic Energy Match Company. His ideas have been exploding sky-high! Water-minded Qim Johnggg was in the sunny state of Florida, giving free ski lessons. We decided to enroll in the class, but Jim turned us down. He is accepting only female students, of his own picking. The Alumni Banquet is in commem- oration of the first and the fiftieth graduating classes of Walnut Grove. During the fifty-one years Walnut has been an organized high school, about 850 students have received their diplomas. A very large percentage of graduates have attended colleges and universitiesi This year, for example, at least seven out of nineteen class members are enrolled in a college or university. Laura Jack Eller, Roy V. Copple, Cleve McCarty, Charles Parker, Earl Parker, Fred O. Bray, and Jessie of the first graduating class of was H. A, Whiteneck. McCarty were members 1905. Their teacher Members of the Barnard, Grant Care House, Vonda Hunter, Johnson, Charles Ki graduating class of 1955 are Bill y, Lou Carson, Marcia Davis, Marion Larry Hunter, Beverley Johnson, Jim ng, Fred Knapp, Paul Lively, Sandra McClintick, Gail Morgan, Arlene Mosbaugh, Dick Mosbaugh, Pat Murray, Wilma Perkins, and Jerry Rulon. The history of Walnut dates back to the 1860's when during the trusteeship of Joseph Peck, there was a great demand for a school house in the vicinity of what is new Walnut Grove, In 1869, a frame building, costing six hundred dol- lars, was erected at Walnut Grove by Joseph Orth, con- tractor. The land was donated by Harlin Hobbs, who was elected the director. He selected the name of Walnut Grove because of the grove of Walnut trees located there This school building was used for 33 years. Later, John Newby gave two acres of land, and in 1903 an up-to-date brick structure was erected under the trusteeship of F. H. Tescher. The regular season was completed with a record of 13 wins and 8 losses. The victories were over Jackson Central twice, Frankton, Carmel, Prairie Township, Wind fall, Maxwell, Westfield, Jefferson Township, Sharps- ville, Deaf School, Markleville, and Whitestown. Losses were at the hands of Western of Kokomo, Dover, Waldron, Fishers, St. Marys of Anderson, Fortville, and Sheridan twice. Two of these losses were overtimes. In both the county and sectional, the Wolves were defeated by Sheridan, the eventual winner. In the coun- ty tourncy, it was an overtime loss to the Blackhawks, and in the sectional, it was an eight point loss after the Wolves had led at the half and mid-way through the third quarter. The Sheridan Blackhawks were finally eli- miniatcd by Fort Wayne North in the Semi-Finals of the State Tournef, The 195K-55 schedule was the toughest schedule in the school's history and the boys are to be commended for a job well done. The Walnut HBM team finished the year with 15 wins and 3 losses for an outstanding season. Reese House and Kenny Harvey worked hard during the year keeping the equipment in order as student managersp Our yell leaders were Ann Nance, Marina Davis, and Dennis Knapp. They are to be congratulated for an out- standing job, along with Miss Thornburg and the Boosters Club, ' ing ---- BASEBALL 1951+-55 -- During the year l95h-S5 the Wolves played baseball during the spring, summer, and fall. The record for the entire year was 22 wins and 9 losses. This was the first year that Walnut became a member of the Tri-County League, which included eight teams from Hamilton, Hancock, and Madison counties, The teams participating were Carmel, Westfield, Walnut, Lapel, Ht. Comfort, Wilkinson, Fortville, and Narklevilles The Wolves failed to lose a game to a Tamilton coun ty team, defeating Carmel and Noblesville three times and Westfield twice. The Wolves also defeated Elwood two out of three games played. The pitchers were Dick Mosbaugh, Marion House, Nick Reith, Larry Kaiser, and Preston Rinker. Other members of the team were Bill Barnard, Paul Lively, Kevin Mos- baugh, Tom Tharp, Bob Gordon, Ted Wilhoit, Larry King, Dick Webb, Gene Dent, and Dick Leach. --- TRACK 1954-55 --- For the first time in several years Walnut partici- pated in track. Meets were scheduled with Frankton, El- wood, Jefferson Township, Waldron, Noblesville, and a triangular meet with Carmel and Noblesville. A great deal of interest was shown as twenty-three boys came out for the sport. The boys did an outstanding job for the first year, and it is hoped that with more experience, Walnut will again be a contender in track in Hamilton County Following is a list of boys who participated: Dick Mosbaugh, Charles King, Paul Lively, Marion Kaiser, Nick Reith, Kevin Nosbaugh, Kenny Tharp, Ted Wilhoit, Bob Gordon, Larry King, House, Larry Harvey, Tom Bill Haworth Keith Bowers, Wayne Schulenburg, Keith Schulenburg, Dick Webb, Gene Dent, Jack Dent, Don Delaplane, Dennis Ryan, Dennis Overdorf, and Dick Leach. ---- JUNIOR HIGH SPORTS l954-55 ---- The 1954-55 Junior High basketball team, with its coach Don Boze, had another fine season,winning l4 games and losing 5. The little Wolves were defeated in the championship game of the Lapel Invitational Tourney by Sheridan. Dale Caylor received the sportsmanship award for the tourney For the second straight year J. W.
