The building in the back- ground was one of the many institutions in and arotmd Wahiut Cove. ' I NINETEEN HUNDRED TEN The students now ob- tain their education through improved facili- ties brought about by 50 years of progress. NINETEEN HUNDRED SIXTY iv 4' ,,...........- i , .. FIFTY YEARS OF PROGRESS Long before the dawn of tax- supported public schools, those who de- sired an education for their children either had to employ private in- structors or pay their youngster's tuition in a private school. Many of our prominent townspeople received their education in pri- vate schools established in Walnut Cove before 1900. Some of these people attended a school in the old Stokesburg Methodist Church which stood prior to the present church building and another church which burned in 1906, and others studied foreign languages, algebra, geometry and English in the old Walnut Cove Academy which stood on the hill behind Steve's Drug Store. The Academy sessions were only six months long, and those who wished eight months instruction had to pay extra fees. The Academy burned in 1922, having been unused for many years prior to that time. Around 1910 a high school building was constructed next to the Primitive Baptist Church on High Street. Out-of-town people arranged for their children to board in Walnut Cove homes so that the children might attend school. Walnut Cove High School became an accredited school in 1922. Since then many small school districts-- Fulp, Rosebud, Meadows, Danbury High School, and others--have been consolidated with Walnut Cove. In 1922 a new brick building was erected on High Street for the high school, and the elementary school remained in the old wooden structure next to the Church. A home economics department was added to the high school at this time. Around 1930 a gymnasium was constructed behind the high school building. Basketball teams which were treated with respect and awe throughout North Carolina were trained in this gymnasium. The struc- ture burned in 1940, and since then the auditorium of the old high school building--and now the old elementary building--has served as a Gymnasium. Mr. R. M. Green became principal of Walnut Cove School in 19 38, and served in this capacity until he became Superintendent of Stokes County Schools in 1947. During these years a department of Vocational Agri- culture was added, the old frame structure next to the Primitive Baptist Church was condemned, some of the elementary grade were taught in the Missionary Baptist, and the present high school building was completed in 1942. The old high school building on High Street then became the Walnut Cove Elementary School. Mr. R. G. Thomas, who became principal in 1947, has witnessed and played an important part in the continued growth of Walnut Cove School. Anew agriculture building, anew Junior High building, a new elementary school, and a spacious, beautiful stadium, have all been added to make Walnut Cove School the modern educational plant that it is today. The school now has 32 teachers-one of which is director of the band and glee club--and 924 students. It offers a variety of academic and vocational subjects andawell-balanced recreational and extra-curricular program which should appeal to the interest of every boy and girl. 3 -.f:'fi'5 'f' .5 sf. Along with homework, we had club meetings, all kinds of sports events, and the numerous other activities that make any teenager's high school day complete. Inthe classroom we learned how historic events effected our lives today, how to better express ourselves through speaking and writing, the latest in science and mathematics and we gathered certain basic skills through our shop and home economics classes. Extra curricular activities also play an important role in our education. Whether we actually participated in games or just observed them, the athletic program helped us to learn the qualities of good leadership. Above all, however, we learned the importance of getting along with others. Naturally we made mistakes but we profited by them, rather than be defeated and dis- couraged. We came to realize both the happy and sad times of growing up . High School provided us with many valuable friendships and fond memories which we will cherish in the future years. The many events of this past year recorded on the paper of this yearbook will always serve as a reminder of the things we learned. F 'AB-A, 1' 'Q' XJ' DEDICATED TO MR. JOHN H. NEAL DEDICATIGN We, the staff of the 1961 Wildcat, wish to show our appreciation to a man who has served on the local school board for the past 50 years. He has at all time had the best in- terest of the school at heart. Not only has he devoted his time and in- terest to p ub l i c school education, but has passed this interest to his chil- dren. Four of his eight children are now in the teaching profession. Capable, fair, and reasonable- he sets for us all and example of right-living. Because of our sincere admiration and respect for him as a leader in education, his service to us at Walnut Cove School, his love for his fellow man and his faith as a Christian gen- tleman, we, the 1961 Wildcat Staff, sincerely dedicate this yearbook to Mr. John H. Neal. In these days of outer-space rockets and proposed moon- trip s, science has been stressed in our school. The scene above shows Jimmy and John deeply engrossed with the experiment they are Work- ing on in physics class. Fine Arts are also being stressed in our classrooms. Each student, particularly the college preparatory students, is being urged to take two years of a foreign language. This a typical foreign language scene at the right. QUALITY 1960-61 saw many changes in the concept of what the schools should be striving for, and as a result of studies by the State Board of Education, extra- cur- ricula activities were held to a minimum. The faculty and administrators of Walnut Cove High School have stressed quality education through improved classroom instruction. Absentees from classes were at an absolute minimum--we soon learned to hold our var- ious club meetings and play practices o ut s i d e of regular classroom periods, and to de- vote our entire attention to the subject matter. Ou r library was used more extensively than before for most of us supple- mented our textbooks with out- side readings. EDUCATION Quality education has brought about many new things such as the T.V. classes. We cannow enrollin either general science or history on television CWhat would the class of 1910 have said about such?J. You kept repeating the phrase as if it held some magic in it. It hardly seemed possible that three years had faded into memories, and this was your last year at W.C.H.S. Little things took on special significance, each event became a memorable occasion, and things before un- heeded were laughable and lovable. New friends be- came dear, old ones dearer. You attended each event with that key phrase, This is the last ----- The last pep rally, and homecoming, the last class play, the last senior trip and parties with your favorite friends. You wanted each one to be the best for it was your last. You joined in with enthusiam at all the long awaited senior activities , senior parties, work a day, skip a day. Suddenly before you realized, May had arrived and your last year had come to a close. As the activities ofthe prom, and the baccalaureate slipped into the past, commencement was at last upon you. You were ready for that all important, final step out of the halls of W.C.H.S. Here's to you , the seniors and important part of your Alma Mater, Walnut Cove High School. , -4 J. 1 4 A A X xg ' 1 N I ' I 1 r ' 'I' 1 ff f 11 -.ix Newman dia, , as-4. rw us.. 3,2 Q 3 SENIOR OFFICERS + 1 1 1 X 1 F 1 t 4 E 1 1 t i Leftto Right - Jane George, Secretaryg Pete Poindexter, Presidentg Tamara B1a.1ock,Vice-Presidentg Dean Priddy, Treasurer. CLASS HISTQRY In the beginning we were FRESHMEN. Eighty-four proud students entered high school in the fall of 1957. We were the largest class to enter in many years. The confusion of changing classes was new, ex- citing and also fun. Our homeroom teachers were Mr. Beck and Mr. Leonard, who were as new to the high school as we were. Our more athletic classmates entered into sports activities at once. For years they had looked forward to being on that all important High School Team . We also strived hard to make that good impression on the rest of the high school. Then we received our final reports declaring us SOPHOMORES. Then we began to pretend we knew it all. No longer were we the lowly Fresh- man . We felt we were old hands at changing classes. Now we began to take part in more of the social activities. We joined all the clubs we could and began working to be accepted in honor societies. Our teachers this year were Mrs. Bailey and Mr. Nelson, We felt that our achievements had been great, yet we knew we had much more to achieve. Then with the end in sight we worked a little harder as J UNIORS. Whata wonderful and busy year. Our helpful advisors were Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Middleton. The Halloween Carnival proved to be the best yet. The next big junior event was the Junior Play. The suspense in waiting to know who got the parts and then, practice, practice, practice. Mother wasa Freshmen turned out to be ahuge success, and our so called critics raved. How can we ever forget that exciting day when we marched to the library to be measured for our rings. In March came the biggest thrill yet, our long awaited Junior and Senior trip to Williamsburg and Washing- ton, and all the work it took to get us there. Some of us remember that day in assembly when Junior Marshals were annotmced. What a thrill! At last May came and we honored the Seniors with a prom. Now as we looked forward to being Seniors we realized there would be more hard- ships and more happiness. At last we reached the thoughful hesitancy of SENIORS. First we elected our honorable Senior Officers. Next we received those long await- ed class rings. Everyone was so proud to hold out that third finger. At homecoming we honored our Senior football players who did so much to make our team a winning team. The Homecoming Queen was also an honorable Senior. We also were very proud of our Senior basketball players who put us at the top for the first time in a long time. Our next duties were to choose our mascots, colors, flower, and motto. As our motto we chose With the ropes of the past we'll ring the bells of the future. We, the graduating class of 1961, hope we will do just that, for the fine school of which we are so proud. Our capable leaders this year were Mrs. Greene and Mr. Satterfield. Now as graduation draws near and parting of our ways comes, we close the vivid memories of our school years. We pay our solemn respects to our teachers, principal, superin- tendent, and parents, who have guided and influenced as well as taught us along the way. All of us will be going out into the world to seek our fortunes. We know not the future but we can rest assured in Him who holds our future in His hands. Class Historian Anne Wright 38 .A' t, 4 .. HCTIVITIES ORGANIZATIONS Working on your behalf the organi- zations are perhaps one of the most im- portant phases of your year--Student Council, the publications, clubs, and the music groups make up the organizations. By electing Student Council officers in the spring and homeroom representa- tives in the fall, you have a voice in the government of W.C.H.S. Whether plan- ning the year's activities or represent- ing you to the faculty and administration, the Student Council seeks to keep your interest first. The m u s ic groups practiced long hours perfecting their skill to perform for you at assemblies and concerts. The band added zest and sparkle to the Home- coming Parade and provided entertain- ing h a l f - t i m e shows during football season. The band participated in many Christmas Parades throughout P ie d - mont North Carolina. The band has been your representative. The school newspaper keeps you in- formed on school news and records and protrays the events of your school year. Each organization worked hard this year, displaying a n otable record of service. They have been your ambassa- dors reflecting you throughout the com- munity and state. 1 c f 'Q - . 1 52 Qs sf, UI .fi fi! fffz . This was the constant cry of the Walnut Cove cheerleaders throughout our 1960 football season in which our boys were sparked to the Stokes- Rockingham Conference Champ- ionship. It remained our cry through the 1960-61 basketball season. Our team had maintained top position in the Stokes Conference Lmtil mid-January. During the entire season, the Walnut Cove fans increasing enthusiasm in the activity of our teams. In the high school, the stu- dent body gave a great response to the many events, such as pep rallies, bon fir e s , purple-gold days, and victory dances--all designed to bring about a better Lmderstanding of good sportsman- ship, and a highe r regain for school spirit, which is essential in the better- ment of various sports activities. Last, but not leastinthe parade of high school sports events, is baseball. During the previous seasons, we experienced fine ball club, but on the optimistic side we believe this year will be the best yet, of the Walnut Cove baseball team. In summarizing, we find that our various ball clubs have, and will continue to have the highest regard for good sportsmanship and will always strive to do their best for their ball club and for their school. ,N l.K1 ' ' 5730. . mf. 1' ui in 54 9 f N .x Ji w 'UC X A X, U. f .
