Our Hearts Were Young cmd Gay, a wonderful comedy about the gay Twenties, was the selection of the drama group for their December, l953 production. Two college girls, Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough, enroute to Europe dur- ing a summer vacation, eager to seem sophisticated, have a series of adventures and misadventures which kept the audience hilariously happy. Preceding the tea, which is served in a lunchroom transformed by seasonal flowers and bright with can- dles, a program is presented in the assembly hall. Choral numbers, a speech of wel- come from the class presi- dent, and a greeting from the principal are all features of this program. The part most eagerly watched for, however, is the one-act play which is always presented. The play put on in Octo- ber, 1953, was called Itchin' to Get Hitched. Seen in im- portant roles were Donna McNee, Donna Barnard, Rob- ert Hogan, Theresa Koller, Richard Schneider, Marilyn Repp, Clara Bensinger, and Geraldine Farina. Agnes Engel and Robert Yeisley were assistant direc- tors. Mr. Karimer was in charge. Amada Morales took care of property and scenery. l t Weaaage fo flue gzracluaiea i Each of you graduates inherits the opportunity of citizenship in its most fundamental meaning: a job, a career in industry, commerce, or the professions, and for each of you, your part as a competent home- maker. Your four hapDY, Successful years at Waller High School have helped to establish in you enduring qualities for success: success measured by good Work habits, sound character, and ability to get along with people. The greatest single hazard you face after leav- ing high school is the idea that the easy Way of earning a living is the best and right way. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Research has proven that every graduate is a successful candi- date for a job, a career in industry, commerce, the professions, and home-making, in proportion to his preparation for, and acceptance of, responsibility. The so-called easy Way of making progress, in the long run, proves to be the hard way to learn about life. Parents, teachers, and community lead- ers find their hardest job is to give you the vision, experience, and confidence to accept your hard- earned knowledge of the facts of life as a guide on your journey forward. The price of progress is faith and Work. The penalty of unearned privilege is loss of opportun- ities in American Citizenship. There is no short or easy Way from Earth to Heaven, but the passport to Heaven on Earth includes Courtesy, Depend- bility, Leadership and Service. The annual affair is marked by the election of a homecoming queen, the renewal of old friendships among graduates of Waller and North Division, and the raising of funds for scholarships to deserving seniors. There are usually two scholarships given each year, a cash award and a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to the University of lllinois. These awards are made on the basis of need, charac- ter, scholarship, and school service. This year, cash awards were given to Donna Barnard and Irene Weil of the February class. Harold Batman of the Iune '53 class was awarded the four-year U. of I. scholarship, and Norton Jacobs, of the same class, was given a two-year scholarship. Sought as eagerly as a scholarship is the title of Waller-North Division Homecoming Queen. Each fall, division rooms send representatives into a preliminary contest which decides who will enter the finals. The finalists, usually be- tween four and eight in number, are present at the homecoming dance, and alumni and students then vote for the queen. Gail Bippel is the l953-54 winner. Gail headed the impressive coronation ceremonies and received a large bouquet of roses and a silver trophy. These are not the only activities of the Asso- ciation, however. ln the past, the Waller Alumni issued a bulletin called the Alumni News to servicemen away from home so that they could keep abreast of the latest neighborhood and school news. The honor roll of those who gave their lives in the war was erected by the alumni. Membership in the organization is 'open to any graduate of Waller or North Division, as Waller was called prior to 1900. Members take part in meetings held the first Friday of every month, attend the annual hornecornings and quinquennial banquets, and are eligible for posi- tions on the Board of Directors and thereby can- didates for offices. Dues for the Waller Alumni are one dollar per year or ten dollars for a life membership. Every graduate receives his first year's member- ship free. Assemblies, parties, drives, are not complete Without a representa- tion from one or more of the music organizations here. Mr. David Karolius conducts the Mixed Chorus and a Girls' Chorus, as Well as the Robed Choir. Mr. Bruno Zabinsky conducts the Girls' Symphon- ic Chorus. Mr. lames B. Vandsburger conducts a band and an orchestra, in- cluding a uniformed band which per- forms at athletic and ROTC functions. Two concerts each year are put on by these groups, and are a popular attraction for the Waller neighborhood and community, as well as for Waller pupils and parents. The language groups, too, raise their voices in song frequently, in melodies native to the country whose language they are studying. A traditional pub- lic appearance for these foreign-lang- uage choristers is their carolling through W'aller's corridors a day or two before the Christmas holidays. 'Ullief in .fdcfion , l The lune l954 graduates carl ried out their 4A class elections according to their own plans, as a new step in student con- trol. They set up their own qualifications for candidates for office, assisted by the Civics teacher. Honesty, dependabil- ity, Willingness to accept re-, sponsibility, and a good schol- astic record were the traits they decided were desirable in their prospective officers. The election was carried on like local, state and national elections, insofar as that Was' possible. The practice of self-govern- ment is found at Waller in the Student Council, in all class organizations, and in the social rooms. Students in the lunch- rooms are encouraged to gov- ern themselves at all times in a manner suitable for any group gathering where the com- fort of others must be consid- ered. We realize that consid- eration for our neighbors is no dampener on enjoyment, and this lunchroom scene indicates as much. Practical experience is gain- ed in the commercial classes at Waller, where class mem- bers are often given the oppor- tunity to do work for the school. The intent young ladies in this scene would be an aid as Well as an ornament to any office. Activities, many and varied, in the classroom and out, form an important part of the Waller school program. ln the typing classes, for ex- ample, the pupils engage in many office-training activities. They learn to type With speed and accuracy. Special assign- ments such as typing scripts for drama are frequently turned over to these girls. The typing rooms are equipped with good machines, which are kept in careful repair. Waller's art classes, too, pro- vide a background for varied activities. Students enjoy out- door sketching trips, experi- ments in colors, and soap and potato sculpture. The jewelry, Christmas cards, and Christmas wrappings which are sold here before the holidays, are popu- lar with the entire school. One of the most charming of foreign Christmas customs is the breaking of the pinata. The custom has been transplanted to Waller and is a feature of the Christmas party enjoyed by Spanish students here. The pinata, a huge ball of papier mache' suspended high over the heads of the guests, is broken to shower down candy and gifts. 'MAI erin .fdcfion Waller's Student Council is an important part ot the school life here, Every division in the school elects a representative each semester who takes care of that divisions interests in the Council and reports back to the division room whatever business has been carried on at the various Council meet- ings. 'Every regularly enrolled student at Waller is a member ot the Waller Student Associa- tion, ot which the Council is a part. During l954, the Student Council sponsored Senn-Waller Day, collected iunds which made possible contributions to such organizations as the School Childrens Aid and the American Red Cross, conducted a Spring Carnival, purchased a camera tor school use, sup- ported and encouraged all school activities, and provided representatives for collecting the Student Pee. 6X3.LZB X V' , is x 1 Z , if 2 , E! 45 1 si' if 'IXMJW .xdcfion PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT METHODS lnstructor: Znd Lt. Boys' and girls' classes both play basketball and baseball through late winter and spring. ln the fall the girls play volleyball. Swimming is enjoyed throughout the year by both boys and girls. Volleyball and baseball are the two most popular girls' sports. At the end of the spring and fall semesters the girls have tournaments, with the winners receiving the title of school champions and the privilege of wearing gold baseball and volleyball pins. ln the swimming classes, the girls who pass their swim- ming tests are identified by red tank suits and are not required to take swimming when they become seniors. Calisthenics is well-liked by the girls, tooy it's good for removing extra pounds. Boys seem to like basketball as an intramural sport, with swimming running it a close second. One of the most popu- lar sports events of the year was the senior basketball game, 4B's against 4A's. Many expect this game to become an an- nual event. Water polo is a favorite, too, and classes challenge other classes throughout the year. Mr. Chappel, Mr. Kipp, Mr. Rohter, Miss Dixon, Miss May- bury, and Miss Coddington place the importance ot teaching the students good sportsmanship high on the list. Playing the game fairly is just as important as playing the game well. Senn-Waller Day was a big occasion in our school year. Mr. Harry C. Carr, prin- cipal of Senn, is shown here addressing a Waller-Senn assembly. With him on the stage, left to riqht, are Miss Naomi Anderson, who helped plan the aitairy Ierry Hooker, president of the Waller Stu- dent Council, who acted as master ot ceremonies, and Miss Nellie Marie Quinn, our principal, who made this occasion possible. .. The students conduct exciting experiments in class, go to Lincoln Park on sketching trips and create a variety of art objects for the sales campaigns. Contributing to the color and cheerful' ness of the school are the Waller Art Guild, the Waller Art Club, and the Wal- ler Bulletin Board Artists, which are spon- sored by Mrs. Elston. Advanced students comprise the W.A. G., with Georgia Homer as its president. Members print silk screen designs on fab- ric, block print, make sculpture, mobiles, jewelry, and of course paint pictures. At the end of the semester, they enjoy the traditional Guild Breakfast. The W.A.C., with Emilie Majarucon as representative, is comprised of lO girls and lU boys who eagerly pursue such projects as fabric designs, and enamelled copper jewelry. They ultimately use their designs when they make skirts, blouses, and ties. They frequently get together to go roller skating, horseback riding, and sketching. Waller's corridors have been dazzled with color, interest, and order because the W.B.B.A. and President lack Heinz have been keeping them that way. The fourteen members, responsible, conscien- tious, and tall IS' lU or morel, have shown real leadership in making Waller a pret- tier school. r aniza fiona 'aff' ff TOP ROW: Robert Nakamura, Tony Orlando, Ioseph Ieffries, Darwin Bowman, Tame: Smith, Robert Nairnan, lalmes Lin coln, Melvyn Goldberg, Ned Voqlica, William Walcatani ROW 2: Charlene Thomas, Myrtle Nelson, ludy Gifford, Yirii Markart, Rosalind Bosnak, Yvonne Einz, Ruth Staprens, Sharon Malick, Helen Sprincz, lanet Wekerle ROW 3: Tony Reyes, Ieanette Gifford, Loretta Vitale, Moira Dunn, Virginia Schuler, ludy Ahern, Myrna Nelson, Ruth Meria, Betty lean Young, Helen Gutschel ROW 4: Miss Anderson, sponsor, Betty Donovan, lewel Baierle, Mary Ann Welechlco, lean Geary, losephine Dacauisto, Kay Miwa, Marqaret Caesar ROW 5: Patricia Laliocca, Helen Yonehara, Michiko ltahara, Carolyn Enari, Iris Tanaka, Shirley Pardini, Kay Schaefer, Terrylee Suloia ROW 6: loEllen Walker, Kris Trautman, Charles Martini, Presi- dent, Carol Acopiado, Terry lacob Page 73 T TOP ROW: G. One of their first activities was to hold a ban- quet for World Service, helping the needy of war-stricken areas. These fellows are always willing to lend a help- ing hand. Each year, two members are sent to Spring- field, Illinois, to take part in the University of Good Gov- ernment program. Students from lllinois go there to learn about state government. They elect a Youth Governor and present original bills to a mock legislature. Darwin Bowman, an outstanding student, is president of the College Club, Commanding Officer in ROTC, an active Drama student, and former chaplain. Melvyn Goldberg, another outstanding student, is former president of this active organization. He was president of the Mixed Chorus and vice-president of the Senior class. lerry Hooker, picked as the outstanding leader of Waller High School, is president of Student Council, and treasurer of Hi-Y. He was presidentinf the Senior class and is also in Drama. Dick KQelland, a member of the Soanish Club and secretary of the Hi-Y, is active in the College Club and in Drama. He plays an important part in the ROTC organization. A person who is seen around school every day is Chuck Krause. As anyone will tell you, he is active in Chorus. George Lesch, one of the top students in his class, is one of the top men in ROTC. He is viceepresident of the Kingsmen now. Bob Naiman, a familiar person around school, is president of our club and vice-president of his class. He is an industrious person, being an active member of the Social Committee. lames Redman is one of the quieter members of the club, but when it comes to work he is always ready. He is a member of the Audio-Visual Aids Club and is a hall guard. One of our finest members is Mickey Sheehan. He has been with us for one and one-half years and is now our sergeant-at-arms. He is a member of the baseball team. To see Lee Wicklund working around school is not unusual. He is an important person in the Drama class because he helps with the scenery. WON'T YOU COME IN . . . and discuss the possibili- ties of a nursing career with our Miss Iackson? NURSES have employment when others are unemployed. Nursing serv- ices are always in demand. NURSES know that their education is a wonderful foundation for a happier wifehood and mother- hood. Eight out of IO nurses marry within 5 years of grad- uation. NURSES need not be lonely. Their lives are built around peo- ple: and people are interest- ing. NURSES can return to their profession after years in the home or on a parttime basis to help family budgets. NURSES travel. A nurse's services are required on an ocean liner, an overseas plane, in armed services and for foreign and domestic assignments. Other nurses prefer to work within walking distances of their homes. NURSES have variety. Careers are open to them in the indus- trial, public health, or hos- pital fields. Others like pri- vate duty or office nursing. NURSES know the moral satisfaction that comes of helping others. Nurses are honored mem- bers of a profession that maintains life and brings con- tinued happiness to others. For More Information on What Nursing as a Career Could Mean to You, Won't You Come In and Talk With Our MISS IACKSON? CALL Dlversey 8-6400. Miss Iackson will be happy to see you at your convenience.
