' Occasionally one meets a person who is com- pletely happy in her Work, perfectly fitted for it, and admirably in accord with her associates. Such a per- son Was Mary Ryan, a teacher at Waller since l935. Waller lost Miss Ryan last November, after an ill- ness of a few months, and with her passing We lost, and her profession lost, a person of unusual versatility and talents. During the course of her teaching career Miss Ryan had been the chairman of a music depart- ment, the attendance officer and assistant principal at Waller Branch, and the drama coach and teacher of senior elective English here in the main building. Her vivid personality impressed itself upon all her pupils. So long as one of them lives, Miss Ryan Will not be forgotten, but will be remembered with joy. To honor her memory We, the graduating class of Iune, l953, dedicate this, our yearbook, to our dear friend and beloved teacher, Miss Mary Ryan. - it Y V V , . ,...aq.,.,. J Uur PHI EIPAI. NELLIE MARIE QUINN ln September l953 Miss Nellie Marie Quinn was greeted by Wal ler High School as our new prm cipal ln the months that have passed since then Miss Quinn has become known to all ot us. We looked for her at basketball games and were always rewarded by hear- ing her cheer as enthusiastically as any of us. We saw her at the music festivals, applauding our choruses. We saw her sharing our laughter at the senior plays. Those ot us who participated in these activities were delighted at her personal recogni- tion of the contributions we made to the success ot the events. We have come to know our principal as one who is sincerely pleased when we succeed, sincerely interested in our problems and in our welfare, and sincerely dedicated to helping us realize our full potentialities. We have experienced three wars in the last thirty-six years and have undergone the most violent economic adjustment in the history of our nation. You have no personal recollection of World War I and barely a measure ot appreciation ot the deprivations and shock of the early nineteen thirties. But tor your parents, these events left scars. World Vlfar ll and our problems in Korea and the Orient today are an ever-present threat to our American Independence. As Waller graduates you have come to understand some of the essen- tials required for honest dealing among nations. Our inheritance gives us the obligation to support moral values throughout the world, not only Within our own borders. You have awakened to the tact that American standards oi moral and spiritual values must be earned and paid for through our will- ingness to exercise them in our daily lives. Having inherited the rules tor democratic living, we can keep the priv- ileges ot such living only as we share our understanding and benefits with those among us and with the peoples beyond our borders. We must deter- mine to assist others to see and appreciate the true values ot equitable living standards and then to aid others in attaining these values we enjoy. Together, we at Waller have identified objectives and provided means for the development ot these objectives: Character, Leadership, and Service. ln your daily school experience you created circumstances that gave you an opportunity to gain a comprehensive foundation oi democratic rules and standards. Now you face a new world. May the good work of your high school days always remain an inspiration to good citizenship. When we of the graduating class of Iune l953 chose as the theme of our yearbook, 'YOUTH REPLYES, l CAN, we had in mind some of the special activities and achieve- ments which prove that we have a right to the motto. ln the following pages we have collected many pictures showing Wallerites playing and working, living and learning, and constantly growing, serving, and achieving. Here is our record, one of which we are proud. Privileged to wear a W for service to the school performed in a variety of capacities, from hall guard, office clerk, librarian, to solo- ist in the operetta, officer in the Student Coun- cil, lead in the senior play, and editor of the Yellow and Blue, are the following graduates: Mead Gifford, Barbara Burns, Norton lacobs, Shafiga Daulet, Betty Hollingsworth, Lorraine Tillman, Neal Ball, Lena Carine, Norman Wer- ner, Floyd Earl, Basil Talbott, Georgia George- son, and loan Karl. Others who were generous with their time and talents in the service of Waller in our class are Connie Berbas, Rosemary Booton, Muriel Carr, Tom Encheff, Richard Harding, Connie Mack Higgins, Wanda Kaihara, Mary LaRocca, Ruth Melton, Beverly Moley, Robert Monsell, Lillie Ckuhara, Harold Raiman, Ar- lene Schwarzer, Barbara Soraparu, Rosemary Tengler, and Barbara Weinant. Ever mindful of the fact that scholarship is one very good field for us to prove that Youth Can, we would like to give special mention to graduates who have been members of Sig- ma Tau Sigma, our honor society. Dennis Hill, Harold Raiman, Doreen Kovitz, Pat Hathaway, Clinton Meininger, Mary Stiles,'Carol Bartelt, Yoko Arakawa, Barbara Burns, Shafiga Daulet, Betty Boanta, lean Fujinaka, Mary Daniels, Neal' Ball, Barbara Soraparu, Basil Talbott, Kaye Tymitz, Deborah Storck, Bernard Sproat, and Giovanna Sgaraglino all distinguished themselves consistently in scholarship. ,WWA . Perhaps the editors are saving the best tor the last. At any rate, athletics and athletes are held in high regard at Waller. Turner After spending our freshman year with Miss Mary Lyman in Room ll5, during which time we put on a talent show for the other freshman divisions, our division moved to 306 with Mrs. Elston Elston for our division teacher. Our second year was spent getting acquainted with the new division. Our third year started out wonderfully with the planning of a skating party at the I-lub. During the specialty numbers, Mrs. Elston put on an exhi- bition for us. We became more active in Student Council with lim Lincoln elected president and Pete Scianna our representative. Nancy Petersen was elected president of Sigma Tau Sigma and Barbara Lesch ran for Carni- val Oueen, thus doing her part in raising money for the STS Scholarship Fund. Another skating party was planned, this time with Phil Meria in the spot- light. We were one of the first divisions to have WOW payment of the Stu- dent Fee, and for the first time in our history we saw a Talent Show. Ours was one of three divisions given a party by the P.-T.A. We also discovered artistic talent. Rosemary Pecoraro, one of Waller's cheerleaders, won an art award in a recent contest. Our Donna McNee was a candidate for Home- coming Queen, and Diane Paulson had a part in the senior class play, You Cczn't Take It with You.. ln our 4B semester Bob Hogan became Council representative, and lim Lincoln was re-elected division president and promoted to Lieut.-Colonel on City Staff. We are well represented in all school organizations and are looking forward to a happy and successful 4A semester. UNIUH5 DIVISION 125-6 MRS. LICHTON'S DIVISION TOP ROW: M. Iones, L. Deilorto, R. After a hectic Week of getting adjusted, we settled down to the routine of high school life. Next semester, we moved to l02. Here Mrs. Schisler did much to organize us as a division known for its school spirit. Then Mrs. Schisler became sopho- more adviser and Miss Dariotis became our division teacher. ln 2B We moved to 300 and Mr. David Lavine, Who has been our division teacher ever since. Other moves brought us to 201, to 200, and finally to 202. In spite of changes in membership, the spirit of our group has remained unchanged through the semesters. We have had, for example, the president, the vicepresident, the secretary, and the treasurer of the Student Council in our division. Two of our members Were Class officers in 4B. The 4A vice- president is one of our group. Some of us are in Sigma Tau Sigma and on the honor roll. We are well represented in the College Club, the choruses, and the ROTC by members and officers. Some of our members are doing out- standing Work in drama. As we leave high school, the brightest memories We will take with us will be of the good times We had in division and of the friends We made there. SE IUH5 MISS MUNSON'S DIVISION TOP ROW: T. Kaihara I Karl In the fall of l949, an eager group of awkward yet ambitious young freshies entered division 210' and met their division teacher, Miss Iean Munson, for the first time. Here, they adapted themselves to their school schedules for the next seven semestersp then in the eighth they moved to 208. In four years' time, a small but firm nucleus of eleven from the original group remained intact, While additions from division 100, l06, 121, 201, 202 and 2ll were received in the middle semesters. And always, there Was Miss Munson to guide and advise us through our difficulties. We have seen the development of maturity and confidence, preparations to face the responsibilities which lie before us. We have encouraged and helped our friends to become class leaders. We have been represented in the school activities and organizations throughout the eight semesters. The 4B president and Cadet-Major of the ROTC, the Homecoming Queen, the president of the Advanced Spanish Club, the president of the Projectors' Club, and the co-editor of the Yellow cmd Blue are from this division, as are star- ring members of the senior play casts, outstanding members of art and music organizations, sports, ROTC, and Sigma Tau Sigma. JUUHNALIS Members of these two classes in journalism kept their fingers on the pulse of the school, wore out shoe leather tracking down stories for the YELLOW AND BLUE, and broke fingernails typing them. The jokes you laughed at in Parentheses, the stories that kept you in- formed about events in school, the personal items you read e a g e r l y, the biographical sketches which honored you and your classmates, in short, all the fun you looked forward to on alternate Wednesdays when the YELLOW AND BLUE was delivered to your division room, was made possible by these two classes of journalism students. A glimpse behind scenes would reveal the faithfulness with which these scribes work- ed to keep you up to date on school news, to bring you en- tertaining pictures and attrac- tive pages, and furthermore to bring them to you on time and without error. The journalists, in turn, thank you, the students, for your en- thusiasm, your praise, and your faithfulness in reading their efforts. IOURNALISM CLASSES TOP ROW: C. Higgins, R. Piontkowski, E. V. Anderson 203-6 is one of the liveliest divisions here at Waller. lt is composed of twenty-eight students and their division teacher, Mr. D. V. Anderson. Varied talents and a willingness to cooperate characterize the members of this group. Let's look at what they have accomplished. Marion Bimorin's singing and the accordian playing of Vince Arcuri are often the highlights of the Talent Shows. The blended voices ot Adela Morales, Diane Larsen, and Carol Burke help make the mixed chorus a success. The latter two are often seen during the Peppermints' meetings. Iackie Ferrara is an active member of the Tri-Hi-Y. Melvyn Goldberg's voice is heard in the operettas, in the Bobed Choir, and in Mixed chorus.. He is also the president of the Waller Hi-Y and a member of the College Club. Don Miller and Gregg Kruse are more interested in sports than in music, and with good reason, since they are two of the best baseball players on the Waller nine. Although Fred Stewart isn't on the baseball team, he's keeping a high batting average in division in serving as class president. Annette Marasa is vice-president. Noreen Nee, secretary in division, is also the best lunior girl athlete. Carol Barette, Paul Abbate, Genevieve Bauman, and Mary Nichols hold other offices in this division. The outstanding Iunior hostess, Connie Bianchi, helped make our parents feel at home on Iunior Day. Two other members of the College Club are Harriet Lindsay, an art major student, and Amy lshibashi, member of the Waller Art Club. Amy is also vice-president of Sigma Tau Sigma, and Marge has worked as a gym clerk since she first came to Waller. Eleanore Fortun, Audrey Keller, Beverly Lawton, Charlene Ferguson, Dorothy Redmond, Edna Lessentine, and Shirley Iones are ardent drama fans, and never miss a senior play. All of 203-6 appears regularly at the Friday Night Socials, too. We're all learning to work together and to play together, and we're growing up in the process. Division 310-4 - Miss Margaret Gallagher Hitting the top by leaps and bounds is Division 310-4. Although only a 2A group, you have heard of us quite often in the past semester. As the largest division in the school, with a total of thirty-five members, we of 310 work hard to keep up our fine record. Much of the thanks for this record goes to Miss Margaret Gallagher, our division teacher. Through thick and thin, good times and bad, she has helped her group, and when you hear a member of 310 say, I'm mighty glad to be a member of Miss Gallagher's division, he means it. In the big Wallerian sales drive in the early part of 1953, this group bought more books than any other division in the school. Everyone really got behind Nancy Widmann, the division salesman,, and supported her. Most of the division members participate in at least one of the school activities, many are working in three or four.
