THE ROBERT A. WALLER HIGH SCHOOL l pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation, indivisible, with Liberty and Iustice for all. U ITED WE AN As an American citizen, l take my place beside the armed forces of the nation, willing and ready as they are to protect the homes and lives, the Well-being, and the freedom of my fellow-citizens -- to defend the country l love - to maintain its cause against all ene- mies and every danger. And to this task I pledge my whole strength and my whole heart. -Civilian Defense of the United States of America. 4- X 4 Q 4 f 4 V A 153 1 :Y A MAN OF UNDERSTANDING, who gives a listening ear to problems brought before him by teachers and students alike, is Mr. Lipman, Principal of our school. Well informed on world affairs, he also knows what is going on here in Waller. Respected by students and faculty, he directs the school on a high educational level, determined to keep Waller among the first in the rank of city high schools. ng fx X ,ff-ON . Miss Schinkel didn't put on her coat just to have her picture taken-the weather was about zero. From the pleasant look on his face, Mr. Strauss must have discovered something artistically pleasing. Mrs. Whelan blends well with the artistic panel behind her. Mr. Throgmorton isn't throwing a kiss, he is eating peanuts. Mr. Criz is as much surprised as anyone to see himself in action as baseball coach. Mr. Lipman and Mrs. Quinn happened to drop in 103 at the same time and we thought they would make a good picture. The results of this spread in organization are highly gratifying both to the juniors and to the faculty. The move- ment has been enthusiastically supported by the junior classes and for good reason. Not only does it pave the way for their senior year by educating them in the business procedure of a senior class, but it gives to each group a feeling of unity. ln short, it has proved highly satisfying to all concerned and we are justly proud of this new addition to our activities. Officers are as follows: 4A President: Ioe Morreale Treasurer: Hedwig Dietz Vice-president: Iames Casey Secretary: Rosemary Iostock Faculty Adviser - Miss Talbot 4B President: Leo Nerroth Treasurer: lean Koch Vice-pres.: Andrew Valentine Secretary: Elsie Springer Faculty Adviser - Miss Talbot 3A President: Alex l-lubman Treasurer: Lea Bertani Vice-president: Iohn O'Neil Secretary: Chester Ioichi Faculty Adviser - Miss Shannon 3B President: Theodore Benno Treasurer: Melvin Bobich Vice-president: Eleanore Busse Secretary: Ernestine Boles Faculty Adviser - Miss Porter JUNE, 1942 OFFICERS Ioe Morreale, President James Casey, Vice-President Rosemary Iostock, Secretary Hedwig Dietz, Treasurer DIVISION Ioc-3A - MISS NEAL IUNE, 1942 Gilbert Kenner, lohn Lindsey, Iames Casey, Richard Schoenherr. WALLER NORTH DIVISION ALUMNI CELEBRATE 66TH ANNIVERSARY TO THE IUNE GRADUATION CLASS OF 1942, GREETINGS: The Waller-North Division Alumni Association welcomes you as the youngest alumni of our grand old school. You are the newest members of our association and in your willing hands, united with those of the boys and girls from other high schools, rests the future greatness of Chicago. Carry high the torch of your endeavor, and may Waller be as proud of your achievements as we are of the grand old school and the beloved teachers who gave us the education and ideals with which to meet and conquer the problems and battles of life. Best wishes to every one of you. Sincerely, Waller-North Division Alumni Association, Mary Faulkner Vigardt, President. To the alumni is entrusted the duty of keeping alive traditions and memories. Along with the heritage of the past the alumni have a duty to the present, to support the student body in all its activities and to promote the welfare of the school in every manner possible. The alumni are better able to do this because they are the citizens of today, the voters of the community, and the business and professional leaders of today and tomorrow. It is our job to maintain interest in the high school that gave us the education through which we have attained our positions in the business affairs of life. Many prominent Chicagoans attended Waller High School or old North Division as it was formerly called. HISTORY North Division High School was established in 1875 as the first north side high school in the city of Chicago. It was one of three division high schools - the North, South, and West - opened to supplement Chicago's first high school, the old Central High, now inadequate to meet the growing needs of Chicago. It was located in the old Sheldon School. In 1884 it was moved to a new structure at the north- east corner of Wells and Wendell. In 1900, when a new building was constructed at Orchard Street, the name of the school was officially changed to Robert A. Waller. However, the name of North Division was affectionately retained as a heritage of the early history of Chicago. In 1937 was commenced the construction of a modern addition, opened to classes in September, 1938. Predecessors of Mr. Maurice C. Lipman, our present principal, have been: FRANCIS HAN- FORD, 1875-76: HENRY H. BELFIIEILD, 1876-841 OLIVER S. WESTCOTT, 1884-19141 IOI-IN E. ADAMS, 1914-33: IOSEPH BACHE, 1933-36: and DOUGLAS F. VAN BRAMER, 1936-37. On February 7, 1933, representatives from fourteen graduation classes, ranging from 1886 to 1929, formed a permanent alumni association which culminated in the formation of our Waller-North Division Alumni Association under a charter procured from the State of Illinois to function as a y 4 'S C corporation not for profit. lt is recognized as one of the most active N ! high school alumni organizations in Chicago. l On October 24, 1941, the alumni, students, and faculty celebrated U the 66th anniversary of the founding of our school. At the annual homecoming party a large attendance and a fine program made a gala affair. The outstanding event was a basketball game between .I Waller's fine basketball team and an alumni team composed of stars I of Waller's former championship teams. There was an overwhelming demand that this game should be made an annual event. Were it not that the Waller stars of today soon become members of the alumni, we could not hope to carry on this competition with the expert players that Coaches Chappel and Kipp continually turn out for Waller. Alumni activities include summer outings, beach parties, dances, dinners, card parties, and other functions to which all graduates are welcome. Annual dues are fifty cents, but members of the graduating gf! classes are automatically members of our association for the year of their graduation, without payment of any dues. D e EJJMA Among the Waller Alumni, none was ever more closely associated with the school than Miss Dorothea E. Vent. For many years she was in the Department of Physical Edu- cation, part of the time the only instructor for almost 2,000 girls. The influence of her excellent character and teaching were of immeasurable value to the pupils under her in- struction. Since her retirement in June, 1941, she is making her home in West Los Angeles, California. OSTROWSKY The French classes of Waller took part in the Cinquieme Soiree Coopera- tive of the High Schools and Iunior Colleges of Chicago and its suburbs, at the Central Y.M.C.A. College Auditorium, March 27, l942. Our contribution consisted of the singing of French-Canadian tolk songs which were designated as Un Peu de Canada - A Bit of Canada. lt gave a simple, colorful, and musical impression of the French-Canadian spirit. The Esprit de Corps of the students was splendid, and the interpretation ot the songs vivid and interesting. To bring out Americanism in connection with the study of French, the pupils have undertaken individual projects, as extra-curricular activity, of the French- speaking communities in the Western Hemisphere such as Canada, French Guiana, Martinique, Miquelon and St. Pierre, and others. The projects are carried out in the form of essays, Scrapbooks, prints, maps, costumes, soap carvings, and collecting folk-songs and proverbs. The spirit ot Americanism and intra-continental unity and friendship are thereby brought to the tore and friendly neighborliness, which ever language may be spoken, receives recog- nition and emphasis. We are justly proud of a cooperat- ive atmosphere which generates and develops real loyalty, initiative and understanding. Every year, the Daughters of the American Revolution award a medal to a Senior girl who is chosen by the mem- bers of the Senior class as the best girl citizen. The quali- ties of good citizenship upon which this choice is based are: dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. This year Honore Buchinskas, who will be graduated in Iune, 1942, was selected for this honor. VG-AN, K Z 2 gl, w- I Q T l o- 1.7. In three years Waller students have raised their crew from the lowest ranks to the top, as Chicago Champions in the senior or varsity division. Sponsored by the Lincoln Park Boat Club, both Iayvee tjuniorl and Varsity crews are coached 3 by Mr. Arthur Skrabel, a graduate of Waller and a member of the Club. His perseverance and coaching ability were the deciding factors in the success of the crew. Schools from out of town invited the crews to compete, and last season our oarsmen met the University of Wisconsin, St. Iohn's Military Academy, Ecorse and Grosse Point of Michigan, and the schools engaged in Chicago rowing. 1 ' A shining gold cup reposes in Mr. Lipman's office, proclaiming to all the world that our Varsity crew and the Chicago champions are one and the same. 5 We X N aw an ,. Waller was the equal of at least four of the stronger teams, but tough breaks and the weather combined helped to give a disastrous season. In summing up the season, Waller, always fighting with a spirit known only to the boys in blue, lost one game by one point and three others by one touchdown each. Since the boys played con- sistently good football we are not disconsolate over the final outcome. We are proud ci a team that played its best for the sake of the game. fx ,Q ps 5 NJ CHEER LEADERS My frfwmft- GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATIQN DELEGPJYES BATON TWIRLERS Row 1: C, Lindbloom, G. It has more than six hundred members. Have you ever heard the groans, shreiks and howls emerging from the girls' gym? Upon entering, you would most likely see a group of G.A.A. girls hard at play at one of the various tournaments the G.A.A. sponsors. Some of the student activities sponsored by the G.A.A. are horseback riding, roller skating, hiking, bicycling, and intramural meets during the course of a semester. The purpose of the organization is the creation of good sportsmanship, health and alertness. The sponsor of the G.A,A. is Miss Dixon, and her co-workers are Miss Zidek and Mrs. Hoyer. The officers during the last year were Iessie Shusett, President, Evelyn Ackerman, Vice-president, Beverly Wilkerson, Secretary, Virginia Cacioppo, Treasurer. A NOOK IN THE BRANCH LIBRARY P1 'ie KI YBXCPA flfgyy ST. PATRlCK'S DAY QIXWPM CLIPPINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS IN AND OUT OF THE CLASS ROOM FOUR YEARS AT WALLER HIGH Waller High School . . . Here the timid and shy Freshie finds new subjects and new surroundings. Here he enters an exciting 'chapter in his life. Busily he engages himself in building his founda- tion for the future. Gradually he becomes acquainted with his class- mates, studies, and teachers. Step by step he climbs higher: Algebra, English, Physics, he conquers one subject after another. Year by year, still climbing steadily . . . clubs, assemblies, debates . . . farther and farther he rises, filling his little, growing head with knowledge. Growing, growing . . . The Waller spirit envelopes him . . . He learns to know the Yellow and Blue, Orchestra, and Baseball. The years fly by . . . Sophomore, lunior, and . . . Waller Senior. A Senior, sure and confident, no longer is he timid and shy, but certain, conquering, and self-possessed. As a Senior he steps out of Waller, the School in which he has made so many dear friends, carrying memories of the best period in his life. After departure he and his friends will go their different ways, perhaps never to meet again. He is again a Freshie , this time in a great and different world, as on graduation day he takes a last backward glance at Waller before he eagerly strides out into the great unknown. ART DEPARTMENT Decorating the school halls, making posters, and helping with stage settings are all vital activities of the art student's work. The art department does not limit the students to one type of work, but teaches them different kinds of art and appreciation. To see the results, we have only to look around the halls at the posters and at the murals. The various phases of art work include drawing, painting, cartooning, fashion designing, and clay sculpture. In charge of the Waller art department are Mr. Strauss, Mrs. Whelan, Mrs. Clettenberg, and Mrs. Vesley, who use as their slogan: A Thing of Beauty and a Ioy Forever. SCHOOL CARNIVAL The carnival at Waller has its shows and exhibits sponsored by division rooms, and this year there were more division room projects than ever before. Balloons, hot dogs, fortune telling, portrait drawing, Hawaiian leis, canes and candy were most popular. This carnival was definitely the best ever given. More money was raised, more fun was had, and more colorful, interesting booths lined the walls of the two gyms than ever before. The profits were put into the Chil- dren's Aid Fund. Miss Tess was chairman of the able committee responsible for everything concerning the carnival. The fine cooperation of students and faculty contributed to the carnival's success. BAND AND ORCHESTRA l am a member of the Band or I am a member of the Orches- tra . These are statements any student might well be proud to make. Not only does membership in these organizations improve the instrumental technique of talented musicians but it also improves the classical background of all its members. Even though a member of the Band or Orchestra who has graduated does not continue playing actively there remain in the back of his mind the fundamentals he has learned and a love for the classics he has either played or heard. An evening long awaited with trembling hearts is the night of the Music Festival. About the close of every semester the Band and Orchestra, with the Choirs, give a concert which displays the im- provements over the preceding semester. SOCIAL Extracurricular and social activities are many and varied at Waller. Best of all, they are enthusiastically supported, developing a better and more interesting school life. Highlighting last year's social life were the carnival, senior dinner dance, talent review, and the Truth or Consequences show. Backbone of Waller's pleasanter moments is the ever popular Friday night dance, where everyone meets and mingles for an en- joyable evening. Supporting. activities are our clubs, among which are yachting, reading, bowling and dramatics. These social affairs create opportunities for the students to become better acquainted with one another and with the faculty, making for pleasanter relationships. Overshadowing all these has been the sportsmanship, orderliness, and courtesy that have prevailed through- out the year, to preserve our usual high standing with visitors. THE BOWLING CLUB The Bowling Club meets every Thursday at the Monte Carlo Re- creation. The coach of the club is Mr. Kaiser, a fine bowler and a good sportsman. The club consists of four teams. During the fire drills the Fire Marshals aid in the orderly clearing oi the buildings and direct students to the proper exits. The efficient fire-drills at Waller are accomplished only through the cooperation oi students and faculty with this body. ' VICTORY Boorc DRIVE The Student Council, Sigma Tau Sigma, and the Library, cooperated in a successful campaign for collecting books to send to the Army and Navy. HALL GUARD ORGANIZATION The aim and particular task of the Hall Guard Organization is to promote civic pride in Waller and to preserve order in the corridors. In keeping the halls clean and cleared, the Hall Guards have truly accomplished something worthy of Commendation. Mr. Strauss, the sponsor of this intricate piece of vital machinery, has truly been a main iactor in the success of its operation. Pictures on pages 87 and 88. A GLIMPSE INTOTHE MAINTENANCE , I 9 This page gives us a glimpse into the maintenance de- partment. Mrs. Witt is in charge of our large and busy cafeteria. Mrs. Dost, the matron, takes care of the lost and found department and administers to the sick. The carpenter, Mr. Weaver, Fred , is just about the busiest man around the place, inside and out. In charge of and responsible for the maintenance of our entire building is Mr. Waldron, whose genial Irish face is familiar to all of us. A We have even a glimpse of the machinery which keeps the wheels turning. ...X- in l Let The Sigma Tau Sigma sponsors coaching classes to give individual help to pupils who have been absent or have found difficulty. The Library Staff cheerfully gives assistance to any one seeking reference material. This library desk, presided over by Mrs. Golden, is familiar to all of us. In l03, a beautiful array of murals is in the process of development at the hands of art students from the classes of Mr. Strauss. The lovely rock garden is a thing of beauty at the branch. In the Physics laboratory, Mr. Paine and his class are investigating the mat- ter of batteries, a very important sub- ject, especially in these days. A lovely background of blooming plants makes the Botany laboratory, with Mrs. Kummer, a pleasant place to work. And, as for animal life, Mr. Hackett oversees the study of vertebrates and invertebrates, and other such things. In the Foods classes, girls learn to prepare meals scientifically and with regard to budget necessities. : '-'I 'T M gl V QM-QE ui f X is J Pupils at Waller have opportunity to learn practical skills Without neglecting aesthetic ap- preciation. A fashion show regularly exhibits the possibilities offered in the clothing classes, and they are of great importance when it comes to producing costumes for school affairs. The foods classes exhibited their skill by serving tea and cakes to the faculty. The art classes are ready, willing, and able to make posters, illustrations, or scenery at short notice. An interested group at the Branch is learning from Mr. Kaiser how to use the jig saw. It looks as if almost anybody could enjoy working at this. As a part of the great project, Mr. Kosloff's class is receiving instruction in making model airplanes. The print shop boys, working under Mr. Buss, print the various kinds of things that are needed on all occasions. They set type, read proof, design, and print. .5 f .if -af- 1 I A 4: :Mig F, L. uw .vN,'L'f4 D751 M!! iz!! This was the date of their enrollment at Waller as Freshies. They were bewildered by the rush of strange students around them, and did not enter prominently into the life of the school. No record has been kept of any outstanding event or achievement in their first year, but they have the distinction of being the first freshman class to be admitted to the new building. By the time their sophomore year began, they had lost much of their confused feeling and had accustomed themselves to the school routine. One of the most important events of the year was Waller's First Annual Benefit Carnival. At the opening of the Iunior year, a group from the branch came to the main building to be included in the class and its activities. The long anticipated senior year had been coming closer and closer, and in September, 1941, it became a reality. The seniors walked through the halls with a self-confident manner that was quite a contrast to the confused sensations of their freshman days. The seniors were busy with class rings, class play, and many interesting and exciting events. The Dinner-Dance added a touch of glamour, and graduation night became a perfect ending to four wonderful years. WALLER SCHOOL SONG With a spirit everlasting, We will praise you, Waller High. We will cheer for you, and the boys in blue, With a iaith that ne'er will die. Tho' the odds may be against you, Tho' opposing voices ring, As we cheer for Waller High School, we will sing.
