Two elections were necessary to decide tl victors of class leadership. The results were George Hatvai as president, Stanley Krupinsky as vice-president, whi Leonore Huber and Evelyn Kazos took the offices of sei retary and treasurer. During an informal cabinet meeting, the most diligei and dependable members of the class were chosen for tl various committees and their chairmen. The committees elected were: the Annual Committi with Peter Ried as chairman, the Dinner Dance Committi with Peter Pappas, chairman, the Budget Committee wit Beatrice Komsky, chairman, the Pin and Ring Committi with Carl Sauerg the Cap and Gown Committee wil Esther Mathieseng the Play Committee with Robert Cul as chnirmang the Publicity Committee organized undi Beth Stahr as chairman, the Announcement Committi with Ann Kaiselj. V , N 0fJ7'bQffif?frrx, , A great many class meetings were held during tl semester to keep the class well informed as to progre and work of the committees. The dinner' dance, the senior-class play, the differel parties, and dances, showed the splendid social relationsh between the Senior Students and it will live in our hear forever. 1 1 5 J- f,frx .1 l'.,,', , Ll-Co4f' Z f h X Lf Lzlfprx, . . These students have worked long and diligently to make this edition representative of the life of the students at Waller. The journalism class has cooperated with the Annual staff in making this year book a noteworthy achievement. In addition to their work on the Annual, the Journal- ism class publishes the Yellow and Blue, the school newspaper. The Yellow and Blue is issued every two weeks and contains general news items, sports events, features from Franklin Branch, and personal chatter. Like all good journalists, the staff members keep an ear to the ground and a finger on the pulse of the school. They're demon proof readers too. A misspelled word or an incorrect comma hasn't a chance against their blue pencils. Because of their knowledge and interest, their ability to write and correct copy, they were asked to cooperate with the annual committee. The efforts of the journalistic group are distributed to the XValler student body by the energetic salesmanship of the Yellow and Blue Business Management. By the part of life we have lived we ay r p s ol f e. True, one makes his own life, one shapes it towards adversity prosperit . But whether he plans it with all the wisdom of Man or whether he mo it with a careless hand, not one natural ill or fortune will he escape. Thus I say: I prophesy for the dreamer his dreams untarnished by reality. I prophesy for the hewers of wood, the drawers of water, the bent of burdens and the torn of scourgesn the quiet of sleep-the fruit of their labor. I prophesy for the artist, sub- lime expression. I prophesy for all, the fulfillment of his just desires. To all I prophesy success and failure-to all I prophesy love and the glorious pursuit of love. I prophesy for you happiness and suHering, riches and poverty, work and rest, turmoil and peace. All the fires of Hell you shall know and all the ecstasies of Paradise shall you enjoy. I prophesy for you the reward of Death-I prophesy for you and those that shall follow you, the glorious, awful God-Gift of Life! -Alfred Cummings MEDITATION Four Pillars tall and stately stand Guarding four previous happy years, Which soon will fade in memory. Eager to face the new-and yet, We eannot help but feel regret Now that the time for parting nears. Looking down life's winding road What does the future hold in store? Almost one hundred had proved in Music I that they were sincerely interested in chorus singing and would be of value in a choral organi- zation. Chorus singing is an ideal group activity. Al- though the work of individuals is important, the united effort of the chorus is the first consideration. Regardless of musical training, here all members have the oppor- tunity to express themselves musically and to realize the necessity for co-operation and uesprit de corpsy' in producing beautiful tone and fine interpretation. The enjoyment and recreation in singing part songs well is always preceded by much hard work. Per- fecting a song requires hours of drill and intensive application. Not until one sings in a choir is it pos- sible to realize the amount of work each song represents. Choir members find that active participation in choir singing results in more thoughtful listening to music and greater appreciation of all musicians. This choir has passed the drudgery stage, and in three months, has learned a Bach chorale, some Russian part songs, a Negro spiritual, sacred music, and patri- otic and folk songs. ln addition to becoming more pro- Hcient in part-singing, they are distinguishing them- selves in solo work and singing of small groups. When- ever solos occur in the songs they are studying, there are several who are equally able to perform. Members of the choir who belong to the Soloists' Club are out- standing in their ability to sing solos, duets, trios, and quartets. The Choir boasts a composer among its mem- bers, Donald Middleton, who has composed several fine piano solosg and, when the eight boys who have been practising double quartets make their first public ap- pearance, the choir will feel doubly proud of the ver- satility of its members. If the good will. application, high ideals, and joy- ous singing shown in its first few months continues, Miss Tess' choir will soon make itself known. With the happiness its members find in singing, they prob- ably agree with Longfellow: Yea, music is the prophet's artg among the gifts that God hath sent, and of the most magnificent. 'qu' -, ME' UWWVH .,,,.. NF, ,U-L . . N- V V The Band Under the direction of Mr. Feldman, the forty members of WalIer's band have again been rewarded with a shield to decorate our auditorium. Though' some outside training is beneficial, only two semesters of elementary training is necessary to meet the entrance requirements. Usually the class is limited to the number of instruments furnished by the school. But a student mayprovide his own instrument if he so wishes. The class, which is conducted as informally as possible, practices every day. There is to be a new sound- proof room in our annex where these hooting, tooting, bandsters can practice with the greatest of ease. Without showing too much optimism Mr. Feld- man predicted that next semester Walleris band would excell its band of any previous year. ' Orchestra If there is any position in Waller which is worth attaining, it is a position in Waller's advanced orchestra. The requirements are two semesters of begin- ning orchestra or previous training equivalent to it. Only the outstanding of the beginning orchestra can advance to this position. At present the mem- bership is about thirty which is quite a large number over previous semesters. After much practice and diligent study they have come proficient in the field of music. The orchestra has given several successful concerts for which it has received special recognition. They are an important factor in Waller's grad- uation. There is a splendid future for Waller's orchestra. Beginners' Orchestra As we enter the second semester the desire to play some musical instru- ment is greater than ever. How wonderful it is to give vent to your emotions in music and pluck a few care-free notes on a violin. Waller offers you that chance. Any student in the freshman and sophomore years may enroll in the beginners orchestra. At the present time it has forty members and it hopes to have many more in the near future. After two semesters of hard study one may apply for entrance to the advanced group. Admission to the advanced orchestra is the goal of every beginner. Mr. Feldman, the instructor, suggests that the heights of a professional career can only be attained by persistent effort. ' 1 xl 0' ' 1-'Q'-Emi s MUSIC Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song, - I've been workin' on the railroadi' - My Lady Chloe - the close harmony of a male quartet echoes down the halls and wafts through open windows from the street below, audible testimony to the enthusiasm of the boys, and a constant menace to the concentration of their buddies still immured in classrooms. A little more than a year ago, the splendid pos- sibilities for the development of a choral organization were revealed in a Christmas program presented by the music orientation classes. The rich resonance of the baritones and the ethereal flutiness of the sopranos pro- vided the inspiration for the choir which garnered these eager young voices in February, 1937. Since the day of its inception, the growth curve of the choir mem- bership has been steadily upward, the mortality rate- surprisingly low. lts slogan would appear to be- once a member, always a member. The choir organization was followed by the rapid growth of small ensembles where budding Martinelli's and Flagstad's ind further opportunity to develop their talents. Today the Waller Orioles, the Treble Clef Club, the Clef and Staff, and the girls' trio are im- portant units in Waller's musical life. The first minstrel show, with its all boy cast, established what promises to become a tradition. It sky- rocketed to fame names that are now stellar attractions in school productions. This year's minstrel revealed new and even more promising talent. The enthusiasm these choristers possess induces them to spend many hours outside the regular rehear- sal in arduous practice. Time, effort, and distance are never counted too great to prevent attendance. Page Forty-two The popularity of music as an adjunct to assem- bly programs, crowds the choral calendar with engage- ments. Invitations to participate in community and city civic celebrations have been gratifyingly frequent. The Girls' Glee Club, which has its origin buried in some remote decade of Waller history, is a thriving organization serving a twofold purpose-to offer op- portunity for credit work in music and as a training period for prospective choir members. Many of its roster choose to remain with the club semester after semester declining invitations to choir membership. It plays an important, though perhaps, a less spectactular role, in life at Waller. Waller choristers possess a close kinship for each other if one may judge by the friendly groups travel- ing to and from school, between classes, and at parties. Perhaps this is because the purely social aspects of life have had their proper apportionment of time. Picnics, teas, ice cream socials, dances, expeditions, musical and otherwise, have helped cement friendships which origi- nated in some musical activity. Does this happy camaraderie and musical enthus- iasm terminate with graduation? Not if present plans are considered, for beginning September, 193 8, an alum- ni choir will receive graduates who have been permanent members of some musical organization in school. Scan the personnel of the choir. These young people are the leaders in other fields -- scholarship, athletics, civic life, too. This convinces one that music is the food of great minds, doesn't it? Students' time is oc- cupied with reading and seeing plays, with a study of stage technique and history of the drama. The pro- duction of plays on the Waller stage includes varied activities, such as, business managing, publicity and ticket sales, stage managing, stage settings and make- up, musical talent, and technical ability. All drama students avail themselves of the oppor- tunity to see excellent stage plays.-professional plays in the best theaters, plays by the Goodman Theatre actors, and by college players. Recently members of the club attended a matinee of Welles' Julius Caesar. At the Goodman they saw King Lear and Storm Over Patsyf' Other plays this semester were Night Must Falli' and Is Life Worth Living? , Electra,i' The Rivals. During the current semester the drama classes have produced two one-act plays, The Teapot on the Rocks and Station YYYY. The cast of the four- act play, Seventeen, presented on May 12 and 13 by the Senior Class, consisted largely of students who have had experience in the one-act plays. Thus, besides furnishing opportunities for appre- ciation of the theatre as an expression of art and for enjoyment of leisure time, the drama classes discover and develop latent dramatic ability among Waller's talented student body. Although the Hrst drama class was organized but one year ago, these classes are extremely popular and have grown rapidly. At present two large classes are enthusiastically engaged in all the activities of play production. Three plays are produced each semester and all the students participate in some way. With practically no theatre equipment, Waller is proud of its ability to produce creditable plays. There is natural talent among Waller student body as well as much enthusiasm. Page F arty-Ibm' ' aaffra.. Station YYYY This Tarkington play deals with a boy who cannot get his father's permission to go to a boy's camp. Her- bert's father is so deeply interested in radio, that he believes anything that comes in over the air. Herbert rigs up a means of broadcasting and lectures on the advantages of boys' camps. When his father hears this, he believes there is something in what he says be- cause the best minds in the country lecture on radio. We find Herbert victorious. Gales of laughter greeted the production of this play. THE CAs'r: Herbert Wlnstead .....4...t.,... .......................... .A.c..,..,. It was organized this semester for the purpose of improving the Terpsichorean abilities of the juniors and Seniors. It has proved to be very popular because it gives the girls and boys the opportunity for self-expression in dancing and because it promotes fine and good fellowship among members. It will undoubtedly be one of Waller's largest clubs next semester. The Merry Wallerites are visited occasionally by a pro- fessional dancing instructor who teaches them some fine points of this art. Some of the members were not able to dance when they joined the club, but under the skilled direc- tion of student and instructors they have learned grace, poise, and proficiency. The convivial spirit which characterizes this club is brought about by the willingness of the members to help and cooperate with each other. Paging All Ye Club Reporters With the idea that W'aller needed more of Walter Winchell's spirit Miss Howard founded the Reporter's Club. And oh! how they have gone to town. Through the aid of these gallant thirty members the Yellow and Blue has been able to get more news and better news. With a knack for getting any bits of interest they have turned our school up- side down digging out odd facts and many a feature story. Their slogan is to get the news or to die in the attempt. And they surely have stuck to their motto courageously. Yes, we are glad to inform you that there have been very few, if any casualties as yet. With dots and dashes and oodles and odles of flashes, they remain ready to serve in helping Waller's school paper to reach more distant peaks of success. Forum and Iunior Know Chicago The F0rum's membership is drawn from the junior and Senior classes. These students study parliamentary law and are therefore able to carry on their discussions according to Robert's Rules of Order. Events of local, national and even of world importance provide the subjects for their debates. Every student learns to express himself freely and convinc- ingly and to be interested in the affairs that figure in the daily press. Mrs. Mary Fitzgerald is the sponsor of this group. The Junior Know Chicago Club was formed by Mrs. Fuson a few semesters ago to take care of the overflow from the original Chicago Club. These city-dwellers are intensely interested in their home town and wish to learn more about it. They realize that Chicago holds a wealth of important and interesting spots and this club helps them to find out where those places are. During this semester, the club visited the Rosenwald Museum and viewed some of the buildings that received world wide attention during the 1893 XVorld,s Fair. International Relations The aim of the International Relations club, sponsorel by Mr. Taussig, is the intelligent study of international affairs through discussions of culture and customs, panel talks on international and maritime laws, the historical background of present day world affairs, and the study of current econ- omic moves and advances. Thus, through discussion, debates and talks, the problems and personalities of present inter- national relations are brought more vividly to the fore. The popularity of the club is manifest in its enrollment of thirty members, each one of whom has voluntarily joined one of the various specialty committees dealing with the individual problems of Europe, the Far East, and the two Americas. The Sodalitas Latina, at present under the sponsorship of Miss Porter, was organized a year ago for the pupose of stimulating greater interest in the Latin language and acquainting the mem- bers with Roman customs. True to the club motto, Facta non Verba, fDeeds Not Wordsj, slides and oral' reports illustrating Roman life have been given, not to mention the games which sharpened and developed each member's knowledge of Roman civilization, as well as providing entertainment. The members of this club may be distinguished by the pins in the form of small Roman lamps which they wear. French Club The French Club was formed by students of French and is under the supervision of Mrs. Ostrowsky. The club's forty members always start their meetings by singing their theme song, J'ai deux Amours f Two Loves Have Ilia. This is one of the clubs that has seen much activity this semester. The students do not speak French during their meetings, but instead learn about French life and customs by discussing them with their sponsor. In order that these members might come in closer contact with French life, Mrs. Ostrowsky had the French movie, Sans Familie Q Nobody's Boy J, shown for their benefit. Sigma Tau Sigma . Sigma Tau Sigma acts under the sponsorship of Miss Hermann and Mr. Jackson with the cooperation of the oflicers and various committees of the club. The sixty-five members of this outstanding organization are pupils pos- sessing the highest grades in the school. One of the principal aims of the Honor Society is to help with both material and spiritual values The famous Scholarship Campaign Week, the popular educational and entertaining films which were presented, the cooperation with National Youth Week, when the students acted as ushers, were all the results of the Honor Society's tireless efforts. Art Club and Art Appreciation Club The Art Club of Waller, sponsored by the senior art teacher, Mr. Strauss, gives an opportunity to students who are interested in the fine arts to meet socially and to exchange ideas. It is an opportunity for art students to continue to be active in the subject after the required courses are completed and for the student taking the art course to enter activities that cannot be offered to the entire classroom of average students. The Art Appreciation Club is an organization for students who are not expecting to give their donations actively to art, but who desire to be able to appreciate the beauties found all around them. The chief purpose of the group as directed by Miss Whelan is to learn to aspire to the higher and more exalted things in life through the study of beauty in all forms. German Club The German Club is probably the oldest in existence at Waller and after sixteen years is still very lively. The many activities of the club range from hikes to opera and concert parties. The aim of the club is to help its members to appreciate more fully German civilization, its customs and its traditions. It also assists in keeping the German language alive in the younger generations by using it at business and social meetings. The outstanding event presented by this club this semester was the Movie Emil Und Die Detektivev a very modern mystery-thriller in German. Page Forty-nine mx: 4 , 'V if ' ! ' ,f5X94575w I F . This popular club with a large membership of sixty, is a delightful and informal group. However, the club does have a definite aim: the develop- ment in its members of a sense of true beauty, a beauty which should be found in every phase of their personal life, in their manners, clothes, walk, speech and appearance. Under the able direction of Mrs. Blumenstock, the club has made rapid progress. H andwork Club For the girl who wishes to learn how to occupy spare time in a useful activity the Handwork Club is the ideal one to join. All girls may do so whether they know how to sew, or not although those who are not taking Clothing as a class subject are preferred. Stitching samplers, and attractive serving aprons and dress covers have been made by the members. Members also have their choice of making novel and serviceable pot holders, crocheted monogram hand bags, or the new ribbon turbans. Pupils interested are given careful attention and instruction by the spon- sor, Ruth B. Groneman. ' Chess and Checkers Club The Chess and Checkers Club offers a variety of advantages to the stu- dents who are fortunate enough to be numbered among the members. It de- velops a fast thinking and accurate mind, and provides for friendly student relationship. Mr. McCormick, the sponsor, with his mathematical mind and his talent for providing a friendly atmosphere, is well able tb guide the club on its way. In a world that rushes along at a sickening pace, the relaxation afforded by a quiet and pleasant mental game is very welcome. ' . Dancing Club The Dancing Club, reorganized from last semester, is one of the most popular clubs at Waller. Under the leadership of Miss Newberger, the club has grown rapidly. It boasts a membership of twenty couples, all of whom knew little or nothing about dancing at the beginning of the semester. The principal aims of the club are to teach the students proper conduct at a dance and the basic steps of dancing. Most of the members have never attended a social event, and this club doesn't want any of its members to become wall- flowers when they do attend dances. The boys are being taught how to ask a girl to dance, and the girls how to accept or refuse gracefully. Pan American Club In considering clubs, the student should bear in mind the Pan-American club. Its purpose is two fold: to provide a good time and to give the members information about the Spanish-speaking republics that lie to the south of the United States. During the semester, this club presented a Pan-American Day program both at Waller and Franklin Branch. The club sponsor is Miss Cameron. Let's play games! Miss Curtis will lead! The Clubis aim is primarily to give its members a good time, but at the same time it teaches them to plan a party intelligently and to know what games to suggest at a party outside of school. Camera Club To learn to take, develop, and print pictures, to know the theory in- volved in the various steps of producing pictures, and last but not least, to learn how to enjoy this worthy hobby, are the aims of the Senior Camera Club, sponsored by Mr. Paine. The club often tours Lincoln Park to take unusual pictures of landscapes and groups. The members try especially for those photo- graphs which are interesting for class discussion. Numerous prize pictures have been turned out by the Camera Club. The readiness with which this organi- zation cooperated with the Photo Department of this book deserves a word of praise. Commercial Digest The Commercial Digest Club, sponsored by Miss Kearns, has been formed for the purpose of editing the booklet The Commercial Digest. This booklet is written and edited by twenty-five commercial students. Its aim is to help the student to be successful in business and to acquaint him with modern business methods and happenings. The Commercial Digest has been invaluable to commercial students by teaching them business courtesy and by acquainting them with the qualities and abilities required of them when they go out into the business world. Library Club To read and give heed is the thought of the forty members enrolled in the Library Club under the sponsorship of Mrs. Golden. Through frequent discussions of books, an opportunity is given to the members to become better acquainted with good literature. The club is associated with the Interscholastic Society of Student Librarians, a city-wide organization in which two members of the Waller club are enrolled. The discussion of library methods may sound dull, but outside activities such as splash parties and dances prove very en- ticing and interesting. Commercial Club The Commercial Club, under the direction of Miss Berliner, offers its mem- bers many advantages. One of its aims is to acquaint them with the various business organizations in the city, their services to business and their methods of operating. Through this knowledge a more intelligent interest in the business and commercial life of the community may be aroused and developed. The club's program of activities includes tours to various places of importance from a business standpoint, spelling bees of commercial words, demonstrations of various oiiice appliances, films, and talks by business men and women. Natural History The Natural History Club, sponsored by Mrs. Anna Marie Kummer, our Botany teacher, is undoubtedly one of the most interesting clubs in existence in our high school. To study the history of living things, past and present, including man himself, is the purpose of this club. Talks by naturalists are one of the big attractions of this club. The members have gone on trips and hikes accompanied by guides who explain the objects of interest. Any pupil who feels that he is interested in Natural History may enroll with the assur- ance of being completely satisfied. Senior Know Chicago The members of the Senior Know Chicago Club are well aware of the fact that their city, although almost in its infancy as cities go, is the fourth largest in the world, and as such is worthy of careful study. These students, all seniors, have developed an active civic pride in studying the history of their city, its great park and boulevard system, its beautiful lake-front, its world-renowned skyscrapers, and its innumerable spots of historical, artistic, and educational interest. Under the sponsorship of Miss Parker and Miss Lati- mer the club visited the Rosenwald Museum during the semester. Hall Guards The chief aim and purpose of the Hall Guard organization is to pro- mote civic pride and to preserve order in the halls at all times. During the past semester these objectives have indeed been reached. The guards have seen that the halls were clean, and with the cooperation of the students have managed to keep them tidy throughout the day. They have also shown the students that they wish to improve the school and thus have merited the respect that is shown their authority. Mr. Strauss, sponsor, feels that when the students of Waller realize that the clean appearance of the building is their responsibility as much as it is the duty of the hall guards, the school will be in perfect order and spirit. ' Page Fifty-three g Qfafez gclwel Yellow and Blue Hear Ye! Hear Ye! This is the picture of the Franklin Yellow and Blue Staff. Rat er a modest looking group considering the work they do! The Editorial Staff does a very good job of editing the various depart- ments and circulating the paper. The Inquiring Reporter, S. Coop, Did You Know? , General School News, and How Much Do You Know? are all columns of the editor's pen. The Salesmen and Room Reporters work tirelessly to keep news up to date and sales high. To these groups, Editorial Staff, Reporters, and Salesmen, we give credit for our Yellow and Blue Brank section of the newspaper, a paper of which the staff and pupils can be proud. Student Council Tl'e Student Council of Franklin Branch was organized in November 1937. There are thirty-two representatives, a boy and a girl from each division room, chosen for excellence in scholarship, good citizenship, and outstanding qualities of leadership. Our Council has taken an active part in the social life of the school, especially in promoting the school dances, which are given three or- four times a semester. Its members have organized a series of dancing lessons in response to numerous requests from pupils who are anxious to learn to dance. It has been responsible for the honor assemblies at the close of each report period and for one to welcome the incoming Freshmen. Its members are to be congratulated on their success in achieving the two principal aims of their organization, the promotion of better school citizenship and the en- couragement of participation in school affairs. Dramatic Club The picture shows the scene in which the climax of Danger at the Door occurs. The play was presented by the Dramatic Club March 25, 1938. Two other plays were given during the semester. Each club member acquired a varied eirperience, not only in acting, but in the mechanics of production as well. Hall Guards One of the points most admired by Franklin visitors, is the eilicient, courteous hall guard system. The boys who act as hall guards have been chosen because of their great dependability, leadership, trustworthiness and general efliciency. With regret we bid farewell to Captain Peter Passiglia and Lieu- tenant Frank Sagona. We thank them for their constant interest in Franklin's welfare and offer our wishes for continued success through life. We feel sure that their choice of next year's captain and lieutenant will be such as will assure us of a continuation of the high standard they have established. Glee Club Franklin music lovers find enjoyment and profit in the Glee Club. The membership is procured by try-outs, which take place each semester. Meetings are scheduled for five time a week, thus affording an accredited music course. This year the Glee Club members took over the production of the Follies. Their insistence on a high standard gave us a most enjoyable show. During the semester a critical attitude, not only for performances heard, but also towards their own, has been developed. We feel that it has been a satisfactory year, and look forward with pleasure, to a continuation of this work when we reach the Main Building. Basketball has a tradition boast- ing of a long and brilliant history of athletic achievement. The teams this year have bettered their record of the past few years due to the splendid cooperation and esprit de corps of the players. The two teams, lights and heavies, have a membership of about twelve and fifteen respectively. These players have been carefully selected from a large number of capable and enthusiastic candidates who will figure next year in place of the gradu- ating members. Outstanding this semester have been Vito Gennusa, heavyg Dick Buzzard and Jack Klein, light. Jack Klein deserves special mention having made the remarkable total of 115 points in eight games. With the promising new material for next semester's players and the thorough training under Coach Kipp, the prospect for Wzlller in next scason's basketball activi- ties looks very bright. CQWS3 Over 72 athletic W's were awarded this semes- ter to members of the Football, Basketball, Fencing and Baseball teams. The awards came after a brilliant and highly successful sports campaign this season. With the exception of the basketball team, the squads are still in their aggressive infancy. The W, a highly-prized symbol of athletic attainment, is earned only by active and diligent par- ticipation on one of the teams. Members of the Base- ball and Basketball teams must play at least two full games, one of them being a winning game. Members of the fencing team, in order to merit a Wi must win a point in the City Meet. The Waller League Baseball Team in its second year at Waller is playing a brand of baseball that sur- passes even that of the first year. Still in its athletic Kun-ling: Thomas Beck, Vito Scimeca, Walter Thornton, Ray Shafer, Ed Dunn, Wil- liam Lydon, Frank Gatto, Joe Esposito, Vern Ream, Fred Barkoo, Henry Haas. Slmnliug: Irving Komsky, Jack Bcscy. Ilnlliugz Vincent Carlino. Calrbing: Vern Ream. Bullingz Frank Gatto. B OYS infancy, our team has rapidly risen to the third place and promises to reach the top in this division by the end of the semester. The pitching staff for this season has consisted of Gene Stumphy and Jack Klein as regulars and Ed Gun- ther as relief. As catcher we had Frank Gatto. Early this semester home runs were hir by John- son and Calivo. Outstanding for their support and offensive have been Johnson, Krupinski and Gatto. The unity of the baseball team this year will not be seriously affected by the graduation. The prospect for next year in baseball is unusu- ally bright as in the case of all the sportsg Waller High School is headed for a bigger and better sport season next year. .. From a small group of enthusiastic students Waller's uniformed R.O.T.C. has increased to one hundred and ten splendidly trained cadets and non-commissioned oflicers under the supervision of Sergeant Ralph Reedy. Considering the short time that this organization has been in Waller, it has made remarkable progress. Its popularity is due not only to the enjoyment the boys receive from belonging to it, but also to its really fine work in building up character and appearance in its members. Besides this the organization accomplishes its fundamental purpose of providing the United States with a trained civilian corps. All of the boys are looking forward eagerly to the opening of the new building next semester. In addition to a rifle range there will be a drill hall and office. During the past semester the R.O.T.C. has been very active. Its activities include a number of parades, a trip to Fort Sheridan, the annual Army Day parade, and the Federal Inspection on May 4 at which twelve of our cadets were awarded medals. rg 5 ' .
