GOOD CITIZEN The title of Salutatorian goes to Frank Crawford for his 3.94 scholastic average. One of Frank's many talents lies in the field of Music. Besides play- ing the bass in the school band and the pep band, he now plays for the University of Michigan Youth Band, the University of Michigan Youth Symphony, and the South Oakland Symphony. Last summer Frank toured Germany with the Michigan Chorale. Frank attends St. George Episcopal Church in Milford. He is the president of the Youth Group and Head Acolyte. Frank participates in many of the extracurricular activities. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Jets, and the Chess Club. He has been a member of the Debate and Dis- cussion teams for three years. Frank is going to the University of Michigan for four years to study chemical engineering as a prerequisite for law which will ex- tend for another three years. Honored by the nomination of her Classmates and the election of the facul- ty was Carol Sommer, this year's D.A.R. Good Citizen, Scholastic ability, service to school and community, dependability, patriotism, and character were the basis of this selection. Carol is accomplished in the field of music. She plays the per- cussion instruments in the band, has taken piano lessons for eight years, and sings in the Westminster Choir at Orchard Lake Community Church. Last Summer she was chosen to represent the United States as an exchange student to Austria. Carol's long brown pony tail is a familiar sight to Walled Lake students, as she has helped cheer Walled Lake's teams to victory for four years. As a member of the Student Council, she was put in charge of pep assemblies for this year. Her activities do not end there. She has served as homeroom officer and Viking Literary Editor as well as being a member of Latin Club, National Honor Society, and G.A.A. Next year Carol will enter the University of Michigan, and plans to major in English. 15 Robert Smlth Louann Pirtle P1-esldent VICE Pres1dent J Siiiiilhlbldeau THE SENIOR CLASS Tiiitsxilrch The class of 59 has had a memorable senior year Senior class officers elected in the early fall Presi dent Bob Smith Nice President Louann Prrtle Secretarw. Besides serving the student body, this organization prepares members to become good future citizens and gives them practical knowledge about democracy. In addition to organizing dances and assemblies, the Student Council this year sponsored two very suc- cessful special events, a variety show, Around the World in Eighty Minutes, and a carnival. This year a new function was added to the Student Council. Students who twice violated school rules were called before the Student t Council to account for their be- havior. By rotating jobs, the student librarians learn how to check out books, how to file and how to assist students with reference work. Skitamard Players, Walled Lake's Dramatic Club, is a very progressive group. Originally it consisted of only a few members who did all things for their art. Today there are so many members that they are able to be divided into scenery painters, make- up artists, and costume designers. The actors and actresses take part not only in their stage rolls but also in the behind-the-scenes activities. Every- one works together to make their pro- ductions the successes they have been. 1 l .i- ' n. A J First row: M. Ketchum, D. Nelson, G. Schimmel, J. Rose, Mrs. Kirk, B. Icso, C Hueston, K. Daly, L. With working trips to St. Joseph's Hospital to help the girls better understand the works and duties of registered nurses, it is no wonder this club really holds the attention of the girls. Reading to the sick, wheel- ing the patients back and forth, fluffing pillows, and doing the 1ittle things help these girls feel the duties, pleasures, trying times, and rewards of being on a regular staff. Meetings frequently include talks by student and graduate nurses. The F.N.A. is designed to give the girls a better knowledge and understanding of the nursing profession. The main function of this or- ganization is to make money for the athletic fund. This they do by selling programs at games, sponsoring dances, and washing cars. From this athletic fund they have contributed an outdoor micro- phone for the football field, some kneebraces, and new scrimmage jerseys. They also paid for the guest speaker at the football banquet. The result of this weakness was a record of 4-4 with a third place 111 the Inter-Lakes Conference, but the Vikings, led by Coach John Koczman, still had a successful season. Highlights of the season were the record smashing performances by several individuals. Frank Fink broke the 100, 2.20, and pole vault records along with running a leg of a record 880 relay team. Along with Tom Phelps, Jim Pierce, and VanderVelde, Proulx 2 34.4 Don Proulx, Fink led the Vikings to the state finals where he finished with a 3rd in pole vault because of a sprained ankle. Tom Phelps, junior speedster, pushed Fink all the way. Jim Pierce, junior dash man, was only defeated once in the 440. Although the Vikings had punch they were weak in the distance runs and the hurdles. With a little back- ing from newcomers the Vikings should come back with another record breaking season.
