1947 VIKING 1947 Team Summary Relying on speed rather tha11 size, the NVallace Bulldogs ended the season with fourteen wins and nine losses. They let the other Little Eight Tour11ey contenders know they were there by winning the 3rd place trophy, being beaten only by the tourney champs, Vienna. ln the District Nine Tourney at VVatertown, they again copped third place and the consolation trophy after bei11g beaten, in an overtime, 26-29, by the champion, Hazel Mustangs, in the semi-finals. In the consolation game, the Wallace boys very handily defeated a strong Castlewood aggrega- tion 29-36. During the season, the team lost two overtime periods and won one, Henry beating them 30-22 and Hazel taking the long e11d, 26-29. Florence lost to NVallace 38-34 in the other close one. The Bulldogs seemed to delight in sending the crowd mad with close scores. Of the 23 games played this year, nine were won or lost by two points or less. We wish those two fine ball-players, Gerald Haugen and Herbert Aasness, a lot of luck as they finish their high school ball playing career. Herbert was All-Conference guard, as was Gerald All-Conference center. Without Gerry to spark us offensively, and Ilerbie to keep the opponents scoring to a minimum, our win-loss record would not have looked very good. However, even though these two are leaving, Wallace has bright prospects for even a better team next year. because of the experienc gained and improve- ment shown this year. IicRoy's fast breaks during the District Tourney had friends and foes alike marvelling at his speed, especially when he shot from o11e side of the floor and then raced over to the opposite corner and 1'ecovered the ball before it touched anything. Guarding was Warren 's strong point. VVith he and Herbert back, the opponents offense bogged down to a standstill. Of course, there were a couple of times at VVatertown when he got over-zealous-his man stopped suddenly and the crowd couldn't tell whether VVarren needed a saddle to stay on better, or a pool of water to land in when he hit. Herbert falls like a big old tree, slow and easy, and about five minutes after the fellow bumps him, Timbe-e-e-c-r-r!! 'tShucks! I should have had a shot on that one, Reff' Gerry really thrilled his rooters whenever he made one of his character- istic swish-shots. How do you do it so nicely and yet consistently? People can't figure out how a Freshman could play such nice cool all- around good basketball. You tell 'em, Freddy. XVhenever a good replacement was needed, one who could take any man's place and do it right, who got the job? You guessed it, Arvid. Norbert was the jinx this year. The Refs were mean to him. You big lug, quit picking on those little guysf' In addition to that, one of his feet wouldn't mind him. Three of the fellows, Norris, Johnny fthe squirtl, and Roger helped the coach retain his sanity during the close 01165. There they are. Add them all up and you'll find a 11ice, clean, ambitious bunch of youngsters that will fight to the finish and a very nice gang to work with. ' 1 3
