Still Grouchy After all this year When I finally sat down and began to think up an inspiring message to share with the readers of this fine publication, the first thought that struck my mind was ‘why?’ Why do people, (especially me), choose to become active in extracurricular activities such as the Student Association and its publications? This was not an easy question to answer. Since I believe in student government, I have chosen to be actively involved. But through my participation I have paid the price academically — as have many others. So why? After all, as my good friend Elaine Blake counseled me with a quote from her grand¬ father, “What difference will it make in a thousand years?” The really disheartening fact is, the con¬ tributions I make today won’t even be remembered 10 years from now. Discouraging as it may seem, it was in this that I found my answer. How can we reach tomorrow except by today? The sacrifices and accomplishments of today’s society are the building blocks of tomor¬ row’s civilizations. What really made a difference to me was the thought of my small input making tomorrow a better day. It’s not im¬ portant whether or not any of us are remembered at WWC ten years from now. What is important is that the contributions we make today will be useful tomorrow and that these acts will always be recognized and appreciated. Where would we be if everyone was primarily interested only in their own success? Would this col¬ lege be what it is today without those who where willing to sacrifice? Let’s look at another example. Summer youth camp employment has been a part of my life for six years now. The pay certainly doesn’t make it the hottest job on earth and the rewards of camp work are few and far between. But there is always the chance and op¬ portunity that a staff member will provide a child with just the love and attention he needs to make an impact on his life that can make a real difference. The case is the same here at Walla Walla College—especially as we are a Christian campus. The events of greatest importance are not the successes or failures of the individual. Neither are congratula¬ tions on a well accomplished Stu¬ dent Association of any lasting value. What is important is that we have been contributors to a better tomorrow and that we have taken advantage of the chance and the opportunity to positively affect other lives. May that always be the goal of each member of this campus both while we are here and as we go our own ways. Randy Thornton Editor Reflections Though the faces, clothing and hairstyles of its inhabitants may have changed over the years, the face of Walla Walla College and the valley surrounding it have essentially remained the same. True, there are new wrinkles and bumps in the old scenery, but even those small changes have failed to remove the familiar expression from the face of Our Valley. The next few pages contain the images of just a few of the faces and places we have all come to know almost as well as our own. The MA staff extends special thanks to Gill Bahnsen, Gary Clendenon, Graham Dorland, the Office of College Relations, Randy Thornton and Verne Wehtje for their contributions in helping us portray a little local color. Our new $3 million Health Education Complex will help us serve thousands more with our popular health education programs ♦ The people at Huguley Hospital have always been committed to a total health care concept that em- phasizes education and prevention. We know that preventing health pro¬ blems is always much better and less costly than curing them after they occur. Since 1977, Huguley Hospitals “Help Yourself To Life” programs have been offered to help people deal with such problems as stress, nutri¬ tion, weight, smoking and much more. These programs have become so popular, we are now expanding our facility to meet the growing demand. Our new 25,000-square-foot Health Education Complex will double the number of programs offered as well as the number of people we can help. In the meantime, our “Help Yourself To Life” programs are being conducted regularly. Call 293-9110, Ext. 240, for information. At Huguley, we’re much more than a hospital. No more sitting through the equivalent of five worships a week. No more lists in the dorm hallway reminding me I’m 12 worships behind. No more wild stampedes at 6:28 p.m. through Foreman lobby, across the skywalk and down the stairs to Conard Chapel . . . just in time to breathlessly slide into a pew and hear, “Now let’s turn to hymn 421 and sing ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful,’ all five verses.” I beat the system! So why do I regret missing Wednesday Inner- notes; the music-oriented worship put together by my classmates and friends? Why do I harken back to hall worships every Thursday night and recall how we flopped into chairs or onto the floor and sang songs or just listened to our R.A. read a story? Sometimes I even catch myself humming a few bars of “All Things Bright and . . . .” Okay, so maybe I haven’t beaten the system. I soon found out that village students are free from worship requirements, but they still have to keep up their chapel attendance. You’d think going to chapel would quell even the faintest nostalgia for religious regimentation. (Who hasn’t com¬ plained about those hour-long sit- in sessions when your stomach growls for lunch and your backside yells for mercy?) To tell the truth ... I actually enjoyed this year’s Tuesday morn¬ ing pilgrimages to the church. Of course there were still times when chapel turned into little more than an escapade of daydream-pass- notes-up-and-down-the-aisle- whisper-to-some-three-rows- ahead-of-you-study-for-the-quiz. But on the whole, Walla Walla College offered us a bumper crop of well-prepared, interesting presentations. I know this because every time I skipped chapel, someone would give me rave reviews on it, usually concluding with a remark like, “You should’ve been there!” Once you’ve heard that statement enough you begin to believe it, and your whole perspective changes. So you see, there really is no way to beat the system. WWC’s religious activities and opportunities reach out to me (and you) at every level of our college existence. Our ASWWC spiritual vice presidents, Mark Ranzinger and Karl Haffner, were always plan¬ ning something to get us involved . . . from events simple as a prayer breakfast in the SAC to Bible Con¬ ferences at Camp Wooten to the fall quarter Community Work Day. On that day, roughly 70 students laid aside their books and their Sunday laundry to rake leaves in two of the area’s parks, clean and tidy up a crisis counseling center in Walla Walla and conduct some outside work at the Veterans Hospital. Spring or summer, day or night, the spire of the College Church (left) serves as a land¬ mark that draws faculty, students and community members alike under the all- encompassing shadow of his love. Augustine Chukuma, WWC ' s foremost blind musi¬ cian (below), lifts his praise at a vespers service. Mountain Ash 19 religion Looking back on the year, Ran- zinger says, “Our theme was, ‘Love is . . . We wanted students to become more aware of loving their neighbors. I don’t know whether or not that goal was realized, but I feel we planted a seed. In this type of job, you don’t often see results because they develop slowly. So sometimes you wonder if the seed will ever grow. You just have to believe that it will.” Ranzinger and Haffner were not alone in sowing seeds this year. Forty WWC students left their motherland and traveled to places like Japan, Nepal, the Marshall and Caroline Islands, Egypt, Greece, Hong Kong and Australia to spend the next nine to 12 months as student missionaries. Most of them taught English and Bible. However, SMs also go abroad to answer the need for tutors, elementary school teachers, assistant pastors, assistant deans, builders and even farmers. And while the SMs were gone, Jeanette Wagner and Myron Ise- minger, directors for student mis¬ sions, reminded us to think of our SM friends. They wrote the names of the SMs on air mail letters, left the blank pages taped onto tables in the cafeteria (or other sites) and encouraged us to write a word or two. Often the letters were mailed with writing crammed onto every available bit of space from students who just wanted to say hello. Thanks to this, the packages and the Collegians that Wagner and Iseminger sent, SMs felt a little closer to home. In addition to our Student Mis¬ sionaries, ten taskforce workers were scattered across the continen¬ tal U.S. to work in much the same capacity as their fellow students abroad ... as assistant deans, assistant pastors, librarians, elementary school teachers, medical assistants, etc. . . . Debbie Stentzel took respon¬ sibility for keeping taskforce workers in touch with the latest campus excitement. Apparently, news from WWC meant as much to the taskforce students as it did to SMs, at least according to a worker who wrote the Collegian: “I have spent six months in the mission fields of Montana and every letter from home (WWC) is enough to blur my vision for a minute .... Sure, the job is rewarding and the ‘natives’ fun to get to know, but there is nothing like hearing from the people who populate the campus of Walla Walla College.” The SM and taskforce programs are branches of Campus Ministries, as are the Adopt-A-Grandparent, Big Brother Big Sister programs and the Collegiate Adventist for Better Living (CABL). Becky Hughes, student director for CM, worked closely with Chaplain DeHaven throughout the year. Together they worked with in¬ dividual program directors to keep things running smoothly. More directly reponsible for coordinating the Adopt-A- Grandparent program were Mike Lambert and Jayne LaChapelle. Lambert reports that student par¬ ticipation was high during the first of the year, reached its peak at the Christmas banquet which hosted 60 to 70 guests and tended to decline as the year progressed. Big Brother Big Sister also needs more student support, ac¬ cording to Eric Molander, co¬ director for the program with Vicky Ringering. He estimates that 30 students participated in the pro¬ gram, “which doesn’t really cover the amount of potential kids we have.” Molander feels that Big Brother Big Sister has more potential than most college 20 Mountain Ash religion students realize. “It’s a chance to get away from things and spend time with a kid who looks up to you ... to pro¬ vide a positive role model that shows Christianity is a good way of life.” Brett Robinson and Darla Grabow directed the CABL pro¬ gramming this year. That is to say, they concerned themselves with a myriad of activities aimed at help¬ ing students live healthier lives. Since students notoriously misuse and abuse their minds and bodies, especially during dead week and final exams, it’s clear that CABL has a ready-made niche for itself within the campus community (and a long, hard job ahead). Speaking of long, hard jobs, let’s not forget the week-of-spiritual- emphasis speakers. I’ve heard en¬ thusiastic praise for Ray Tetz’s fall quarter presentations. Looking at some of his sermon titles for the week, “30,000 Reasons To Go Home,” “The Rubble Strategy,” “Christianity For The Complete Klutz,” gives you a feel for his sense of humor and knack for holding on audiences rapt at¬ tention. I’ve also heard positive remarks about winter quarter’s special week presented by our own students. Roving reporter that I am, I ac¬ costed a total stranger in the cafeteria line and asked her what she thought. Her answer: “The students seemed to be really honest and natural and their topics were good ... in expressing their different views on love.” An entertaining and meaningful speaker for fall quarter, a series of thoughtful and sincere sermons for winter quarter and Des Cummings, Jr. in the spring . . . what more could we ask for? We certainly couldn’t have asked for a greater variety of Vespers programs because when it came to Friday evening meetings, everyone had their turn - CABL, OPS, ASWWC, Presi¬ dent Sorenson, the band, the choir, Portland Campus, Village Club, Campus Ministries, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and many more. Name someone and they probably gave a Vespers service. Wintley Phipps, the baritone who sang for the Democratic Na¬ tional Convention in San Fransciso? Yes, we’ve had him here. How about Nielson and Young, the renowned pianists? You bet. They came toward the first of the year. Lyle Jensen (far left) tests a tune on Karl Haffner during Bi¬ ble camp at Camp Wooten. Crackerjack storyteller Edwards (left) spellbinds a vespers au¬ dience with yet another hear- and-learn tale. Josephine Cunnington Ed¬ wards, beloved story-teller (and author of Swift Arrow, one of my favorite childhood books)? Oh yes, she’s been here too. After Vespers there was always Afterglow. Some of the songs changed this year, as they always do. Afterglow leaders came and went, as they always will. But the warmth of fellowship and guitar chords remained. So you see, no matter which way we turned this year, we were part of the system . . . mainly because the system is not limited to mandatory chapel attendance and a certain number of worship cards. It includes all sorts of other religious activities in which we take part voluntarily . . . such as Campus Ministries, prayer break¬ fasts, Vespers, Sabbath School, Church .... There really is no way to beat the system, and why should I want to? It’s one of the best ones around. Mountain Ash 21 Playing the Games: WWC’s Big Leagues by Ben Cawthra Whether it was stretching out for a pass, running miles in the rain, straining to press those five extra pounds, leaping for a rebound, or just sitting and observing the drama before us, 1984-85 at Walla Walla College was a year in which just about everyone got involved in some serious (and nonserious) sporting. Who could have predicted the tremendous participation in in¬ tramurals, the FCA football team using real thigh pads, or the fanatic intensity of the Sonnenberg Games? To both the new student and the veteran, the year was a treat. Flagball again kicked off the in¬ tramural season, ending up with 26 teams in four leagues. After the newness of the season wore off, the cold quickly set in. There were few players indeed who were brave (foolish?) enough to play second half of the season in shorts. Despite the early cold wave, the fans who shivered on the sidelines took in some sharp flagball. What is it that makes flagball so much fun? Surely it couldn’t be the cleat marks on one’s body after a game .... The intramural program hosted an event designed for those with an unsatisfied desire for pain. The Ironman Team Triathlon was held once a quarter. In the fall, swim¬ ming, biking and running were the sections, while cross-country skiing took the place of biking in the winter. Those who chose to enter the Ironman and do all three were examined before and after the event for head injuries. Besides the thigh pads, FCA got their own song a new volleyball program in the spring. Touring was on the increase this year as the Christian Athletes represented Walla Walla all over the Northwest. The flagball and basketball teams flourished, and besides the volley¬ ball, several individual track and field meets were hosted by the FCA team in the spring. Basketball is big here at Walla Fall sports lacked neither dampness nor determination. Our non-varsity Canucks (above) slid through yet another chill-packed season. Walla, and this year was no excep¬ tion. In addition to the hours on Sunday spent playing rat ball in the gym, the intramural program pro¬ vided plenty of opportunity for hoop stardom. Operating again with four leagues, the jumpers, re¬ bounds, passes, steals, and yes, fouls went on for most of the winter. The 1985 Sonnenberg Games were, without a doubt, the most exciting event of winter quarter on campus and one of the year’s highlights. The village — versus — Mountain Ash 23 sports dorm rooting sections were every bit as competitive as the players on the hardwood. Throughout the cheers of “Tastes Great!” and “Less Filling!” the Village and OPS teams went into double-overtime in Game One before Village took it. They went on to win the series, 2-1, and break the 14-14 deadlock in the trophy matches. On the women’s side, Conard swept to victory over Foreman-Village in two decisive games. Basketball is not the only winter sport here at Walla Walla, however. Canuck fans will be the first to remind you. The hockey team made several endurance-test road trips and had a sizable follow¬ ing all year. They even broke new ice by training a unskateworthy sports reporter as a goalie. If the Ice Chalet were just a little bigger .... Speaking of bigger, skiing is more popular than ever. A huge throng journeyed to Anthony Lakes for the ASWWC Snow Frolic and were treated to sunshine and great skiing. Reportedly, however, there were more people limping and walking gingerly after¬ ward than at any time in school history. Of course, Spout Springs and Bluewood were much fre¬ quented. For the people who like their hockey any way they can get it, gym hockey on foot was a welcome diversion. Knee pads were in high demand. The reflexive cerebral sport, Col¬ lege Bowl, was won by a bunch of supposed surfers, members of King Kamehameha Club. Their multi¬ colored eye-popping Hawaiian at¬ tire was probably a distraction to their opponents. They capped an undefeated season by defeating the Collegian in the finals. Windsurfing, one of the fastest- growing sports in the United States, began to make an impres¬ sion this year. It didn’t matter that College Place is in the middle of the wheat belt. Another beach-type sport, volleyball, was played indoors, resulting another run on knee pads. Sports suppliers smiled this year. Before winter quarter had ended, the sun was shining and hundreds had taken to the golf courses. It did not matter that there were studies; nothing mattered but getting the swing back and the game in gear. There was tourna¬ ment play in the spring, but even this did not quench the ever¬ present desire to whack the daylights out of a golf ball. Golf’s more vigorous sidekick, tennis, was in swing before the temperature reached 50 degrees. Playing tennis in high winds became a fascinating sport in its own right. Of course, winter racquet games were limited to racquetball and some table tennis, but that was just fine with the year-round racquet- ball patrons. Those wall-climbing fanatic types are the ones who use the game as a daily outlet for frustration, and in their blind aban¬ don, give no quarter. Beware the serious racquetballer who has been denied this comforter for more than three days. When grass becomes greener and spring quarter has begun, young men’s and women’s thoughts inevitably turn to National Pastime. Those who could hit and put trust in the pitchers played baseball. That’s right, the real man’s ball, bat, and glove game. There is something slow about baseball that appeals to a crowd. Perhaps it is because it is easy to carry on a conversation at a ball game. At any rate, baseball was a force this year. The softballers had plenty of fun in the sun too. The crowds prob¬ ably didn’t have as much, mainly because softball is much more fun to play than to watch. Soccer enthusiasts had the pleasure of playing in or watching the College Cup in the fall. Village bested Dorm in this one, too. The intramural soccer program was played out in the spring, and came complete with cleat marks, bruised shins and like maladies, that didn ' t end with the organized games, but spilled onto Friday afternoons and Sundays as well. Soccer players are generally known for their aban¬ don and toughness though. I’m just glad I didn’t play. Then there are the solitary sports figures. The runners who. day after 24 Mountain Ash sports day, punish themselves into good shape and good health. The very serious runner is rarely seen, however. This is the person who runs in the early hours while all is calm, all is bright. If “punish” can be used with the joggers, “torture” must be ascribed to the weightlifters. These people must hurt so bad that they simply can’t feel it anymore. Weightlifting got a shot in the arm with the opening of Sittner Health Club. It seems as if just about everyone “worked out” at some time this year. There is another solitary breed. The Six O’Clock Swimmer. One of the truly amazing feats on this campus must be getting up and making the trip to the pool at 6 a.m. every monring. Can anyone explain it? I think that covers just about the whole crowd of them. But what about all those events that weren’t held? What about the Sittner-to- Foreman Hot Air Balloon Race? Speaking of races, how about the College Place-Portland-Seattle- College Place Cannonball Run? There’s got to be a record on that somewhere. If you think that’s all a bit racy, then we’ll stick to the standards around here. They’re not half bad. Fall golf season (far left) was lamentably short but the ad¬ vent of good weather and spring golf classes brought about a remarkable resurgence in the sport. Under Coach Windemuth ' s leadership, in¬ tramurals (left) tookyet another step forward in both organiza¬ tion and participation. Son- nenberg ' 85 (below) boasted t-shirts, concession stands, private cheering sections, rabid fans and bloodthirsty (literally) gamesmanship, on the road to a Village victory. Mountain Ash 25 The Brain Trust: A Growing Pain by Sherry Wachter academics Academics: who — or what — are they? How, and by whom, are they made? For most people, or at least most of the people I asked, the word “academic” conjures up visions of intellectual school standards. Often, the standards were viewed negatively, as in “It’s purely academic,” or unnecessarily fussy. For others, the words “academic” primarily applies to aging pro¬ fessors of history at big universities. For me, “academic” means some¬ one who has thin, floating white hair who translates classical literature. Contrary to popular concep¬ tions, academics are usually made, not born. Very few people come into this world as wrinkled scholars fluent in ancient languages. If this is the case, then, how are academics made? They are made with money. With very few exceptions, reputable colleges are not charity institutions. Those who wish to at¬ tend must somehow amass a cer¬ tain sum of filthy lucre which, at the beginning of each quarter, is handed over to Student Accounts. The first step to becoming academic, then, is to get money. Here at Walla Walla College, this Like all finer institutions of higher learning, ours is sup¬ ported by several pillars— among the foremost a fine faculty, loyal alumni, money, and ivy. Lots of ivy. Sometimes study (right) goes beyond books and the library. is generally done in four ways. First, (and it generally is the first one tried) the prospective student asks Mum and or Dad to support him in his intellectual endeavors. If Mum and Dad are average, they say they’ll do their best, but they’re not made of money. The amount that they propose to contribute often falls short of both the stu¬ dent’s hopes and the full rate of tuition. In all fairness to Mum and Dad, it must be noted that tuition at Walla Walla is considerable, and getting more so all the time. Ac¬ tually, it’s a wonder that more Mums and Dads aren’t giving up altogether, telling their children to either find their own way to college or else be happy pumping gas. Once the student-to-be has ac¬ cepted the fact that his parents will not be supporting him through col¬ lege, he is free to look around for other ways of getting money. He may fill out a basic grant form which, if he qualifies, will allow him to get either government aid or else work study. He may apply for the various scholarships and en¬ dowments available around campus. Or, as a last resort, he may apply for a job. Jobs come in two varieties: On- campus and Off-campus. Each group has special advantages. For instance, off-campus jobs tend to pay more than on-campus jobs, and the student gets the actual cash in his hand, rather than just a credit on his bill. However, on-campus jobs can be arranged around a dif¬ ficult class schedule, and Christmas break. For the dormitory student, on-campus jobs present less transportation problems. One additional resource that should not be overlooked is God. According to Cassie Ragenovich, director of Student Accounts and Employment, many students receive money as a direct answer to prayer, often from people they do not even know. Most students use some com¬ bination of the four financial sources to get themselves through school. With the proposed budget cuts in Congress, students will have to rely more heavily on sources other than government aid. However, the cuts — if passed — will not go into effect before the Mountain Ash 27 academics 1986-87 school year, so the pro¬ spective academic still has some time to arrange other financial support. After money, the second re¬ quirement needed to become an academic is scholastic standing. This is the aspect of the word “academic” that most students identified. If one wishes to attend college — become academic — one must take a few classes. Classes involve tests. To pass tests, one must generally study. In fact, the necessity of studying looms like a dark cloud over the life of the student. Some students, often freshmen in their first quarter, ignore this cloud, blissfully ignorant of its threat. They discover the meaning of the cloud during Dead Week of the first quarter, when they try to make up all the work that has been “sliding” all quarter. If they are to continue in their academic career, they quickly learn to discipline themselves. This is probably the most important thing that the con¬ tinuing student learns in his first quarter of college. The second most important thing that he learns is that Walla Walla College has an exemplary Teaching Learning Center, which provides tutors for both “drop-in” — or emergency — tutoring, and “private” — or long-range plan¬ ning — tutoring. This service is free. Most students employ the ser¬ vices of a tutor at some point in their college career, usually to help them over some particularly rough assignment. With these two tools, the average student can cope with the average class. When the student gets farther on in his academic career, he acquires other concerns, like whether the classes he needs will be offered at a time when he can take them? Students on a relatively small campus like WWC find this to be more of a problem than do students on a larger campus, where a greater number of classes are offered. For students in a small program on a small campus — like the students taking Speech Pathology — budget cuts may not only limit class offerings, but also totally eradic ate the major. If the student chooses to take an uncommon major, he must learn to organize himself, taking classes that are not likely to be offered again soon, and leaving more conventional classes to be taken later. The student who wants to become an academic must learn to organize himself. Although the average student is pretty well occupied between fill¬ ing his financial and sholastic obligations, he has yet another responsibility. He must keep himself mentally fit. Students do this in a variety of ways. Some par¬ ticipate in organized activities, like College Bowl, Sonnenberg Games, Saturday night programs, and banquets. Others prefer to resuscitate themselves in more per¬ sonal activities, like running, swim¬ ming, recreational reading, weight-lifting, bowling, dating, talk¬ ing, and going to McDonald’s (for shakes and fries). No matter which path is chosen, the student who seriously plans to become an academic realizes that he will not be taken seriously if his mailing ad¬ dress is a mental home, and takes steps to prevent this. The student who wants to become an academic must learn to balance his activities. For some, however, attending Walla Walla College is not an in¬ tellectual affair, but a social one. All the jokes made about “going to college to get married” tend to belittle the student who does this. This prevents the student who primarily wants to find a Christian spouse from acknowledging his The practical end of educa¬ tion is covered here as well— as exemplified in this painstak¬ ing reproduction (left) of the Bayeaux tapestry. Purely academic pursuits are sup¬ ported by the best and fastest growing, library (right) in Col¬ lege Place. 28 Mountain Ash academics real goal. The sheer practicality of attending college as a means of find¬ ing an ambitious, educated spouse who will one day enter the work force at a higher wage rate is often overlooked. Consequently, the student spends a great deal of time taking classes that do not further this ambition. Fart of becoming an academic is honestly evaluating one’s goals. Degrees are nice things to get after spending a long time in college; I hope for one myself. However, if the student really isn’t as interested in getting a degree as he is in finding a mate, he should devote a greater propor¬ tion of time to social functions than he would if he was primarily interested in getting a degree. No matter what reason the potential academic may have for coming to college, he must honestly evaluate his goals, and then work toward Suppose, now, that the student has accrued enough wealth to come to, and stay in, college. Sup¬ pose also that he has organized himself, become acquainted with his resources, has developed a balanced lifestyle, has evaluated his goals and worked toward them, and has now graduated, a full- fledged academic. What now? That depends on what his goals are. The process of education is, after all, to prepare the student for future life. One’s academic career is only a means to an end. The whole point of college is to broaden the student’s options. If, after however many years of college you choose to take, you choose to go back to your hometown and clean restrooms in gas stations, you will still have benefited from col¬ lege. Chances are, you will have chosen your job because of some merit you saw in it, not because it was all you were qualified for. Although you may not be working logarithms, writing term papers, and masterminding chemical ex¬ plosions in your line of work, you will still be able to apply the prin¬ ciples of finance, discipline, organization, resource use, and balance that saw you through col¬ lege. You will be academic. Mountain Ash 29 Ufe After Hours at W ' WC by Curt Dewees Within the sometimes stifling at¬ mosphere of a student’s academic life there can always be found some form of release for a needed change of pace. Campus Ministries, the ASWWC, several other campus clubs a nd special interest groups devote great time and ef¬ fort in providing such opportunities for these much needed escapes. Special events like the annual Snow-Frolic at Anthony Lakes, allow normally sane and studious members of the stu¬ dent body to eat a little snow and blitz the bindings right out of their rented skis. activities Remember all the fun we had this year? We had some good times, did we not? Yet, in this diverse world of ours, everyone has their own opinion about what “fun” really is. What might be considered to be more fun than a barrel of monkeys by one student may not even rate a bucket of baboons for another. So what right have I to put myself on a pedestal of personal pref¬ erence and tell you about the social activities that we have all experienced this year together? Virtually none. That is why I have invited Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert to discuss the social events of 1984-85 here at WWC and share their opinions. Both men are successful entertain¬ ment critics for prominent Chicago newpapers and now have their own weekly half-hour TV show. Roger, Gene, we’re glad to have you with us today. Siskel: Thanks for inviting us, Curt. I know I’m glad to be here and I’m sure Roger is too. Ebert: Yes, I am, Gene. You know, at first I had some misgiv¬ ings about coming to a college whose name repeated itself, but now that I’m here — well, let’s just say that it’s nice to know that there is still a lot of talent and imagina¬ tion on c ollege campuses across America. From what I have seen so far I can see that the students of Walla Walla College have a lot — Siskel: Excuse me, Roger, I don’t mean to interrupt here, but think it would be best to skip the formalities and just get on with this. These kids have shelled out a lot of money for their annual and I think they’re eager to hear what we have to say. Ebert: You’re right, Gene. First of all I think we should start with a discussion of the ASWWC Car¬ nival that was held to welcome everyone back to college. This was the first social event of the year and it was definitely top-notch enter¬ tainment. Just take a look at the booths. Games. Prizes. Free pop. My goodness, they even had a live Dixieland jazz band. Siskel: Yes, the band was great and the night-time fireworks at the end of the carnival were spec¬ tacular, too, but personally, Roger (and I’m not saying this to offend anyone), I think we have to go back to the Freshman Swim Party at Tausick Memorial Pool to find the first social activity of the year. Ebert: What do you mean? The carnival was first. Siskel: That’s true for most students, Roger, but the freshmen and new students were on campus a full weekend before registration. The swim party Sunday night broke the ice for a lot of kids who were feeling nervous about enter¬ ing college for the first time. We saw people swimming, people div¬ ing, people everywhere having a good time. Even Thane Plummer, the Student Association President, entered a diving contest. Ebert: Yes, and Ben Cawthra, young turk that he is, won the belly-flop contest with an abdominal-smashing freefall from the high dive. Gene, the guy was amazing in his role as a sucidal pearl diver. Cash prizes do amaz¬ ing things to people on this campus. Siskel: I agree with you there, Roger. Moving on, we come to the Road Rally. Really an amazing event, the timing couldn’t have been better. Great weather. The sun was shining and there was fresh, hot pizza afterwards from several local pizza parlors. Ebert: Yes, the Road Rally itself was magnificent and the planning was excellent as well. Who could Mountain Ash 31 activities Lorand Wolfe and sister. Celeste, (above) wow the OPS Amateur Hour audience with a number that could only be termed classic. Late Night entertainment, a la WWC in the form of the ASWWC Audi¬ tion, resurrected such old crowd favorites as Tetz and Gerber (right), Earl and Mohr—as well as jokes that were a great deal older. have known that a local back-yard vigilante would take the box of prizes and turn it in to the College Place police — or that the police would declare rallying a felony? Siskel: You’re right, Roger. They had no way of knowing and I think that’s was makes this scene so comical. I’m giving the Road Rally a definite ‘thumbs up’. Ebert: Same here. I liked it because I think the kids really en¬ joyed racing about in cars and get¬ ting some fresh air. The next big event was on Halloween weekend with the ASWWC “House of Seven Parties.” What we’re deal¬ ing with here is the Administration building physically altered to resemble a haunted house. Now, the Ad building is frightening enough in the daylight, but can you imagine the suspense of that five-story architectural monstrosity with all of its endless winding cor¬ ridors and staircases to nowhere filled with hay bales, headless monsters, bats tied to the ceiling and free candy? Siskel: I think “Scary” is the word you’re looking for. Don’t forget that we are talking about not just one event, but seven, that’s right, count ’em, seven parties go¬ ing on at the same time. Really an amazing effort in the horror genre. Ebert: Yes. Unfortunately, some of the reviews we heard from par¬ ticipants were just as frightening. Moving on, I think we should men¬ tion OPS Amateur Hour. Here, we had everything from little kids slob¬ bering melted ice cream down their shirts on videotape, to live stage show starring Roger Walter as a purple people-eater. Siskel: For me, the stars of OPS, were the guys in the bluegrass band. They won the competition hands down and it’s that kind of 32 Mountain Ash activities raw musical talent that put them on the road to commercial success. Ebert: And you know, Roger, it wasn’t long before we saw that same band again in another foot- stomping, knee-slapping hoedown performance at the ASWWC Wild West banquet. Siskel: I just have to say that even though country music is not my favorite, I did have a great time at this particular banquet. There was good, home-on-the-range, ranch style cookin’, a big stage complete with hay bales, red and white checked tablecloths and I swear, you never saw so many cowboys and cowgirls together in one place. Ebert: The movie after the ban¬ quet created quite a sensation too. They somehow got Walt Disney’s recent Never Cry Wolf past the screening committee and into Village Hall. I was amazed at the number of ways that the movie’s central character had dreamed up for eating mice. Mice stew, mice sandwiches — Siskel: I gave Never Cry Wolf a thumbs up because of its hilarious brand of Yukon humor. I loved the part where he’s trying to thaw out a frozen bottle of beer, and also where he marks his territory so the wolves won’t bother him. Ebert: I knew you’d bring that up. Moving on to another banquet, we find that the girls club spon¬ sored one called “In the Royal Manner” and the ARA dining hall was completely transformed for Mountain Ash 33 activities this occasion into something truly magnificent. Siskel: Yes, I saw the banners, the castle walls, the Green Forest as you walked into the banquet. This one gets my vote for the best decorated banquet. Of course, the best banquet food has to go the French Club banquet held a week later. Their “Une Soiree a Paris” was catered completely by Mer¬ chant’s Restaurant of Walla Walla. Ebert: The translation for that is u An Evening in Paris” for those of you who are wondering. Siskel: Thanks, Roger. As I was saying, the French Club banquet gets the best-food award and also I would have to give it the best serv¬ ice award. Everything at this ban¬ quet was served by waiters dressed to the nines. It really added to the continental atmosphere. Ebert: Gene, you’re forgetting that there were only a hundred or so attending that banquet. You just can’t compare a small banquet like that to something as big as the Wild West bash. Siskel: OK, since we can’t agree on banquets, let’s move on to another popular activity this year — skiing. Ebert: It all started on November 15, 1984. That was the night of the Warren Miller Ski movie. Miller Time as it is commonly known, merited two big shows, one at 6:00 and one at 8:30. The crowds poured in to watch this incredible motion picture that featured not only skiing, but also water skiing, sailing and helicopter rides. Siskel: Several local sports shops set up booths in the gym and gave away door prizes, including a free season lift pass to Bluewood. War¬ ren Miller proved to be just the beginning because during winter quarter another ski movie aired, this one called Twenty Years of Skiing. Ebert: Gene, I think we agree that of the two ski movies, Warren Miller was definitely better. Not only was Twenty Years about that much out of date, but it spent far too much time on other sports like rafting to really be called a serious ski movie. Siskel: I’m with you here, Roger, and it’s too bad that all movies are not equally well made, but then 34 Mountain Ash activities again, if that happened, you and I wouldn’t have anything to talk about. Ebert: Seriously though, one thing the ski movies did accomplish was to set the mood for Snow Frolic day, which hit on Wednes¬ day, February 6. Hundreds of students made it up to Anthony for a day of sun, snow and good, clean fun. Siskel: It was a good day of ski¬ ing for many, except the hot- doggers that had to be hauled off the slopes in stretchers. Ebert: I don’t know, Gene. The way those guys talk, Snow Frolic was so much fun, it was worth the broken leg. At least now they have plenty of time to watch television. Siskel: And what better place to watch TV than in the Student Association Center, now equipped with a big-screen TV. Ebert: That TV has seen a lot of use since its unveiling at the Super Bowl party in January. Another big video party was on election night ’84 when Ronald Reagan scored 49 out of 50 states and another four years in the White House. Afterwards, we stayed on to watch Mr. T absolutely demolish hood¬ lums on “The A-Team.” Siskel: Let it not be said that ASWWC is not interested in politics. Many free cookies and punch were consumed on that night, I can tell you. But the event that impressed me the most was not the Election night party, nor the Super Bowl party, but The Audition. I was stunned at the kinds of talent that WWC students have to work with. We saw solos, duets, instrumentals, jazz, classical, humor — Ebert: Gene, I’ll have to admit that my favorite act at The Audi¬ tion was the special guest ap¬ pearance by the Nuclear Rhythm Band. It’s too bad that the hosts of the show, Gary Tetz and Bill Gerber, happened to be offstage when the band played. Siskel: Roger, I think there is something you should know — Ebert: Don’t interrupt me again, Gene. I’m convinced that the Nuclear Rhythm Band is on the cutting edge of neo-Eurythmics sound. They are a hot group. These guys could make it big. Siskel: OK, Roger, let’s move on to other social events of the year. I’m sure that everyone out there wants to hear about the movies they showed at the Midnight Breakfast during finals week, winter quarter? The Blue Mtn. Mountain Ash 35 student life Remember: Wherever You Go, There You Are by Dan Kaempff WWC students don’t need an organ¬ ized activity to escape from the drudges of a week of study. Life-beyond-school is often most sucessful when it simply removes itself as far from College Place as possible. Taking a break, both on and off campus, is a necessity for student sanity. Andy Arm¬ strong and Cindy Diede (top, right) find a moment between classes to say ' Hi. ' Emad Deeb (right) shows off for the camera—and anyone else will¬ ing to watch. student life No one will deny that Walla Walla College is just in fact that, a college. And of course, the only thing that happens at a college is serious, intense study, right? Wrong, Buckwheat. Most students are rather adept at finding things to amuse them in their spare time. A few of the ultra- talented can even find things with which to amuse themselves during their study time. However, this kind of activity has the expected side effects. Just what do college students do with their spare time? Depending on which gender you talk to, one of the most popular activities either is or isn’t dating. Dates can consist of something as simple as a walk in the evening or as expensive as dinner at the Homestead. It’s funny though, the best dates are often the ones in which you don’t spend a Fort Knox of money, but just do something fun together like ice skating or a picnic in the K-Mart parking lot. The typical dating scenario goes something along these lines: Scene: Typical college guy in typical college dorm room, dialing phone and sweating a lot. Phone starts ringing and on the third ring, is answered. Girl: Hello. Guy: Umm . . . ahh ... is this Karen (or whoever)? Girl: No, it isn’t. Just a minute, I’ll get her. Muffled sounds come through the phone as our hero sweats some more. Girl 2 (Karen): Hello. Guy (trying to sound suave and not cutting it): Karen? Hi. This is Ralph. Karen: Ralph who? Ralph: Ralph Jones. From biology class. Third row back, on the far left side. Karen: Oh sure. I remember you now. Ralph: How’s it goin’? (In¬ telligent ice breaker, that line is) Karen (suspicions aroused): Oh, pretty good. How are you? Ralph (anticipation building and sweat really rolling): Fine, thanks. Say, I was wondering if I, I mean you, were busy Saturday night? Karen (smiling to herself): No. What did you have in mind? Ralph: Well, there’s an in¬ teresting lyceum, The Ro yal Chim¬ panzee Circus of The People’s Republic of Togo, at the gym and I was wondering if you’d like to go with me? Karen: That sounds like fun. I’d Mountain Ash 37 student life love to. Ralph: Really? Oh, I mean, great. O.K., I’ll see you then. Karen: Ralph? Ralph: Yes. Karen: What time will you pick me up? Ralph: Oh (laughs nervously). About seven. Is that all right? Karen: Sure. That’s fine. Ralph: Well, have a good evening. Karen: You too. ’Bye. Ralph: G’night. In spite of Ralph’s rather shaky query, he and Karen did go to the Royal Chimpanzee . . . etc. and had a very good time. They found out they both hate biology, higher primates, and rainstorms; love but¬ ter brickie ice cream, ’69 Camaro Z-28s, and the color blue. And so was the start of a very good friendship. But there are other activities at WWC besides dating to keep the fun-loving student amused. And some of the best activities take place right in the dorms. •This past year, a popular ac¬ tivity in Sittner East was the late- night fifth-floor tackle football game. Occupants of the bottom floor were easy to identify by their odd assortment of carpet burns and bruised heads from close en¬ counters with walls and doorknobs. No one was hurt seriously and it proved an excellent way to blow off some excess steam. •Toward the end of winter quarter, some fun-loving engineer¬ ing majors on the top floor of Sitt¬ ner East declared general war on the whole campus and anyone who dared walk past their window was usually greeted with a generous helping of cold water dumped from above. •Impromptu pizza parties were the rule, not the exception for all the dorms this year. 522-0011 was one phone number that every stu¬ dent knew by heart and practi¬ cally every night of the week, delivery people dressed in Not all out-of-class hours are spent sunning and funning. Don Wade (below) enjoys himself while adding a few dollars to his school-bill. Extra time can also be spent as Dar¬ ren Brisco (bottom) demon¬ strates , as he tunefully waits for his date...and waits...and waits. A leisurely Sabbath after¬ noon hike (right) at a nearby national park is a nice alter¬ native to on-campus activities. 38 Mountain Ash student life somewhat tacky blue and orange costumes could be seen in any dorm lobby you cared to look in, at any hour. Another always-popular sport was merely sitting on the lawns along College Avenue and, under the guise of studying, watching the world go by. Countless hours have been spent in care-free socializing this way. Yet, it wasn’t considered a waste of time by most. A major part of life at college is a phenomena known as the road trip. Whether it’s an afternoon jaunt to Spokane, or a weekender to Seattle or Portland, life on the asphalt is a very real part of col¬ lege. Every Friday, students can be seen piling into a variety of cars and taking off for home, a friend’s home, or just taking off. Just slip Springsteen into the Sony and you’re on your way. Some of the more daring at¬ tempt to see how fast a certain trip can be made. For instance, Col¬ lege Place to Portland can be done in three hours under the right con¬ ditions. Those conditions include foregoing the usual stop for a tostada at the Taco Bell in The Dalles, having a rather dependable microwave-receiving device (radar detector), having no qualms about driving 80 mph, and traveling under the cloak of night (fewer Smokies, eh?). Some who have attempted this feat a bit too many times are on familiar terms with the local con¬ stabulary. For instance, yours truly is great buddies with Officer Hill who hangs out between The Dalles and Hood River. Every time I pass him, it seems, he turns on the pretty red and blue lights on top of his white Chevrolet Impala and pulls me over to say hi and give me one of his pretty yellow invitations to see him in court. Nice guy, that Officer Hill is. Just wish he’d turn on his X-band so I’d know when he was around instead of sneaking up behind me and scaring me in the dead of night. If you’d rather not deal with the nice policemen on the Oregon side of the river, there’s always the Washington route. It’s a bit longer, timewise, but infinitely safer if your driving record isn’t quite sterling, as the Washington State Patrol doesn’t seem to put a lot of man¬ power along Route 14, day or night. Probably the one thing that ap¬ plies to all student life is the fact that practically anything goes. It is im¬ possible to predict what students here are going to come up with to entertain themselves and their friends. That’s what makes life at college so much fun. Mountain Ash 43 44 Mountain Ash administration Sorensen by Linda Masden Graduates weren’t the only ones packing to leave WWC in June this year. So was the president. Late in January President N. Clifford Sorensen announced his decision to become the executive secretary of the SDA Board of Higher Education in Washington, D. C., ending his nine-year term as WWC chief executive officer. Sorensen, a 1958 WWC alum¬ nus (B.S., zoology), joined the education department in 1972, and became president four years later after Grady Smoot reneged on his original acceptance. “My door will be open to any students as long as I am here,” he promised students. And it was. As long as he was in town. Several memorable trips stand out in the Sorensen presidency. Only a year into his presidency he boarded a jet to the Democratic Republic of Yemen. His two-week stint in the Bedouin country was sponsored by the United Nations, who needed an educational con¬ sultant who knew something about boarding schools. In 1979 the president met The President, Jimmy Carter, at home in D.C. The two men, who look remarkably similar, talked for about 10 minutes. “He was much shorter than I expected,” Sorensen later commented. Amy was one set of the Bible Stories richer for the visit. Part of one summer he spent touring Finland with The Messengers, and had the oppor¬ tunity to preach several times at campmeetings. In Finnish. Sorensen, who at 44 was one of WWC’s youngest presidents, also had the privilege of awarding both of his children their diplomas — Melvin’s in 1980, and Laura’s in 1984. President Sorensen ' s years of experience in the field of educa¬ tion (see photo with rake) have been decorated with many highlights such as his 1979 meeting with President Carter (left), and his 1958 graduation from...you guessed it...WWC (top).
