people. Afterwards, we put our in- struments away, and then gathered around the piano and sang with them for a long time. It was really a moving experience. December 16, 1979. Eggs for break- fast. Boiled this time. We played in the Warsaw Conservatory ofMusic. I expected a huge hall with lots of people, but it was really small and there werenlt that many people. Not only that, but we came up after a long choral competition. We didnlt sound too bad, but we really blew Grand Chorus and Dialogue. The organ was really weird, and Ken Rudolf never had a Chance to practice. The Quintet sounded fanstastic. Went shopping afterwards, to get dad a hat, But the store that we wanted to go to was closed. December 17, 1979. Got up early be- cause we had to travel. We rode for about six hours, and I played Rook almost the whole time. We got to Wroclaw about 4:15 p.m. I really love the place, it,s not at all like Warsaw. Itls not as rushed, and a lot warmer, plus its more friendly. We played in Leopoldina Hall, which is a magnificent Baroque music hall. It used to be a jesuit church. It was really a great concert. December 18, 1979. Went sightsee- ing today. We went to St. John the Baptist Church, where we all sang. It really sounded great. There was a German nun there, and she started crying because we sang Silent Night. We bought some postcards from her, and then looked at some ofthe Chapels in the church. There was one with a skull in it. The guide said he liked our singing, especially my voice. I think he got me mixed up with Lorrie, since I cant sing. December 19, 1979. We have wor- ship together every morning. I really enjoy it. At 9 this morning we went to the Wroctow Filharmonia Koncert Hall and listened to an orchestra rehearsal directed by Andrezej Markowski. It was excellent; I could have listened to them all day. When we got up to leave, all the lights went out. People used cigarette lighters to get out ofthe place. I guess they turn offthe electric- ity one hour each day. After that, I went and bought some Polish records, and shopped ,til one in the afternoon. December 20, 1979. We traveled a lot today. We reached Auschwitzjust before sunset. It was pretty sad. We saw a film on the liberation of the camp by the Russians and the Polish Free Army. It showed some of the experiments done by the Nazis on the prisoners. It was grotesque. It really impressed me. It was late when we left. Ilve never seen the group so quiet and somber. My stomach hurts. We rode for another 45 minutes, to reach Cracow and the Holiday Inn. It was very Americanized. Nice double beds for everyone. A really nice shower, TV and radio. It was great. We went to a spaghetti place for sup- per. It was great. Got to bed at 10 p.m. and amazed myself for going to bed so early. December 21, 1979. Really feel rest- ed this morning. Had a great shower. Had a decent breakfast . . . egg soup again, but itjust tasted like a soft egg. Almost finished my peanut butter. We left for the conservatory late. Itls really snowing. December 22, 1979. Went to the Adventist Church and had a concert. Some of the kids from Warsaw were there and they wanted to talk to us, but we didn,t have time. So, they walked clear across Cracow to meet us and take us shop- ping. Then they waited for an hour outside in the cold while we ate sup- per. They really were hungry for con- tact with American young people. Lorrie and I got kidnapped after the concert. An old lady had Lorrie by the arm, and was hauling her up the stairs. I was coming down and she grabbed me. We must have gone up four flights of stairs before we reached her apart- ment. She set us down, and started stuffing us with the best cake. It was great, but we had to leave. Then they told us the group had left, so they decided to take us shopping. We went down to change our clothes, and the group was still there. Lorrie and I snuck off, so they got Ken Rudolf and took him shopping. MOUNTAINASH1980 - 23
