An almost married woman Most banquetgocrs caught on that they were on to a banquet that was slightly different when they looked at the front of their banquet programs. TTMr. and Mrs. ASWWC request the honour of your presence at the . . . so on and so forth. The fall banquet was called the TTASWWC Somethinggk Banquet? The Some- thing stood for something 01d, something new, something borrowed and something b1ue.And, for the unaccustomed, even after that, it became clear that such banquet themes as Chinese, Renaissance, Leaves ofAutumn and such noble decoration possibilities had been abandoned in favor ofa wedding theme. The highlight ofthe proceedings was the play. In place 0fthe usual film, Mrs. Rigby directed a lighthearted farce that went by the innocuous title of Father ofthc Bride? The plot can be quickly simplified to the hboy meets girl, they fall in love and get married genre, but between beginning and end, the frustra- tions, problems and occasional joys of marriage preparations were carefully detailed, and WWC gave SMC a severe run for their money in the matrimonial arena, at least from a banquet point of View. The bride-to-be was portrayed by Helen Whitehead, and the ulcer-plagued father by Don James. . . . MOUNTAINASH1980 -17

1980 Year of the Towaway Zone Old pictures of College Avenue are pretty. Idyllic, even. They portray a calm, tree shaded dirt lane, frequented mainly by horse traffic, and bothered only briefly by the new invention - the automobile. Welcome to the 1980,s. Goodby, dirt road, horses and idyllicism. Welcome cars, traffic itself, and a towaway ordinance. In September of1979, the City of College Place reinstated a 1969 ordinance which allowed the city to tow away cars improperly parked. Improperly parked was translated to between 12 and 6 a.m. Improperly parked meant being towed away, and that meant $50 or more. By January, some 60 people were found improperly parked, and together, they probably paid about $3,000 for their sins. It was really a mess. Students called for a removal of the ordinance. The college itself wasnlt too happy about it. A studentls mother got her car towed away while Visiting her daughter. A church got its bus towed away. And, the signs stayed up. The year of1980 will probably come and go, but for some of us, it will always be the year of the towaway zone. MOUNTAINASH1980 -19
