by Doug Logan In the spring we favored McGovern. He spoke to our idealism, our visions of the new politics. Through the summer we watched his positions slip from that idealism; we heard him contradict himself; we saw him shaking hands with Mayor Daley; we realized that he was just as capable and willing at playing the old politics as anyone else. Nixon was making sense. We felt that his trips to Moscow and Peking were more significant than the Democrats would admit. His economic policies were reasonable-a lot more than his opponent's. We opposed the war. But McGovern didn't seem to be the peace candidate he claimed to be earlier. As his stand decayed even more, his rhetoric became disgusting. We were glad when Nixon won. POLITICS by Terry Gottschall On November 7, 1972, the American electorate reelected incumbent Richard Nixon. In a campaign replete with political ups and downs-the Eagleton affair, the abortive peace moves, apathetic voters- Nixon's record in his first four years in office remained the major issue. With Nixon remaining-perhaps hiding- behind the scenes, his record was trumpeted by a multitude of surrogates. His trips to Peking and Moscow were especially pro- claimed as major steps in foreign policy, yet the only tangible result to come of the first was two Panda bears, and of the latter, a SALT treaty that was almost repudiated by the Senate. Nixon did indeed withdraw almost 500,000 troops from Viet Nam, but forces all around Viet Nam were heavily reinforced, and the bombing of North Viet Nam continued at an astronomical pace. To cap Nixon's record, the Watergate Caper topped a long list of scandals-including lTT, the milk price scandal, and the wheat sale to Russia-taking place in the first four years of the Nixon administration. Thus, running on his record, was Richard Milhous Nixon reelected.
