A Brief History of Kellogg Hall by Roberta McCorm ick Kellogg Hall was named after Phinias T. Kellogg who founded it in 1857 as a tourist attraction featuring the world's only performing string bean. After the novelty of a string bean doing imitations of Pocahontas and Buffalo Bill died' out, the building was purchased by a group of Arabs who renovated it, setting up a used camel lot. The camel business failed miserably, so after three years of flea scratching, they abandoned the idea-and the camels. During World War I the building was con- verted into a warehouse for storing Army surplus pretzels. It is rumored that some of these pretzels still exist somewhere in the basement of the building. During the next few years, the govern- ment occupied Kellogg Hall for a variety of purposes, including a training center for Army pack turtles and an assembly plant for mechanical orange pickers lthis fact isn't generally known or cared aboutl. After the government abandoned the build- ing, it enjoyed several years of obscurity until Walla Walla College took possession of it in 1958, with plans for a food service. In keeping with its grand and glorious past, Kellogg Hall offers the most unusual and con- stantly amazing menu to be found in the North- west. In addition to its many other fine foods, Kellogg Hall claims the distinction of being the only food service west of the Mississippi to offer a complete menu of foods made almost entirely of peanuts. Besides offering a wonderful variety of foods to excite the taste buds, and the imagina- tion, Kellogg Hall has led the industrial world by putting into use the world's only self-winding, semi-automatic banana pitting device. The future looks bright for Kellogg Hall, and the food service will no doubt contribute even more to its grand and glorious history. 25
