Man, these registration lines get worse every year. particularly on those who were talking to their professors. Why couldn't I talk to my professors before registration without impatient people glaring at me to hurry? With hands aching from writer's cramp and feet aching from shuffling, people stared blankly or grudgingly smiled at the camera. Finally, with registration over and precious money spent on textbooks that hinted tactually shoutedy of. themes, exams, labs, and many long hours of studying, I felt as if I belonged. During the next week, I trium- phantly attended the right classes in the right rooms at the right time, trying to lose the obvious distinc- tion of being a freshman. It worked until that ancient rite of Initiation Day came along and destroyed my cover. Hopefully, that was the last interruption in my goal to Umature. Otherwise, I'd be better off still waiting in that chilly autumn air for anything but school. 16

DORMITORIES by Gene Daffern In a day when fraternities and Greek letter asso- ciations are outmoded, Omicron Pi Sigma is no exception. OPS has had less each year to offer its members in return for involuntary membership and dues. The remaining symbols of rowdy power-the key, the shovel and Peon Day were abolished from the club at the beginning of the year. These changes, which most members approved, improved the spirit of the club. But not everyone agreed. And OPS was in the midst of another battle. The changes were par- ticularly difficult for some members who said, If we're not gonna have the key and shovel, why have the club? Why have the club is a good question; a ques- tion many are asking. A question the deans of men have been asking for several years. A ciub with 400 men is too large to involve everyone, says Mike Osborne, assistant dean of men. Osborne believes that OPS can no longer fulfill the objectives on which it was founded. OPS has always attempted to provide social activities, says Osborne. However, today it is impossible for OPS to compete with the quality of recreation and entertainment so readily available. The deans admire the direction in which recent OPS administrations have attempted to steer the club. For example, this year the club raised more than $200 to send to a school in Colombia, South America. in another special project, some of the members painted the Waitsburg Seventh-day Adventist Church. 17
