12 JA 7-HELLO by Tom Rowsell To an average WWC student, the telephone installed in his room is probably used most just because it's there! Yet to the few who remember the campus 8.0. Before Centrexi, the phones are worth every tax-inflated penny invested in the system. The pros are many: from the ease of asking a girl for a date, to the reciprocating convenience of saying twhile staring at a walli Uh, I've got other plans. . . to the elimination of messy coin- popping when calling home. The cons are really very few. Some wouId-be scholars find unhooking their phone the only solution to meaningless interruptions. Nonetheless, whether they're suffering acute dialitis or a chronic case of phonaphobia, every student uses his phone eventually. Take, for example, Sid Snodgrass in the following episode entitled Better never than late : Well, Sid, you've raved about that girl for two weeks now and I can't take it any longer. Get over to the phone and ask her! But, Bill . . . I don't know, maybe I ought to ask her to her face . . . No! Scratch that! I'm just not sure, Bill . . . besides, that phone. . . Whatdya mean, Sid? You're not telling me that when we have to pay ten dollars a quarter each for those plastic ear scoops you're not going to use it! All you have to do for an inside campus call is dial four digits, so quit putting it off and phone her. Wait, Bill, let me practice first by calling 'Dial-a-prayer' . . . No, I'll call their dorm and let the desk monitor connect me. . . , No, forget it, I just can't use that thing ....... Okay, Bill, okay. Don't iook at me that way! I'll call her! ONE RlNGY-DINGY . . . TWO RINGY-DINGY . . .THREE RINGY DINGY . . . FOUR RINGY DINGY . . . FIVE

INGY DINGY . . . SIX RINGY DINGY . . . SEVEN RINGY DINGY ...EIGHT RINGY DINGY . .. Wstw 9+click96 Uh, hi! This is Sid Snodgrass and l was wondering whether you'd like to go to the u p-co m ing banquet with me???..... Uh, sure,l see . . . okay, bye. Hey, man, how'd it go? Sounded like you didn't have to say very much!!! Yeah . . . especially after she said she'd been asked five minutes before while i was messing around trying to make my mind up whether to use the phone or not. . . if I hear one 'I told you so' out of you, Bill, I'll personally. . Enough of that epi- sode .. . but until an innova- tive administrator suggests video phones for Walla Walla, those light brown gadgets on your wall or desk are here to stay. 13
