The lonely, looming education building too new for students, with its mad great clock. The edifice of an enormous church, its steeple thin and stark in the sky. A metal-cast sundial splashed in sunlight. A silver-sleeved antenna. A four- layer library. Student faces swarming like bees, always chang- ing, almost apocryphal to their armloads 0f solemn books.

Prologue continued And maybe you wondered then: chhy am I here? Am I really wooing the ageless substance of tvisdom?,, Whatever the answer, Walla Walla College became a little closer to you. You exchanged a bit of each other through the sometimes-torturous-process-of- learning. You were happy. Maybe thus you found your quest was not a new one, nor your journey unmapped. Others had gone before you and believed in the same things you do now, and still the things were good and still alive. And in different stumbling ways, dark men and golden men with tongues as wild as birds had done what you do and thought what you think and walked like you walk. And whisper, gtWhen you touch our dreams and our blood on your white pure books, touch it gently: promise us, prom- ise. . .93 So you found that to traverse the terrifying abyss of yourself you required a helper-someone you could depend on, to sympa- thize when you felt blue and laugh when you were happy. That some- one was Walla Walla College. It9s not just buildings, you know. It9s people, it9s home-and that means you. . .
