He deals with human lives and the stakes are eternal. He cannot meet the needs of his people effectively, but he can introduce them to One who has met his personal questionings with positive and powerful answers. The strength of this friendship is the measure of his personal effectiveness. He must keep free from gathered clouds of theological fog, must remember that he is not an angel but a man speaking to men, must be schooled in the science of the shepherd.
