ADMINISTRATION The criteria by which the growth and success of a school are measured depends upon who is doing the measuring and why. The tax office wants the value of the physical plant. The department of education looks at the number of teachers and their educational pedigree, plus the number of students and courses offered. The church counts the denominational workers the school graduates. The parent gasps at the monthly statement and quarterly grade report. In addition to the more conventional indica- tors, the president may look at the myriad of de- tails that multiplies in his office and decide that here is a thermometer to measure the growth and health of the school. Working through routine committees, planning the budget, recruiting staff members, and carrying out the objectives of the board automatically involve a certain tempo of activity. Details like remembering birthdays, giving token gifts of appreciation, and commending special efforts are lubricants of human relations which keep the school functioning smoothly. PERCY W. CHRISTIAN, Ph. D., President RUTH Hi LAWRENCE, B. 5., Secretary to the President
