However, there walked with them on their humble path the divine Spirit of Service. To that Spirit must be credited the expansion of this college from 1892’s meager enrollment to the twelve hundred students of 1948. By that Spirit have been implanted and maintained principles and personnel which fifty-six years have materialized into ‘the school that educates for life.” In that Spirit more than twenty-five hundred graduates have answered calls to work for God in every branch of human endeavor, going with three-fold preparation to every section of the globe. Though the road to service has led and still leads through trials and dis- couragements, consecrated progress has broadened its goals and swung _ its Gateway ever wider to youth ambitious for God. In confidence that its influences will still guide Walla Walla College, this 1948 MountTaIN AsH is dedicated with reverence and humility to The Spirit of Service. He who plows looks ahead. The builder sees the finished build- ing even though the foundation only is made. The student looks ahead to the close of school and the finishing of his course. Youth looks to the road ahead. He who would achieve must concentrate all his powers of mind and body on his life prob- lem. To him the toil and drudgery of today are but parts of the road he must travel. The goal and not the roadway is important. Success may come in the realm of the physi- cal or in the realm of the spiritual. The finer and more lasting experiences of life are spiritual. He who would be successful must learn to give—to give himself and all he has. He must pay the price. He must never expect more than he gives, for success is never found on the bargain counter. The road is Christian education which is bordered by the beautiful flowers of Christian service. The road does not end at the “Gateway of Service” but reaches to the portals of the Holy City. G. W. Bowers, President. THE COLLEGE BOARD, representing the institutions and conferences of the Northwest, is the influence behind the scenes which makes possible ever-advancing plans for “The School that educates for life.” HENRY L. But maybe she should have asked an expert whether that word under the spot in her cook book was a teaspoon or a teacup full of baking powder. Lucky, wasn’t it, that not-so-bright Brenda wasn’t on the staff that got out this annual, for a book like this is easier to spoil than a batch of biscuits? But your staff didn’t pull any Brenda boners. They knew where to dig to get the latest low- down on the lads and lovelies — with pix of who’s who and where it happened. And they WWER GUINEA. «S TR EET ENGRAVING AN also knew that the book had to be easy to read and the pictures clear, so you wouldn't have to say, “That’s me — the one without the tail.” ; Instead of guessing, they went to those who knew the angles and the answers. They got the best printer, and chose us to make the engravings. For 40 years we have specialized in school annuals and know just how to work with editors, artists, photographers, faculty, and the printer to get the best results. We believe you'll agree that this book’s a beauty, and are glad that Brenda was the little girl who wasn’t there. p COLORTYPE Co Walla Willa College Rester AABY, CLOVIS, 202 So.
