PRESlDENT'S MESSAGE The task of Christian education today is the same as it has been--to eauip young men and women to meet the problems of life. The task is of greater complexity now than formerly because life is more complex and intense. Christian education can perform this task more completely than secular education, The latter of necessity must refrain from exploration in the realm of the spiritual. Man is not a being consisting of individual units of body or mind. l-le is a highly integrated individual. The spiritual aspects of life are so closely enmeshed with the physical and mental that the education which leaves out the spiritual is at a disadvantage, and even in the realm of the intellectual purely secular education is also ata disadvantage, Investigations have been conducted which carry man into the extreme fringes of the borderland between the known and the unknown. Here facts give place to theories and speculations, but the sincere purpose to arrive at the truth leads one to the Creator as the source of all truth. Here finite touches the infinite in communion. Christian education, by creating opportunity for more complete under- standings of all phases of man's nature, provides the equipment for meeting life in all of its aspects, Walla Walla College is the school that educates for lifel -George W. Bowers. Frank W. Peterson, Business Manager Foresight characterizes a good business manager, and Mr. Peter- son is one who looks to the future. DR, C1 W, BOWERS CLASS OF 1939 MOTTO : Working While Waiting tar Christ AIM: Others COLOR: Wine and White FLOWER: American Beauty Rose 1451- A Senior Skate Four years ago two hundred five freshmen registered at Walla XNalla College. Today the class has dwindled to forty-eight applicants for degrees. Many of this original number took professlonal courses and are already out in the field of service making use of their college training, Many others have fallen by the 'way-side, so that only seven of the class who started four years ago are now graduating, The Senior Class organized Februarv l2, choosing President Bowers as their Adviser The class has enjoyed together its own prayer band and devotional service each Tuesday morning, with Don Neufeld as Chaplain, A committee headed by Lester Cooper has provided for the social occasions of the class. Trailing the Killer, a sixfreel talking picture featuring wild animal life, was presented bv the Seniors in Columbia Hall, Thanks to Erwin Fowler, chairman of the program committee, the picture was a success in every way, On April l6 the Juniors entertained the class at a picnic at the Boy Scout Camp in the Blue Mountains The Seniors were delighted at the originality and cleverness the Juniors displayed, but were glad to illustrate to their successors their superior ball playing ability, Aside from red and peeling noses, only pleasant memories have remained from the event. The Class of V939 has many fond recollections of the years spent at Walla Walla College. As they depart to find their places in the Lord's work it is their determination to remain true to the high principles of their Alma Mater, eMAl2GARET CRAIG. -1471- 481 Henry Charles Alexander, B.A. Mussoorie, India Mayor: Secondary Education, Minorsg Bible and l-lis tory, Graduate ot Vincent Hill Junior College, India '30, Executive work at Vincent Hill School '30-'39 Dorothy Cushman-Booth, B.A. College Place, Washington Mayor English, Minors French and Bible, Sec Lit' erary Club '35, S S Suot. A 'thankless' job? l queried. And the next fifteen minutes l spent in deliberating vvith him on what l believe to be conclusive evidence that the editors of The Voice of Walla Walla College consider the satisfaction that comes from feeling their jab vvell executed vvith the result ofa competent school paper, full reward for their labor. The Collegian staff of V938-39, pledging itself to its 2000 subscribers, has reached some of the high ideals set for it by the College. lt has come far from attaining the perfection desired by either its readers or its editors. But We have endeavored to present vitally information, entertainment, and inspiration to the students and alumni of Walla Walla College. You can criticize, condemn, and berate the Collegian, but student life here wouldn't seem quite right without the regular visits of this weekly publication, A hearty vote of thanks should be extended to the entire staff who have done their work faithfully, and especially to Dr. Merlin L, Neff, Literary Adviser, whose suggestions and help have been greatly appreciated. Johnson, has a prominent place in the activities of the school, ln addition to the independent concerts given during the year, the orchestra and band under the direction of Professor Johnson, give a half hour of music before many of the Saturday evening entertainments, The A Cappella choir, directed by Mr. Schyde, is an essential part of the Friday evening vesper service, The vvorship periods in the school homes, the chapel exercises, Sabbath school, church, and Missionary Volunteer meetings all call on the talents of those enrolled in the Music Department. A two manual pipe organ in the College Place Church adds a Worshipful atmosphere to the services held in the church, The students in organ, under thc instruction of Mr. Walker, play for the Missionary Volunteer service, The church choir, which is composed of both village people and students, is directed by Professor Gernet, who is also the theory and music composition teacher of the Music Department, Each spring the College sponsors tours by the orchestra, the band, and the A Cappella choir, These organizations present musically worthwhile programs at the academies and in the churches of the Northwest, These tours have been successful in interesting many in the Work of the College, Last fall the Cratorio Society, under the direction of Mr, Schyde, presented the oratorio, The Messiah, by l-landel, as a Christmas program just before the holidays. A Music Club is sponsored by the faculty and students of the department, The purpose of the club is to study worthwhile phases of music history and perform- ance, as well as to instill in each an appreciation for the highest type of music. lt is the purpose of the Music Department to educate our young people to a better understanding and appreciation of good music. Courses in music appreciation are offered, and chapel programs are prepared which bring many of the classical gems before the students. .':981- COLLEGE BAND Director: Victor Johnson 67' JQQRK Jx NiwwQ1Lm rg, L LJgwi.iYgVCJNi', 'xi Hurri--, R NYJSQM! Dean Simpson must have hidden his bed too carefully, or else someone else did, at any rate he sat around the bonfire all night with a number of others, Were they sleepy the next morning? Ask them. October l5-Dormitory Mixer ln response to the calls of the trumpeters, a group of gayly clad gypsys gathered on the lawn behind Conard l-lall to follow their vagabond leaders down the Romany Trail, After a one-up hike through village and field, camp was set up in a large meadow where the carefree gypsies played about the bonfires.
