Graduate work, University of Washington. English Department AN ESSENTIAL phase of a liberal arts training is that provided by the English Department. From the technique and principles of composition of the freshman year to the seminar classes of the senior year, the English student has repeated opportunities to become acquainted with interesting characters and epochs of the past out of which grow ourpresent customs, institutions, and ideals. The study of literature contributes to an appreciation of the lives and modes of other ages, and, as a result, an intelligent comparison with our own. The department endeavors to send out men and women with a thorough knowledge of rhetorical technique, a sound literary philosophy, and a talent for interpreting ancient and contemporary literature. Instructors of the English Department believe it their privilege to educate the student to live a life more than to make a living for life: they believe the goods of the mind outweigh the goods of the body. This year the English Department has been especially well represented on the library shelves in reference and source works. A greatly enriched curricula has necessitated the increased number of books and helps. . 1171- i If ff, Clara E. THE first quarter of the year 1934-1935 saw a substantial enlargement of the Journalism division, now one of the outstanding minors in the College. Under the direction of Professor Merlin Neff, this department has made rapid strides. Two years of training are offered. The essentials are stressed in the initial year in order to prepare the student for his second year's work, in which social benefit and edification rather than selish and mercenary motives are advocated. Housed in the Science Hall with four spacious laboratories and class and stock room space designed to accommodate hundreds of students, the chemistry department, headed by Professor Bowers, is well equipped to turn out proficient college majors in that field and to meet the requirements of the pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-nursing, and pre-dietetic courses. The physics department under Dr. Kretschmar now occupies much of the first floor space of the Administration building. Large well-equipped laboratories and shops lend encouragement to mastering the principles of mechanics, astronomy, radio, elec- tricity, and other branches of science. The power house which provides heat and light for the college is supervised by this department. 1191- ,V XL ,, Fred Hansen Lilah Godfrey 1 f uptm of Pre Nzlrsing Imtrucior of Matlaemazfics ns 1' ' - Mason Memorial Hospital, Kentucky, R.N. We have tried to select the most signifi- cant factors in our College life for 1935 in such a way as to make this book Worth While like its prede- cessors, and yet new. It has been a tradition to use the NIOUNTAIN ASH to picture to those aspiring to attend, the three-fold education of Walla Walla College. We have endeav- ored to give some idea of the beauty of the campus and,'in fact, of the whole union, as well as to give an idea of the activities to be engaged in here. This year's staff has endeavored not only to maintain the traditional reputation of the paper, but also to make progress in journalistic excellency and service. The Collegian has long been known as the uvoice of Walla Walla College. To give this designation true meaning, the staff has attempted to make the paper reflect student sentiment as well as admin- istrative ideal. Consequently, the editorial policy has reached a new freedom this year, and news has been portrayed according to its comparative value. Perhaps one of the most 'satisfying episodes, of the year was the occupation of the new office quarters. Now the Collegian occupies quarters that are adequate for the efficient business of publication. To publish every week a paper the size of the Collegian is a real accomplishment for a students' association. KENNETH WIIJSON, Editor. -msg. A very progressive step Was taken this year by the orchestra when it combined with the Walla W' alla Symphony to present a Lyceum number in the Davis Auditorium. Professor ohnson is also director of the Walla Walla Symphony, which further promotes a spirit of cooperation and mutual benefit. The Cantatas George Washingtonv and The Prodigal Son given by the oratorio society were both accompanied by the orchestra. The music used this year covers a broad scope and the orchestra is able to present very creditably difficult numbers by famous composers. Thirty instruments round out a Well balanced orchestral group. A Junior orchestra was started by Professor Johnson and under the direction of Frances Boorman made fine progress. The String Quartet, composed of Professor Johnson, Lewie Kern, Charles Gallion, and William McGhee, all -members of the orchestra, together with Frances Boorman, accompanist, and Margaret Mackay, Scotch soloist, have made many appearances in cities of the Northwest on booster trips for the College. 42981- I 1 c -7.
